Doom + Gloom

August 27, 2011

THANKFULLY there was no rain this morning, but we can feel the hurricane in the air

So here’s a cheerful breakfast to brighten your day

I was up at 6:30 after a restless night. There was a stink bug crawling on my arm, and both Matt and I had trouble falling sleep. I think we tossed and turned for 2 hours. It’s SO humid, but not hot enough to put the AC on.

Insta-cereal in a jar!

A mix of Quaker Oatmeal squares and Oikos (both from HLS!), banana, blueberries, chia seeds and peanut butter residue

Awake tea to try to keep me awake during our slicing event..

The Jefferson Sprint Triathlon was held pretty close to our house, so I walked there. Didn’t want to risk a downpour on my camera, so I just took my cell phone in a plastic bag.

Extremely impressed with the camera on the phone – and loved using this Retro Camera app!!

Athletes swam in the Fry’s Spring Beach Club pool and then biked + ran from there.

Bread on the other side!

Retro Fun

So thankful the rain held off!!

It’s funny, but you’d think I’d be inspired to go exercise after slicing bread at a race, but it always wears me out!! All I want to do is take a nap. I’m sure the weather doesn’t help! Perhaps I will settle in on some yoga as a compromise.

I hope you guys stay safe with the storm coming!

LOVE the last pic of you two! So sweet!

I really wanted to introduce myself to you at HLS, but I was too shy when I saw you, next time I will not be! Have a great day!

2 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 11:05 am

Awww I wish you’d said hello!! I’m shy myself :)

3 Katie August 27, 2011 at 11:19 am

Yeah I wish I did too! If you are going to foodbuzz, I will say hi and not be shy this time, haha!

4 Lorin August 27, 2011 at 2:36 pm

If it makes you feel better, I did that too about a month ago. But I kinda went out of the way to go to the bakery and say hi and didn’t. Haha, oh being shy can sometimes suck :)

5 Katie August 27, 2011 at 2:46 pm

I know it can! I try to tell myself to quit being shy!

6 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries August 27, 2011 at 11:07 am

Love the “vintage-ey” look of your photos!

7 Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing August 27, 2011 at 11:08 am

Wow, the camera pictures are legit! Sometimes I consider getting a nice smartphone just for the camera… it might be better than my dinky little digital 😉 Hehe. Hope you guys don’t endure too much craziness with the storm, and that you get a nap — I can definitely understand why slicing and serving hungry athletes all morning would be an energy drain! :)

8 Nikki August 27, 2011 at 11:08 am

Wow, your camera takes really good pictures off your phone! I tend to have to apologize for mine on the blog when that is all I have as they are grainy and really unless it is super sunny, awful!
I love the photo of the bread, do you guys carve the grain into every loaf??

9 Erika @ The Teenage Taste August 27, 2011 at 11:09 am

Freshly sliced bread after a triathlon?! Talk about motivation to finish! 😉

10 Krissy - Shiawase Life August 27, 2011 at 11:11 am

I like how those pics look! Very neat :)

11 tanya August 27, 2011 at 11:14 am

Did you contact the race to sponsor your business or did they contact you?
If you did, then how did you know about the race?
Just curious as I have a business and was wondering.

12 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 11:21 am

We contacted them to see if we could slice.

13 Susan August 27, 2011 at 4:59 pm

You can do a search on to find local races.

14 Sweet and Savvy August 27, 2011 at 11:16 am

Looks like a great Morning!!:)

15 Melody August 27, 2011 at 11:16 am

I hope you stay safe through the hurricane! I’m sort of worried for all my east coast friends!

16 Sara August 27, 2011 at 11:19 am

Looks like a such a treat for the runners. And probably a good arm workout for you and Matt.

17 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen August 27, 2011 at 11:21 am

Love that app on the camera, those pics are pretty darn good for the phone! The dreary weather is not motivating me either to workout. I have my workout clothes on but can’t seem to summon the desire to actually do something!

18 Ellie@fitforthesoul August 27, 2011 at 11:21 am

Kath and Matt, stay safe and take care!~I truly hope everything works out well for the East Coast. Praying for y’all! :)

19 Alexis August 27, 2011 at 11:23 am

Wow – nice pics from a phone.

What does Matt’s shirt say?

20 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 12:49 pm

“Save a Cow, Eat a Carb!”

21 Emily August 27, 2011 at 11:27 am

I agree – you should take the day off and probably watch some HGTV. I mean, you NEED ideas for your new house, right? 😉

22 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 12:49 pm

23 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table August 27, 2011 at 11:28 am

Love the pics and your OIAJ looks insanely good.

Hope you guys are hit too hard!

24 Hillary August 27, 2011 at 11:29 am

Watching other people exercise totally wears me out! Bizarre, I know.

25 Angel7 August 27, 2011 at 11:37 am

Naps are necessary, and refreshing!

26 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance August 27, 2011 at 11:41 am

Stay safe, Kath! Watch out for Irene

27 Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) August 27, 2011 at 11:46 am

Stay safe girl! Pretty sure I’d be staying inside rather than racing on a day like that, but I’m such a weinie when it comes to scary weather.

Be safe girl!

28 Cait @ beyond bananas August 27, 2011 at 11:46 am

How perfect that you are helping out at the race. Gh bread sounds like a fabulous fuel.

How do you like that pb?

29 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 12:49 pm

Like it!

30 Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles August 27, 2011 at 11:49 am

I love that you support local races and events. I always enjoy when business support their community!

31 Keelie August 27, 2011 at 12:15 pm

A nap and yoga sound like a great way to spend the afternoon!

P.S. I dream about that bread after having it at HLS. A.MAZING.

32 Alaina August 27, 2011 at 12:22 pm

I will seriously buy an iPhone or Droid just for that photo app. :-)

Hope you guys don’t get hit too bad by the storm!

33 Baking N Books August 27, 2011 at 12:35 pm

That last pic is cute. Are there other businesses serving food as well? Or other foods available?

34 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles August 27, 2011 at 12:54 pm

What a fun app for the phone! ……Looks like one great morning and the bread is calling my name. If I ever make it down you can bet I’ll be stopping in to say hello! :) (and eat a lot of bread!)

35 Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama August 27, 2011 at 12:59 pm

I think yoga is a perfect compromise for a stormy day. Curling up with a good book sounds pretty ideal, too. :-)

36 Cait's Plate August 27, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Oooh I LOVE that retro app as well! The one I have on my phone is not nearly as good.

Love that picture of the tent – it looks so awesome and if I were someone running a race and knew I had that to come to at the end, I would be one happy camper :)

37 Lynda @ healthy hoboken girl August 27, 2011 at 1:06 pm

I agree a good book and more fresh cinnamon swirl bread sounds perfect…

38 Cara August 27, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Stay safe in that weather! I hope you get to catch up on some sleep tonight. I might have screamed if I found a bug on my arm upon waking up!

39 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) August 27, 2011 at 1:31 pm

What app are you using on your phone – i love it! I am taking a rest day today – sort of unplanned, though, I woke up all headachey and with a runny nose.

40 lynn @ the actor's diet August 27, 2011 at 1:46 pm

good luck today!!!

41 kaila @ healthy helper! August 27, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Those racing events you guys slice at always look so fun! So great that you get involved in the community like that!

42 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 27, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Wonderful last picture of you and Matt! I’d just take the afternoon off and cuddle!

43 Khushboo August 27, 2011 at 2:22 pm

I want Matts tshirt- hilarious!!!

44 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 27, 2011 at 2:26 pm

awww! FUN! Love the photos. STAY safe :)

45 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 27, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Those picture effects are so cool! Stay safe!

46 Angela (Oh She Glows) August 27, 2011 at 3:32 pm

heh I used to feel the same way after the farmer’s market…so tiring! I considered all the prep, baking, and selling a workout in its own on Saturdays. 😉

47 Mary @ Bites and Bliss August 27, 2011 at 4:29 pm

I know what you mean! We volunteer at marathons doing the same thing, except in the form of making PB & honey sandwiches for all the runners. It’s exhausting!

48 Kate from the tri today August 27, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Great to see you at the tri today Kath! Thanks for coming out and bringing delicious bread. Can’t wait to buy myself some Dakota and some CVille Crunch :)

49 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Hey Kate!! It was fun hanging out. Hope to see you soon!!

50 Simply Life August 27, 2011 at 4:46 pm

glad things are okay there – I’m getting nervous here in Boston but hoping we don’t get too much damage! :)

51 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) August 27, 2011 at 4:55 pm

The weather has been making us extra sleepy, definitely the pressure. If we lose power, that might be the only thing we can do anyway, lol.

I love the retro picture apps! I need to download one. Fun :)

52 Lauren B. August 27, 2011 at 5:20 pm

I had to laugh when I read “peanut butter residue.” Mmmmmm… “residue” has never sounded so good! :)

I encourage you to take a nap… I am going to as well! Body is telling me to rest!

53 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 27, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Wow your camera takes great photos!

I’m always too tired to exercise after working too. I tried to go on a run after my 8 hour shift today, but I only lasted 10 minutes before turning around! 😛

54 Katherina @ Zephyr Runs August 27, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Man. I would love a phone that took pictures like that. My 4 year old blackberry has something like a .2 megapixel camera. It’s awesome. Though damage is serious, hurricanes are really fun. The feeling around town is this awesome camaraderie… have fun!

55 Mary Legare Whaley August 27, 2011 at 8:00 pm

I have the hardest time volunteering at races…because I hate being on the sidelines! But I would give the world to have freshly baked bread waiting for me after a race. Usually, all they have is junk. There may be a table of sad, overripe bananas, but there is always a table full of doughnuts or Chick-fil-a biscuits. I’ll never understand it…give me bread!

56 Lindsay August 27, 2011 at 10:10 pm

WOW! I dont know how you do it. Everytime you say that you dont have your air on, I think about how uncomfortable I would be if we didnt have our air on. Unfortunately one night this past week our air conditioner broke and we had to go a night without it and it was humid in the house. I could not sleep and I was thinking about you because I knew that I could NEVER do it.
So is it really only because you dont mind the warmth that you dont turn it on or do you think that air conditioning isnt “green” or “eco-friendly”??

57 KathEats August 27, 2011 at 10:12 pm

I just like fresh air. Sometimes it is really hot, but I just like breezes and the sound of crickets. I think AC feels so fake. When it’s 100* outside, I love it. But when it’s only 80*, I think breezes are better

58 Hannah August 27, 2011 at 11:07 pm

I hope you’re okay with the hurricane! Have been thinking of you all throughout today!

59 Katie @ Plates and Paste August 28, 2011 at 9:42 pm

That is a great app! I have hipstamatic on my iPhone but really like the look of your…unless it’s hipstamatic as well?
