Dogs + Bees Can Smell Fear

July 30, 2009

I had a busy day, although I didn’t really accomplish much.

I had my meeting with Mary this AM (cool things unveiling next week-ish) and then headed over to Kelsey’s new crib to meet PENNY!!!!

IMG_9959 (1024x768)

She was a doll! Look at her hiding in the pillows. She has more personality than any dog I’ve ever met! She licked me and literally played WITH me. Put her paws out. Can’t wait to go play some more. Hoping I can be in the wedding party for her marriage to Gilbert someday.

IMG_9958 (1024x768)

After our playing, Kelsey and I went to Yoga One.

IMG_9962 (1024x768)

It was almost noon so I had a few nuts. Shouldda had a bigger snack because I was famished afterwards but I wasn’t hungry. Yogurt did good!

IMG_9961 (1024x768)

Yoga rocked. It was delicious and I was rubbery. My shoulders feel a million times better!

I rushed home, changed out of my wet clothes, and wolfed down this amazing salad.

IMG_9965 (1024x768)

Romaine, green pepper, balsamic, leftover noodle salad, cilantro hummus and avocado.

IMG_9967 (1024x768)

Served with a pizza crust roll, which was baked with the leftover pizza crust from Monday night’s dough. Delish!

IMG_9968 (1024x768)

And some Tazo iced tea.

IMG_9969 (1024x768)

I was shaking with hunger, but this salad was too much for my empty stomach at once and it left me rather uncomfortable with my stomach sticking out a mile!

IMG_9964 (1024x768)

Do you spy a naughty orange cup!? I told you he leaves them everywhere!

IMG_9963 (1024x768)

Bee Careful…

I went out to mow the grass after lunch and was doing fine until I happened to look down and see a hole with BEES swarming out of it!!! I ditched the mower and ran.

IMG_9970 (1024x768)

About 10,000 bees were flying all around the mower. I wanted to finish the back yard but we couldn’t get to the mower! Google said to wait until dark to approach the nest (Follow the whole event recap on my Twitter feed @KathEats!)

Matt thought the bees wouldn’t be able to see him behind the bushes. He sprayed some wasp killer from a distance and I think that helped some…

IMG_9972 (1024x768)

But then we decided to rescue the mower. He put on a full bee suit…

IMG_9973 (1024x768)

And was going to rope in the mower with a hoe

IMG_9974 (1024x768)

But he decided that was too dangerous and changed his plan of attack to run through the mower and keep running until he was free of bees.

Here is the video! (Blog too annoying today to embed)

Crisis averted.

Have you guys found KERF to be super slow today??

Hmm, hard to pick a favorite tea, I used to work at a Teavana and have a huge basket of teas but I think my favorite is a mix of Rooibos Sweet Amore and Rose Marzipan black tea…so yummy!

Congrats guys! Please send me an email with your mailing address and contact info.

Glad no one got hurt in the bee debacle. :)

2 Jenn (www. ) July 30, 2009 at 5:21 pm

OMG, my hubby would freak out around if bees swarmed us! He has a bee and wasp phobia. 😯 You guys handled it fantastically, though! lol

Your salad is the bee’s knees! haha Looks REALLY comforting and filling, yum!

3 Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) July 30, 2009 at 5:21 pm

Wow! What a story about the bees! I would have been so scared!

7 Andee (Runtolive) July 30, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Wow that’s scary! I don’t know what I would do in that situation, probably call an exterminator or pray they go away lol

8 Caronae July 30, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Is the bee’s nest underground? If so, there is a whole different approach to getting rid of the nest (you can’t just spray them). Sorry, but I can’t remember what it is!

YEs, KERF has been very slow for me today…

9 KT July 30, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Scary Situation! Kerf has been very slow today. Couldn’t even get on a few times!

10 Joelle (The Pancake Girl) July 30, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Haha too funny- that is an intimidating bee suit, for sure!

11 Jen Papaya July 30, 2009 at 6:14 pm

Gah! Bees are terrifying. Glad everyone was OK!

12 Ryane July 30, 2009 at 6:15 pm

I agree! I love all of Kelsey’s posts about Penny – so sweet!
You need a KERF mascot, maybe create a love triangle for Penny and Gilbert?!

13 Chloe (Naturally Frugal) July 30, 2009 at 6:15 pm

What a gread husband!

I admire the fact that even though you’re famished after working out you always put something healthy together. Sometimes I feel like the Tazmanian devil hoovering up anything I can find after a long workout. Next time that happens I’ll challenge my inner KERF.

Cute puppy!

14 Deva July 30, 2009 at 6:22 pm

KERF has been slow today. WOW on the bees – i’m glad everyone is okay!

15 JB July 30, 2009 at 6:24 pm

16 Natalie (Will Jog for Food) July 30, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Too bad about the bees…i still haven’t been stung luckily (crossing fingers).

17 Faith July 30, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Your salad looks fabulous as usual!

Wow, that bee story sounds scary! I was attacked by only 1 bee today and I was scared, so I can’t even imagine dealing with thousands!

Also, just wanted to let you know, I couldn’t access KERF earlier today…I think it said page error or something like that :(

18 Yvonne July 30, 2009 at 7:32 pm

The bee incident is hilarious!

You are such a dog/animal lover… you should get one!! :)

19 Lindsay July 30, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Do you bite your fingernails? I only ask b/c I do too but I’m making some headway in quitting and thrilled to think I’m not alone! :)

20 Katey July 30, 2009 at 7:42 pm

21 Cait (Cait's Plate) July 30, 2009 at 7:54 pm

HAHAH! I like Matt’s bee suit – that’s classic.

I was reading your twitter updates and couldn’t wait to see this post!

Thanks for the Health Magazine help! It’s MUCH appreciated and I think you’ll have to get some goods in return! :)

22 Cynthia (It all changes) July 30, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Yikes about the bees! I’m allergic and would have ran and hid the rest of the day.

I love your friend’s dog. Ours have personality like that too. They think our pillows are theirs and actually put their heads on them. :-)

23 Anne K. July 30, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Penny is adorable!! I want a dog just like that 😀

The bee sitch sounds scary, though. Eek!

24 Adi ( July 30, 2009 at 8:06 pm

That’s one awesome Mower Rescue outfit!

25 Mrs. Myers @ Eat Move Write July 30, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Oh my goodness! That happened to me once on the riding lawn mower! I was like 5 years old sitting on my dad’s lap! We had to go to the hospital! It was terrible!

26 Marissa July 30, 2009 at 8:10 pm

AWW!! Penny is super cute!

27 Angela (Oh She Glows) July 30, 2009 at 8:11 pm

32 Jen @ Kiss the Hem of Her Apron July 30, 2009 at 8:35 pm

KERF doesn’t seem slow — it just seems green! Your salad looks incredible: romaine, pepper, cilantro hummus, and avocado?

I’m craving some green now. Mmmm!

Glad you both emerged from the bee fiasco unscathed! :)

36 Penny July 30, 2009 at 8:47 pm

I love that I share a name with that adorable dog. Me loves dogs. :-)

37 Emily July 30, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Oh man, bees are so scary! I stepped on a WASP in my backyard on Monday!! PSA: Do not walk barefoot in your yard if you live around lots of wasps!!!!!!!

38 Heather July 30, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Penny is so cute. That video was awesome – I would have been so scared of the bees too! Glad no one was stung!

39 Kate July 30, 2009 at 8:53 pm

That whole incident sounds super scary and funny too! Matt in the bee outfit was hilarious! Seriously, funniest post ever. I love this blog!

Just one note of caution though: the number of bees are in steep decline all over the world, so we all should lay off the wasp killing spray, as we really don’t want to be killing bees. Without them nothing gets pollinated and we don’t get any food!

40 Brianna July 30, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Kath, that video was *hilarious* – it actually made me laugh out loud. What a great documentary :)

41 Kath July 30, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Lindsay ,
No but I keep them trimmed. I do bite my skin out of nervousness. Gross, I know. Bad habit.

Kate ,
True, true. How do we get rid of them safely then!?

42 Casey July 30, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Great video! Penny always seems to have personality in Kelsey’s pictures! My mom’s dog has a great personality too!

43 Rebecca July 30, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I love your furniture!! And that video is hilarious!!

44 Sally July 30, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Way to go, Matt! And Penny is just too cute!

Once when I was younger I was playing hide and go seek in the woods and I accidently sat on a bees nest. It was more scary than anything else and thankfully I didn’t end up with that many stings.

45 Millie July 31, 2009 at 12:40 am

We sprayed ether (from the automotive dept.) on a wasp nest one time. It put them to sleep until my husband got it out of the bush.

46 Shannon (The Daily Balance) July 31, 2009 at 8:20 am

hahahahah! I’m laughing because my mom tells a similar story about my dad. Early in the marriage when they first bought a hose, my dad was so excited to mow HIS OWN lawn. I guess he was a little TOO excited, because he didn’t realize he mowed over a bees next! Unlike you, he wasn’t as fortunate! They FLEW UP HIS PANTS and stung him multiple times. OUCH. For the next few months, my dad mowed the lawn with jeans tucked into combat boots and a ski mask – no wonder their neighbors thought they were crazy 😉

47 allijag July 31, 2009 at 8:54 am

PENNY!!!!! God I love her! :) I told Kelsey – if she goes missing, don’t look in Cleveland! 😉

48 Jamie Walker July 31, 2009 at 10:32 am

Love your site! So funny about the bees!

49 Lauren July 31, 2009 at 11:50 am

I loved the animal theme of this post. Matt to the rescue!

What kind of dog is Penny? She is utterly ADORABLE, and looks kind of like our dog (who we adopted and thus are unsure which breed she is.)

50 Natalie M. August 13, 2009 at 5:33 pm

LOL@ that video… man that was hilarious.. loved the guest appearance by the mower as himself!

I just have to say I absolutely adore your living room.. the accent wall is gorge!!! You have great taste Kath.. and the chairs looks great with the new fabric!
