Still, looks like fun. ;)

haha that’s awesome…love the faces! i wouldn’t think twice about a hot tub after a good run…it just helps keep the muscles warm to stretch afterwards, right? ;)

Kath,

As a lurker until now, I’ve been impressed with the way you care for your body through healthy eating–but you could apply a little more of that care to your body after running. In all seriousness, the hot tub is *not* good for your body after running. Heat encourages inflammation, ice minimizes swelling. Is an afternoon in the hot tub worth increasing your injury risk and jeopardizing your training?

33 Kath March 14, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Well not if I didn’t know that! This is my first time doing longer distances. I had never heard to stay out of hot water. Perhaps you could enlighten me with some more information on this?

Here are 2 articles on ice baths. The “Running Doc” blog on Runners World had a question a few months ago specifically about hot water, but old entries seem to have been taken down once the blog ended…

It seems to me both hot and cold have advantages?

” The cold water decreases muscle temperature and causes the blood vessels to narrow. This reduces pain, the amount of swelling and helps remove waste products from the muscles. In contrast, the hot water increases muscle temperature dilates the blood vessels which increases blood flow and oxygen supply.”

So hot tub followed by icing my foot might be considered hot + cold therapy?

Congratulations Kath! What an awesome picture. Make sure you drink enormous amounts though if you’re going to be in a hot tub after sweating through 11 miles! SIAB looks like an perfect fix.
