Curtain Call

August 16, 2012

Before we get to the mac daddy of all burgers, a word on our new curtains!!

I decided not to get curtains for the living room for multiple reasons: a more modern feel, the fact that we already had a pair of fancy Pottery Barn green curtains and I didn’t know what would match, the position of the couch, the cost, the fact that we don’t use this room very much.

But in a year of living here, I know that at night when it’s dark, everyone on our street can see right in. Not really a big deal since we don’t hang out in this room at night, but when I walk from my bedroom to the kitchen in the middle of the night, people can technically see in. And in the winter, the dining room is more visible too. My mind began to crank about coming out here from the nursery to nurse in the comfy chairs at night and I realized we needed to do something about the windows.

Privacy was a must!

An outdated before photo:

We went to Bed, Bath and Beyond on Sunday to look for options. I was actually planning to sew curtains, and I knew I wanted white because not many other options would have matched our existing green ones.  I also wanted minimal color/pattern to keep the room as open/airy as possible.

BB&B was a disaster. I didn’t like any of the fabrics or colors and nearly all of the curtains were $40 and not the right length. I knew with my sewing machine I could hem them, but I hated to spend $40 on one panel and chop it in half!

SEW, I figured I was going to have to sew them to fit

Until I did a quick search at Amazon and found these Silk-like curtains for $8.96 each. I’m not sure I could have bought fabric that cheap! Also, LOVE grommets!!

We did some measuring and found this stately rod on Amazon too. Having had a double-wide rod in our old house, I knew they had a tendency to bend in the middle, so the reviews on this one put it in my shopping cart – I knew it would be big and sturdy. It actually turned out to be much bigger of a rod than I had imagined, but I kind of like the weight it gives to the room.

And the result – curtains that work right over the couch!!

Matt and I did a test last night and despite not being lined, you can’t see a thing from the street – even with all the lights on.

Mission accomplished. And despite the fact that I often prefer windows without treatments, I’m really liking the formality they add to the room. And the coziness at night!

So about that burger…

Karen brought over all of her leftovers from Tuesday’s party for dinner. We had burgers with Seaside Cheddar and Cheddar Garlic buns – plus condiments. This was perhaps the best burger I’ve had all summer!

Because of the bun. And the cheese. Totally.

On the side we broiled strips of zucchini that one of our employees accidentally sliced thinking it was a cucumber at the bakery : ) Loved eating it this way!

Red Zinger Tea on the side!

Poor Matt is so tired because I kept him up last night with all my flipping and flopping, so tonight I’m going to test out the bed in the nursery and let him get a solid night’s sleep at the same time. It makes sense to sleep in the nursery bed at least once before we bring the little one home!

I think the curtains are perfect! They really make the room ‘pop’ and look very professional.

3 j3nn August 16, 2012 at 7:19 pm

That burger looks perfect! A little small, but perfect in all other ways. :)

4 Amy August 16, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Did you hang the curtains on both windows? In the outdated photo it looks like you have green curtains on the second/other window.

5 KathEats August 16, 2012 at 7:43 pm

The green curtains are still there. The white ones were just added to the bigger window

6 Kitty August 16, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Privacy is good! Just to clarify, do you have two different sets of curtains (and rods) in the same room, or did you also do the same white curtains on the other window? I like the airiness of of the white, but think you should have done the same style and length of treatment on both windows. I guess I read too many decor blogs!

7 KathEats August 16, 2012 at 8:12 pm

yes two different. the windows themsleves are different enough that I think I can get by with two styles.

8 Ali August 16, 2012 at 10:30 pm

I sooooo agree! Seems very odd to me.

9 ellie August 17, 2012 at 2:07 am

I agree — I’ve never seen a room with two different kinds of curtains, but hey, it takes all kinds to make a world! :)

10 Tabatha August 16, 2012 at 8:06 pm

You got quite the deal on the curtains! They look fantastic in the room and will add so much privacy when it is needed with a newborn in the middle of the night! :)

16 Lynn August 16, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Love the curtains. How is your friend Faith? I haven’t seen many posts lately with her in them & just wondering if she is okay. Enjoy your blog.

The curtains are great!! Baby Berf is going to come home to a lovely home.

Lol.. I had lunch at the bakery today (my once a month splurge when I come in to C’Ville from Richmond) and the cukes on my Monticello were sliced like that.

19 KathEats August 16, 2012 at 9:21 pm

20 Averie @ Averie Cooks August 16, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Gorgeous work, Kath! And yes, window treatments of any kind, from curtains to rods to blinds to even the hooks to tie curtains onto are all SO Ridiculously! expensive. Glad you found the perfect thing at a great price!

21 Diana @ frontyardfoodie August 16, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Whoa, only nine bucks a panel!? That’s insane and they are gorgeous!

I’m looking in to new curtains in our living room and those look so great that I’m inspired to get something light and airy. I LOVE all your posts on your home. They get me motivated to continue my work on our’s.

23 Lindsey @ Pas de Deux August 16, 2012 at 9:36 pm

The curtain look great! That seaside cheddar cheese is soooo yummy! I love smoke cheeses– such great flavor. Hope the night in the nursery bed goes well.

24 Angel7 August 16, 2012 at 9:38 pm

I love the curtains! That is an outstanding price for them!

I can totally relate to flipping & flopping in bed at night!!! I just want one (or more) efficient night’s sleep! It would make me feel so much better the next day!

25 Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats August 16, 2012 at 9:46 pm

Kath, your living room is absolutely breathtaking! I wish I had an eye for flow and style. I look at your photos and go “Wow. I could never do that.” I’d end up buying a whole bunch of things that, when put together, didn’t go. How did you develop your skills?

26 Jeri August 16, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Hi Kath! Burger looks amazing. I know I haven’t posted, but I have been busy. Just wanted you and the ladies and gents if there are any to know that I am down another 5.2 pounds for a total of 17.1 from Feb 22. YAY!!

Thanks for all your advice! Next weigh-in is Sep 13. Going for a 4 pound loss to get me to 225. Nice and slow, the right way this time.

27 KathEats August 17, 2012 at 6:34 am

rock on!!

28 Fallon August 16, 2012 at 11:07 pm

30 Sheena August 17, 2012 at 12:06 am

That burger looks simply WOW! I have to try it sometime.

Oh btw, I love your living room. It’s so neat and tidy.

31 Lani August 17, 2012 at 12:22 am

Kath, It looks pretty and home-y! I hope I get to Cville before too long and see the place. I’m so excited for you guys– it’s almost berf-day! :)

Ps: did I tell you my sis is having her babe almost the exact same time as you? Fun.

32 Michelle (Peachy Palate) August 17, 2012 at 1:28 am

Love those curtains! And cheddar garlic buns!? Heaven!!!

35 Betsey C. August 17, 2012 at 8:13 am

This is totally random, but I have read your wonderful blog for years, and we haven’t seen anything about Matt’s brother in ages. He is such a cutie, and I was just wondering how he is doing.

36 KathEats August 17, 2012 at 8:20 am

He is good!! Still in New Orleans, workin’ hard and playin’ hard. Hope he’ll come visit us soon when the baby’s born!

37 Ann August 17, 2012 at 8:30 am

INSPIRED! That zucchini looks beautiful.

38 Joanna @ Midwestern Bite August 17, 2012 at 8:41 am

BB&B is crazy expensive!! And I’ve had to take numerous panels back because when I got them home one was an inch shorter than the other. The house we are in the process of buying has tons of windows that will need curtains and I honestly have not thought about where I will find them. I’m hesitant to buy online just because it’s so hard to truly see the color. Unless of course you go with white ;). Room looks great!

39 Ellen @ Wannabe Health Nut August 17, 2012 at 1:48 pm

That looks like the perfect bite, YUM!

40 Megan S. August 17, 2012 at 2:24 pm

What color is on your walls in these pics? LOVE IT!

41 KathEats August 17, 2012 at 2:52 pm

Benjamin Moore Bird’s Egg

42 Jeri August 19, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Megan, Thanks for posting the question of the color as well as the color Kath. I want to add a nice shade of blue to my living room without over powering it with Tiffany Box blue. That is the perfect color! You both Rock!!

43 MommyPage August 17, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Your home is beautiful. The color of your walls is so calm and warm! Those curtains will definitely help you have some privacy.

44 Stuart August 23, 2012 at 11:31 am

That burger looks amazing. I’ve been going through your blog with my partner and now we are having burgers for tea and decided we need new curtains!
