Drunk On Coffee

April 30, 2009

It has been a long morning already and I’ve gotten no studying done!! But I did get in a great workout. When I got up this morning, I knew I needed to work out first thing to be as efficient as possible. But I didn’t wanna! My stomach was a little hungry and I didn’t have much energy. I told myself to just put on my workout clothes and go down and have some water and if I wanted to I could have breakfast first and go later.

So once I was downstairs, dressed with a big glass of water, I decided it made the most sense for my schedule today to get going and I was out the door. What really did it was visualizing myself at the gym, rushing home to make a noon conference call and then a 2pm appointment and decided I did not want to be rushed then.

I biked there and back (2.2 miles each way) and did 26 minutes on the Stairmaster and 10 of upper body lifting, lunges and abs

I biked through the golfers at the Quail Hollow Championship again. I think Tiger Woods was teeing off on my way back! All the cologne, aftershave and perfume smells that I passed were just AMAZING! Enough inspiration to make me use Matt’s “for him” shampoo and soap today 😉

When I came down for breakfast, I knew I was going to have a cup of coffee from my new OhNuts.com package. This was the Cappuccino Fudge – oh my!!!

It was so rich and chocolatey. I wish you could smell the screen!

IMG_5333 (1024x768)

I haven’t had 100% caf coffee in a while since I’ve been mixing Spring Blend with half decaf. This cup left me a little drunk on caffeine! I’ll have to cut it with some decaf next time, but if you like caf, this cup’s for you.

IMG_5337 (1024x768)

My other breakfast addition: dried raspberries! These guys are pricy, but I bet OhNuts’ price beats most other stores. I got hooked on them in Trader Joe’s Nuts for Raspberries trail mix.

IMG_5335 (1024x768)

So I knew I needed a quick breakfast because I am yet again running late (and this post isn’t helping!!) I didn’t really know what I wanted but my mind kept drifting to the granola with soy milk I had the other night. So I decided that’s what I should have!

IMG_5338 (1024x768)

A year ago I would have NEVER had a tiny bowl of high calorie cereal like this, but since that’s what I wanted today, and since I’m at home and don’t have to “risk” being caught somewhere starving, I decided to have it.

IMG_5340 (1024x768)

I did measure out a serving of the granola, because we all know how easy it is to go wild with it.

The mix:

  • 1/2 cup Mix My Granola (1 serving by weight)
  • 1/4 cup Uncle Sam’s (for some more fiber/protein)
  • ~7 blackberries
  • 1 tbsp dried raspberries
  • 1 tsp walnut butter (which I really enjoyed in the milk!!)
  • ~3/4 cup vanilla soy milk

IMG_5339 (1024x768)

It was delish! And when combined with my big mug of coffee, I was quite full afterwards. I’ll see how many hours it gets me. I’m guessing this was still a pretty high calorie bowl for the volume and I wouldn’t eat this every morning I don’t think, but enjoyment was top priority today.

GMAIL ROCKS!!!!! More emoticons!!!!

And my friend Vanessa from my Kenya trip just did a blog video on green tips around her house. I found it to be very entertaining and informative :)

I’m late, I’m late!! Biochem is calling!

Hello fellow KERF readers!
I’m working on a school project and would really appreciate it if you could take my survey, related to exercise and nutrition:

It is about time you posted breakfast Kath :) Just joking. Looks great! Have fun with Biochem.

3 Weekly Bite April 30, 2009 at 9:13 am

Looks like you got your morning off to a great start!

Have a great day :)

I eat granola as cereal all the time, and you’re right…it is quite sad and how little you can eat for the calories. but it’s just so good that i keep doing it. It works out better if I measure it out and bring it to work, because if i do it at home, I know I”ll go back for more! yum :)

When I work out in the morning (which is usually every day during the work week!), I have just a 1/4 to 1/3 of ezekial bread and some peanut butter. I know you don’t really need a snack unless you work out for over an hour, but I feel like I need it first thing in the am to break the over night fast. I’m curious why you didn’t have something tiny if you were hungry. Is it because you were afraid it would get jostled in your stomach during your workout?

Also, so true about granola!! I used to eat it by the cupfuls when I was clueless!! Eeeek! Now I eat a little bit (1 or 2 tablespoons) every day as a topping for yogurt or oats!

melissa ,
I guess I didn’t clarify that once I had a glass of water I was fine and not hungry anymore. Per usual, “hunger” was thirst (and procrastination).

7 Oh She Glows April 30, 2009 at 9:35 am

Kath thank you for showing that it is ok to eat a high calorie breakfast. A long while back when I first started reading your blog, I was afraid to have lots of calories in the morning, but you have shown me that it is OK and it gives lots of energy for a busy day. You are right, no one likes to be ‘caught’ straving and without energy or a snack!

Those coffee beans look so good!

And that bowl of cereal would definitely be something I could enjoy!

have a great day!

9 Susan April 30, 2009 at 9:43 am

The coffee sounds delicious! I wish we could smell it.

Good luck with biochem! I took it in college as well, and I really enjoyed it when I had a professor who was enthusiastic about it and made it easy to understand. He asked thought provoking questions that made us think about the material rather than just repeat it. It was fun! Or I’m just a nerd.

10 Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats April 30, 2009 at 9:46 am

Oh! Those dried raspberries look so sweet and delicious – I’ve never tried those before! Have a great day!

I so wish I could have smelled that coffee through the computer screen…it looked wonderful. I don’t like the taste of coffee, but I sure do love the smell.

I love all the crazy emoticans in this post!

I really try the visualizing thing, and it just doesn’t work for me. I really think it’s because I’ve never been a morning person – and I’m still just trying to get up before 7 a.m. I think it could work if I was a little more consistent with early rising.

13 Beadie April 30, 2009 at 9:48 am

mmm…..that coffee sounds delicious!!!

14 skinnyrunner April 30, 2009 at 9:53 am

i love coffee. just looking at it makes me want to drink more.
great attitude on the cereal! how healthy and balanced and… normal! sometimes its so hard to feed our bodies what they want and not what our heads are telling us not to eat.
have a great day!

15 Moran (The Running Addict) April 30, 2009 at 9:55 am

HAHA I wish I could have smelled it!

16 Angie April 30, 2009 at 9:55 am

Beautiful breakfast, love the huge blackberries!

And, I totally agree that it is actually a good thing to have a relatively high calorie breakfast. In fact, what I see that most people who are trying to lose weight do, is to eat too little all throughout the morning and early afternoon and that really sets up the perfect situation for nighttime binging.

17 brandi April 30, 2009 at 10:03 am

good luck with the studying!

I LOVE dried raspberries. I may need to get some from them. I got hooked on them in that same trail mix – they’re SO good!

18 Marisa (trim the fat) April 30, 2009 at 10:14 am

Lol at “drunk on coffee”! I have had that feeling before and never quite knew how to describe it – now I do! I can’t take much caffeine, either :)

Love granola!

19 Brittney April 30, 2009 at 10:14 am

Mmm…..your breakfast looks yummy :)

20 lora April 30, 2009 at 10:19 am

your just like me in the sense of breakfast choices! i need high calories in the morning bc i always need the energy and it is my favorite meal of the day so why not indulge? i tend to eat over 500 calories in the morning and since i run later in the morning i always have energy because im still satisfied. granola is fantastic but it never holds me over…id need like half the bag haha

21 Kara April 30, 2009 at 10:20 am

I think dried raspberries might be my favorite dried fruit! Yummy!

22 Kate April 30, 2009 at 10:23 am

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now and really enjoy it. I have one question (and it will seem really random) but after your meals, do you feel really full (as in your stomach sticks out some but eventually returns to normal after digestion)? I ask this b/c your meals are so healthy with a good amount of volume.

23 Mara @ What's For Dinner? April 30, 2009 at 10:23 am

I’ve shied away from chocolate flavored coffees, but after you suggested the FM Spring Blend, I’m trusting your coffee taste!

24 K April 30, 2009 at 10:31 am

That coffee sounds right up my alley! Glad you had a good work out and good luck studying!!

25 Run Sarah April 30, 2009 at 10:39 am

Those coffee beans look fresh and perfect…I need to start brewing my AM cup!

26 Meredith (Pursuing Balance) April 30, 2009 at 10:57 am

Mmmm coffee . . .

27 sue April 30, 2009 at 11:25 am

i get easily “drunk” on coffee too…that flavor sounds dangerous!

28 Emily April 30, 2009 at 11:26 am

Thanks for the heads up on the gmail emoticons! :)

Good luck with Biochem!!

29 Christina April 30, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Mm I feel like I could almost smell the cappuccino fudge from that picture. Sounds amazing, I love flavored coffee!

30 Jess April 30, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Oooh…a granola fullness experiment. I like it.

31 Susan April 30, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Those dried raspberries look delightful! I’ve never tried them before. Cereal is something I’ve just started eating again too. I usually sprinkle it on top of things because it’s so high calorie, but some days you just gotta give in and have a bowl! And it’s ohsogood when you do :)

32 Alex April 30, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Ahaha! That explains it – this post was emoticon overload!

33 Heather April 30, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Good job pushing yourself this morning to fit in that workout! Sounds like it was worth it!

That breakfast looks so good! It’s so important to listen to what your body is craving and even splurge on calories every once in a while as long as you keep your other meals in check. I totally admire how you are able to do that 😀

34 Chelsea April 30, 2009 at 12:54 pm

You’ve gone emoticon crazy!!!! 😉 You’re too cute.

35 Shannon (The Daily Balance) April 30, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Haha lovin the emoticons!

Nice workout this morning!

Breakfast looks delish, per usual 😉

36 Sara April 30, 2009 at 1:57 pm

hey kath,
don’t know what i’ve never asked this before– but why do you bike to the gym and then work out there? why not just take a long(er) bike ride for the cardio?

i hope your finals are going well! it will be over soon!!!

37 Sharon April 30, 2009 at 2:01 pm

OH wow, totally love it!

38 Kath April 30, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Kate ,
Sometimes. I wouldn’t say my stomach sticks way out like it would (does) after I eat 3 desserts, but it’s not flat either! I like to feel comfortably full though. If I am wearing a bathing suit, I do eat less :)

Sara ,
1 word: variety! I would get bored biking in circles. I like having a destination and getting there, doing something, and then going home. Plus more variety in cardio is good for the body.

39 Lauren April 30, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Mmmm that coffee sounds so good!

40 Michelle Hisae April 30, 2009 at 4:07 pm

Yeah, I’m definitely a fan of volume as far as cereal goes. That’s why I love TJ’s High Fiber O’s. More cereal for your calorie! Plus a LOT of fiber to keep you full.

41 Toni May 5, 2009 at 1:19 pm

The coffee sounds wonderful! I can’t wait to try it.

Thank You,
