I’m eating and blogging – we gotta get on the road and are running behind!!

Lunch today was Tuna Salad made with half a can of tuna, 1 tbsp plain yogurt, 1 tsp dijon mustard, diced carrot, bell pepper, jalapeno, dill pickles and celery, capers and red curry powder. The best combo!


Plus a Banana Creme yogurt




And veggies to munch and a donut peach! But I’m feeling full already so I might take these to go.


Bad Blogging News?

So I found out from my sister, who rented the condo, that we don’t have wireless internet. I know there is internet on the island and I think I can go to the golf club to get it, but I won’t be blogging after each meal since I’ll have to travel there to do it – most likely each morning or afternoon to recap the day before. But with any luck I’ll be able to pick up a wireless signal from a nearby condo – cross your fingers! Sorry guys 😥

Aw darn, I’ve been wanting to have tuna for lunch for a couple days now but I completely forgot about it, JUST ate lunch, then looked here and saw your tuna, which reminded me that I am too late! Sigh. Maybe dinner instead!

No worries about the less frequent updates, have an awesome time on the island!

Haha, donut peaches are so cute – yes, I think produce is cute, oh well ;0)

No worries about potential lack of internet access while you’re away – enjoy the time off with your husband!! :0)

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve tried the sardines in can for the first time today after seeing your post and THEY ARE FANTASTIC:)!! I tried the one in mustard sauce and I really relaly liked them.

I hope you have a great time on your vacation! Oh, by the way, I thought your morning table with the wedding picture looked lovely:) Your wedding pictures look really great, too!

Enjoy your weekend Kath! And Happy Anniversary!

I have a question for everyone on here. I am having a tonsillectomy on Wednesday and I am desperate for ideas of what I will be able to eat post-op. I’ve been told that it’s a pretty painful recovery and that the most important thing to do is to try not to get dehydrated. I’m just worried because I have really good eating and nutrition habits and I want to try and nourish my body to help it recover. I know I can eat ice pops and junk but I want to try and get some vitamins too. So I’m thinking…smoothies? Broth? Soy milkshakes (I’m vegan)?

Has anyone else gone through this surgery who can offer advice? Or does anyone else (surgery or not) have any ideas they could share? Like stuff I could puree? LoL sorry for a weird question but this is such a great forum and any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Ashliqua-I had my tonsils out when I was 17. The first day it took me ALL DAY to drink one 8 oz. glass of water. It is PAINFUL. Whatever you do DON’T eat chocolate anything! About 3 weeks post op I had chocolate pudding and it burned the entire way down-it was horrible.

Sorry if I scared you but it is not an easy recovery :-/

Wow. How heartbreaking that you can’t obsessively track every bite.

Seriously – used to enjoy your blog – but it’s a recovering bulimic’s nightmare. Being as careful about tracking food as you are is scary and definately disordered (disordered eating, not to be confused with eating disorder).

Life is way, way too short to be so anal about food, Kath! Having some fun blogging about food is one thing … making it one of the central parts of your life is quite another – especially when it comes to vacations, a time when you’re supposed to be getting AWAY from all that jazz!

I know I won’t be reading anymore. Good luck!

I don’t feel like Kath has to record everything she eats on this blog for her own purposes only. She obviously keeps track of them herself but posts them promptly on the site because there is a demand for it and she knows it helps people. I don’t find that obsessive – I find it very generous. I don’t comment very much, but I had to just express my gratitude towards Kath for all the work she does put in to maintaining the website and answering our questions.

Ashliqua, I had my tonsils out last summer, and it is really painful, they told me to drink gatorade, but I could barely swallow the first 3 days, smoothies were okay by day 3-4, it took a good two weeks to swallow right and be able to eat good again…just don’t miss your pain medication and get lots of rests, and you can get through it, you honestly won’t feel like eating the first two days, but do drink liquids, as much as you can! Hope it goes okay!!

ashliqua- i had my tonsils out at 19 and i slept a lotttt afterwards and ate popsicles like crazy. i think one day all i ate were popsicles and had about 8 throughout the day. don’t worry too much about your healthy habits for the first couple of days.. rest a lot, eat whatever will go down easy, and resume your normal habits when you heal! that is probably the healthiest thing you could do!!! after the first day or two i also made smoothies with strawberries, bananas, ice and water and they went down nice and easy. good luck!

I don’t like the negativity of certain comments. I think that it’s very generous on her part to take time out of her busy life to post everything she eats for other people to see. She obviously cares about her readers because she actually takes the time out of her vacations to post about what she’s eating and what she’s doing.

I am actually inspired by what she eats and it helps me on my weight loss journey. Great work Kath!

lol, why is that disordered? because she posted a frown? I’m sure Kath isn’t ACTUALLY upset, Jane. She just knows people check her blog a lot and so she’s mentioning why she won’t be posting.
what I love about the negative comments is they ALL say the same thing. No one should respond anymore. Just say “that’s been covered.” :)

I enjoy reading Kath’s food blogs.I would advise perhaps she rethinks abut blogging such personal info about her life,but of course that’s her choice.
I do think blogs have gotten a bit out of control if we all can’t leave them while on holiday or out of town.I mean that for all bloggers and it is not meant in any mean spirit.Kath seems like a lovely person, but it is scary how computers are becoming “big brother” like in some ways…
Yet here I am reading a few blogs…so who am I to judge?!
Just a warning to all to treasure your privacy and some days all to yourself.

Why do people always attack Kath while she’s on vacation?

I had my tonsils out last year and it was the roughest 2 weeks of my life. Everyone said to eat Popsicles but anything even slightly sweet hurt so bad i wanted to cry. The only thing i could get down was broth for almost 8 days. I lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks, i was pretty thin before that so it was sick, i looked like a skeleton! Sleep as much as possible!

I didn’t get my tonsils out, but I did get my wisdom teeth out which was quite uncomfortable. I was in that small percentage of people who got dry socket.. icky!! Anyways, be careful with oatmeal because I thought it would be a great food to eat with pains in the mouth area.. Boy was I wrong! Those lovely little grains tend to get caught in the open and hurting areas. I think sticking to popsicles is your best bet and you can make your own healthy popsicles by freezing juice in ice cube forms (I would stay away from the more acidic juices though)!!

Hello all! I don’t post here to often but I read the blog daily…. Anyways, I just started my own blog, more for personal reason of keeping myself on track than anything but i’d love to share it with other’s if you are interested… But plugging my blog isn’t really why i am posting lol… I’m actually having some issues with uploading pics to wordpress-it says it’s waiting for permission to upload but i waited 20 mins and it never went thru- I know all you food bloggers do not spend that much time everyday waiting for your pics to post because who has that amount of time? lol… Any tips or suggestions?

I may just cut and paste and repost this on a new post when Kath gets back because I am not sure if many people will even see it here…

@Jessica – wordpress deals w/problems during the week-end, try early in the morning or late in the night on Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the week it works just fine, can’t complain.

hi kath – i remember that you’ve been looking for good scones. i don’t know if you have trader joe’s in your area, but i found a bag of 3 cranberry scones at my local store today. they are 250 calories each — but huge — i couldn’t even finish half as a treat — and have a good scone texture. i don’t know if this fits the bill for you, but thought i’d pass it on…

when you get back i made this recepie up, and the scones turned out AMAZING, just how you like them perfectly dry and crumbly. :)

2 cups whole wheat pancake flour (i use ant jemimas whole wheat pancake flour) (about 9 ounces)
3 tablespoons pure cane sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons chilled REGULAR butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup skim milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg white
2 teaspoons skim milk
2 teaspoons pure cane sugar
cinnimon (use as you please :) )

Preheat oven to 425°.
Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; stir with a whisk. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or whisk until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Combine 1/2 cup milk, vanilla, and egg white in a bowl. Add milk mixture to flour mixture, stirring just until moist (dough will be soft).
Pat dough into an 8-inch circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cut dough into 12 wedges, cutting into, but not through, dough. Brush 2 teaspoons milk over surface of dough; sprinkle with 2 teaspoons turbinado sugar. Bake at 425° for 17 minutes or until golden. Serve warm, or cool on a wire rack.

Scott, I tried tuna salad with yogurt after reading about it here. I don’t like mayo to begin with, but I have to say the yogurt was great in it.
