Eyes Wide Shut

I could NOT fall asleep last night! I was uncomfortable and tossing and turning. And every 3 minutes either Matt rolled over or I moved, waking the other one up. I think he was asleep and just moving in his sleep, but my brain was awake. I BLAME THAT 4PM COFFEE!!! I should have gotten decaf but I wanted the flavored kind. Never again!

Eventually I got out of bed (at 10:45) and came down to try some hot milk. I thought about doing yoga, meditating, reading, but instead I had about a half a cup with a Weetabix biscuit melted in and a tsp of PB. Then I had one of my aunt’s cookies! That seemed to work because I got back in bed at 11, reset my alarm to nix the AM workout, and fell asleep.

I got up at 6:30 and was able to do 45 minutes of Power Vinyasa Flow #2 before breakfast. It was a GREAT yoga session. PV #2 is my very favorite session. It’s got lots of Sun B flows and really warms you up from the inside out.

Then I had a wonderful breakfast that I’ve been planning for a day now: Pumpkin Yogurt Crunch.

  • Tsp cinnamon (superfood!!)
  • 1/2 large banana (fruit + fiber)

  • 1 tbsp pumpkin butter (superfood!?)
  • 1 tbsp flax (omega-3’s + fat + fiber)
  • Toasted almonds (healthy fat)

LOVE the oats!

Sorry about the sleep issues. Were you hungry when you woke up? Sometimes if my blood sugar is off it wakes me up, but once I eat I can get back to sleep!

I’ve been having similar sleep issues and I can usually tie it back to a cup of coffee I had to sneak in sometime during the afternoon. Even if it’s as early as 1pm I just can’t do it! I hate being so sensitive but I know exactly what you’re going through!

I can’t have coffee after 2pm or I don’t sleep well that night at all! Crazy how caffeine can have such a strong effect on your body after so long.
I think I heard that coffee has an 8 hour half life, meaning after 8 hours only half the amount of caffeine you have consumed has worn off.

Kath-

I just got a a new Polar F11 heart rate monitor. I wore it for the first time yesterday when I went for a run and found it kept telling me I was above my target heart rate. Do you try and stay within your target heart rate when working out even if it reduces your intensity? I REALLY want to burn fat not muscles so I’m not sure what I should be doing.

Thanks!

Can anyone help me with something?!?! Okay, so here is the deal. I am looking to lose just a few pounds. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best software or online resource to track everything? I looked at Calorie King but they charge now. Boo! I don’t mind paying but I want to make sure it’s worth it. Any insight would be great!

I know its a bit late, but congrats on going to Africa, my husband and I plan on going there after i finish my masters next year. I look forward to learning more about your experience there. Also, double yum on pimento cheese. Do you have a Fresh Market near you? They make a great reduced-fat version. Take care and enjoy the day!

Interesting about the snack helping you to sleep. I often find that when I can’t sleep, I’m dehydrated and a big glass of water does the trick.

That looks like a super filling breakfast. I love Greek yogurt, but I always get full long before I can eat a full cup of it…it’s insane how filling that stuff it.

Woah, i had the (almost) identical breakfast yesterday! So delicious and so much to savour!

The differences were that i used 3/4 cup (no salt added) 1% cottage cheese + a splash of skim milk instead of greek yogurt. And instead of 3/4 cup go lean, i mixed 1/3 cup go lean, 1/3 cup H2H and 1/3 cup cinnamon puffins. I also added a tiny bit (1/4, 1/8 tsp?) of almond extract, which i tend to do with oats/yogurts when i know i’ll have some Barney butter on top.

I’m so lost when it comes to what butter/margarine to buy. I just bought some of the “real stuff” this week, but it’s got 7 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. But I hate buying chemically added margarines, even if some of the trans-fat-free-ones.

Tips? Suggestions? What do you all use?

Reply

45 Marianne March 4, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Pumpkin/yogurt/cereal mixes are the best. You can get a whole lot of stuff in that bowl and it’s super filling :) I haven’t had one in awhile (no pumpkin, and now I can’t have the crunchy cereal). Jealous!

Meg ,
I wasn’t really hungry, but the food definitely helped. Or maybe it was the hot milk!

coco ,
I edited a few of them :)

Fancy ,
Yikes! What keen eyes you have. If #48 emails me I’ll send them one too.

Danielle ,
Wouldn’t surprise me! When I give up coffee I definitely sleep more soundly.

Kelly L.,
Don’t worry about a fat burning zone. What’s more important is that you are burning the most calories you can in a time period. Consider this:

You exercise for 30 minutes at your fat burning zone and burn 300 calories, 50% of which is fat.

You exercise for 30 minutes at a higher intensity and burn 500 calories at 40% fat.

Even though the percent is lower it the second case, it’s calories burned that matter’s most. Because oxygen consumption and heart rate are correlated with calorie burn, you want to have a higher HR.

Kathleen ,
Try FitDay or The Daily Plate.

Kate T,
The second was my new blogging gig at BalancedLiving.Gather.com.

Sarah ,
I use real butter – just a dab. Or you could try whipped butter for more air and less fat per volume.
