Crème de le Crème

April 22, 2011

Even though I work 7 days a week, there’s still something about Fridays that is really exciting! I do lighten my load on the weekends, but I also think it’s having the rest of the world off that makes me want to join in on the fun!

Friday cheer!

For breakfast we made a filling bowl of oatmeal mixed with wheatberries and Traderspoint Banana-Mango Yogurt. I’ve never stirred yogurt INTO oats before for fear that it curdles, but this worked out great!

Crème de la Crème Oats

In The Pot: [On medium heat, stir till it’s done!]

  • 2 tbsp Scottish oats
  • 2 tbsp rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp wheatberries (cooked)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp Banana Mango Yogurt, stirred in at end and cooked for 10 seconds more (I wouldn’t do this with regular yogurt, but since it was a pourable kind, I think it worked better)

A fruity tea I found in my tea jar that I did not love. Surprise, surprise.

Breadcast #2 – Whole Grain HQ – is LIVE!

Going to Body Pump in a bit, likely in my automobile due to liquid falling from the sky : (

All of these tea fails – I would be tempted to switch back to coffee, lol! TGIF!

2 Stacy @ Every Little Thing April 22, 2011 at 8:08 am

Friday does have its own magic, certainly.

I am not huge on warm tea. I love fruity iced teas though!

3 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat April 22, 2011 at 8:08 am

I think that’s my favorite oatmeal and spoon combo you’ve shown in a while. I’ve only added yogurt post-cooking, glad this worked for you!

4 Khushboo April 22, 2011 at 8:09 am

I tried yogurt with my oatmeal once before but wasn’t a fan! The meal was neither hot nor cold! Yogurt mixed with raw oats, however, I lovee!

5 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine April 22, 2011 at 8:09 am

I love the word creme. It’s just so fun, isn’t it? Those oats do look pretty creamy and top-notch!!

6 Holly @ The Runny Egg April 22, 2011 at 8:11 am

I hear you — even in my old job where I did work weekends, I was still excited for Fridays.

7 Kelly April 22, 2011 at 8:14 am

For a dessert like breakfast treat, chop 1/2-1 oz good dark chocolate on your hot oats and top with a dollop of Greek yogurt. The chocolate melts and is so rich and decadent against the contrast of oats and cold Greek yogurt. Yummmmm…. :)

8 Allison @ Happy Tales April 22, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I remember when you told me about this, Kelly, and it’s been a keeper in my oats rotation for when I want something sweet! It’s *so good*!!

9 Sarah @ goingongoals April 22, 2011 at 8:17 am

love the placemat!

10 Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me April 22, 2011 at 8:19 am

I can’t get down with fruity teas either. It tastes artificial or something. I don’t know, I just hate it. Blegh!

11 Lesley Lifting Life April 22, 2011 at 8:19 am

I work a lot on the weekends too, but get extra excited for Fridays, there’s just a feeling in the air, ha.

12 Sarah @ See Sarah Graduate April 22, 2011 at 8:20 am

i agree! I’m usually super busy on the weekends but even so, there’s just something about Fridays that put me in a better mood. :)

13 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) April 22, 2011 at 8:27 am

I was just thinking that today about Fridays. We own our business and work from home, but Fridays just feel different. I hope you have a great one Kath!

14 Amy April 22, 2011 at 8:29 am

Burlington’s GH website has no nutritional info on the Trek Bars— but I just want to say it’s a good thing I live 2 hours from the nearest GH Bakery! I did make it last two days…..but it was hard to resist! It’s an awesome business concept, and I’m sure you will be very successful!

15 Jess April 22, 2011 at 8:30 am

Hey! In both the interest of your amazing breadcast (as well as my fiance’s business…. lol) I wanted to tell you I can’t get the link to work!

16 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 8:40 am

Oh no! It works fine for me! Could it be your internet blocking?

17 Jess April 22, 2011 at 8:41 am

Must have just been a blip at this stupid hospital :-) Our internet is awful! Sorry to scare you :-)

18 Natalie @ Will Jog For Food April 22, 2011 at 8:36 am

I just had wheatberries for the first time on Monday, and now I’m hooked! I love the texture & taste :)

19 Olena April 22, 2011 at 8:40 am

Hey Kath,

I was wondering if you could add ‘next post’ ‘previous post’ links immediately after each post, before the comments? I have just finished catching up on mere three days of enties, and if one doesn’t wanna read through the comments, it’s a bit of a nuisance to scroll down through dozens of comments, especially if reading on the go, without a mouse. Thanks!

20 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 8:42 am

That is a great suggestion – let me see if it’s easy to do. If it is, I’ll do it, but if it’s complicated, I don’t want to break anything!

21 Olena April 22, 2011 at 8:45 am

Awesome, thanks.

22 Joyce @ Flowing to Fifty April 22, 2011 at 8:41 am

Happy rainy Friday. It’s kinda fitting for Good Friday, don’t you think? Fruit tea just doesn’t cut it on a work day – even a Friday. Go get some coffee, girlfriend!

23 Baking Books April 22, 2011 at 8:42 am

Yep. I don’t get many days off. But today I do. And I slept in. But since I also do work at home – I feel super guilty! :( Big surprise. But I need to give myself a break already.

I love yogurt in oats.

24 Angel7 April 22, 2011 at 8:43 am

I have the same feeling that you do about Fridays. Hooray!!!

Coffee might be your answer to not really liking the teas you have on-hand :) Maybe your body is going through withdrawal, and it is telling you “Give me coffee!!! No tea!!!” :)

25 Krystina (Organically Me) April 22, 2011 at 8:44 am

I’m with you on peppermint tea – it’s just the best!

26 Sam April 22, 2011 at 8:44 am

It’s Friday, Friday… Getting down on Friday.

We we we so excited

Have a great one Kath!

27 Leslie April 22, 2011 at 8:45 am

I so agree with you on teas. I stick to English Breakfast or Peppermint, and when occasionally I try something fruity and the whole box ends up in the lunchroom at work. I just can’t do it-not sure why?
I do love tea though, and when it warms up here in Oregon I will switch from hot to iced. I love, love, love, my iced tea maker. I make a batch every few days in the summer and it always turns out perfect!

28 Rachel @ The Avid Appetite April 22, 2011 at 8:46 am

I always love your sweet placemats, bowls and utensils. So pretty and fun!

29 Lauren at Keep It Sweet April 22, 2011 at 8:50 am

I think everyone is generally happier on Fridays, so the good mood is probably contagious as well!

30 Cait @ Beyond Bananas April 22, 2011 at 8:57 am

Boo to rain! I think you use your legs for transportation so much.. that it is okay for you to drive just this once!

31 Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama April 22, 2011 at 8:57 am

I’m a stay-at-home mom and I get excited about Fridays! :-) I think it’s just ingrained in me from my earliest school days, because I definitely don’t get the weekend off from my mommy duties.

32 Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food April 22, 2011 at 9:05 am

I feel the same way about Friday even with the seven day work week! :)

Have a great day and a fun body pump class! :)

33 val April 22, 2011 at 9:17 am

Fridays are ALWAYS exciting, even when there is rain. It’s raining here too… boooo!

34 Christine @ Burning It Off April 22, 2011 at 9:26 am

I have so much time off during the week (yay for part time employment) that I really shouldn’t be so excited every time Friday rolls around… yet I always am. You’re right, there’s something about everyone else having the time off that makes it more fun!

35 Pearl (Crunch and Chew) April 22, 2011 at 9:31 am

I always have yogurt in my oats! Greek yogurt adds the most amazing tang.

36 Marieke April 22, 2011 at 9:32 am

I don’t like many fruit teas, they seem too sour! And a lot of other teas (like mint, green etc) seem to “grassy” or “bitter” to me. I like liquorice tea though.

37 Colleen (What's Baking in the Barbershop) April 22, 2011 at 9:33 am

I just bought those same beer towels for my boyfriend on Etsy! Thanks for the great gift idea. :) Happy almost weekend!

38 Sarah April 22, 2011 at 9:48 am

mango yogurt? nut butter? interesting. The flying squirrel nutbutter always looks so good! I hope they start selling it, I want to try some!

39 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 11:14 am

They do sell it! On their site

40 Natalia - a side of simple April 22, 2011 at 9:50 am

Glad you liked the yogurt and oats combo! I always mix them together and have never had trouble with it curdling. Happy Friday!!

41 Liz @ Tip Top Shape April 22, 2011 at 9:52 am

As someone still getting through college, I definitely love Fridays :)

42 lynn @ the actor's diet April 22, 2011 at 10:05 am

i also have an unconventional work week but i definitely feel the weekend buzz – that’s when everyone else in the world is on the same schedule as me!!!

43 Alaina April 22, 2011 at 10:43 am

I love the green and orange combination!!

What type of tea did you have? My favorite lately is the Montebello Apple Spice from the Fairmont Hotel. No sugar required! Sweet on it’s own. :-)

44 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 11:14 am

This was a sample from a GH tea company – it was like Winter Sun or something?

45 Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out April 22, 2011 at 10:46 am

Hmm, do you think kefir would work?

46 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 11:14 am

47 Rachel April 22, 2011 at 10:46 am

Ever since Chobani discontinued their vanilla flavor, my morning breakfasts have been ruined… Until yesterday, when I tried your doughboy smoothie. It was AMAZING, I had it for dinner last night and breakfast this morning. I may never go back to chobani when they bring the flavor back.. ok I will, but this smoothie is definitely staying in the breakfast rotation!

48 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 11:15 am

So glad!!

I didn’t know they discontinued it!

49 Emily May 3, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Alert, alert- you can welcome back your favorite breakfast! We didn’t discontinue our Vanilla. We wouldn’t do that to you! :) To meet high demand, we had to get a bit “creative” with our production tactics, so we slowed it down on the Vanilla for a while. But, it’s back on the line and should be in your stores very soon. Sorry for the inconvenience!

And Kath, can’t believe this is your first time w/ ‘gurt in your oats! You’re the oat QUEEN- thought you’d tried it all! 😉

50 Tasha @ Voracious April 22, 2011 at 10:53 am

Our weekends here are Thursday and Friday, the work week is Sat – Wed, so tomorrow it’s back to work for us! I love your eats, but I REALLY love that spoon. It’s lovely.

51 Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie) April 22, 2011 at 10:54 am

I still haven’t tried the hot oatmeal and yogurt combo, I usually only do it with my overnight oats. Gotta give it a try 😀

52 kaila @ healthy helper! April 22, 2011 at 10:56 am

Fridays are always nice….except when they mark the last spring break day I have off until school starts up again next week :( I am sure that bowl of oats was suuuuper creamaaay!

53 Chelsea April 22, 2011 at 10:57 am

I love adding yogurt to oats! It is my regular default breakfast :) I love Fridays too.

54 Justeen @ Blissful Baking April 22, 2011 at 11:11 am

I always look forward to Fridays too!
Yogurt in oatmeal sounds yummy! I’ve had yogurt on top of my oats before, but didn’t love it.

55 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) April 22, 2011 at 11:22 am

Just finished listening to the breadcast! I’ll take a slice of the Cville Crunch, thanks :)

56 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin April 22, 2011 at 11:25 am

I’m not a fan of fruity teas either. Except for apple cinnamon tea – I love that it tastes like apple cider!

57 Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) April 22, 2011 at 11:35 am

I love those beer towels! My boyfriend would LOVE them.

58 Kaitlyn @ 7 Plates April 22, 2011 at 11:55 am

Looks good. I think I will be making my first overnight oats this week! :)

59 Hilary April 22, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Hmmm…neat trick with the oatmeal/yogurt. My mom always adds yogurt to her oatmeal, but after it’s cooked, as a topping.

60 Anastasia April 22, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I love Fridays.. they definitely feel special.

Your food looks amazing as always. I’m really digging that mug and the letterpress look of the placemat.

61 MonsteRawr April 22, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Is that place mat beer themed or is it politely trying to call you fat? Because if it’s the latter, I think you need to have a discussion about tact.

62 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Um, I am definitely not calling myself fat! It’s from a collection of beer towels.

63 cbr April 24, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Um, weird.

64 Krissy @ Shiawase Life April 22, 2011 at 12:56 pm

Listening to the Breadcast! I am learning a LOT! =D

65 Krissy @ Shiawase Life April 22, 2011 at 1:00 pm

I want to try Cville crunch RIGHT NOW. UGH, June 3. Be. Here. Now!!!!!

66 Andrea @ The Skinny Chronicles April 22, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Just had to say I love those photos…Tea and oats have never looked so beautiful.

67 Alyssa April 22, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Kath, have you ever been to a Teavana?? I think you would love it. It is a bit pricey, but they have some of the best teas and tea blends I’ve ever tasted. My favorite is the Matevana as of yet…yum :-)

68 Lauren April 22, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Kath, you should send me this picture an enter it in my Breakfast Bowl Contest ( It would be a perfect entry. :)

69 KathEats April 22, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Awww fun, but I don’t want to compete – I’m shy!

70 Ally April 22, 2011 at 8:41 pm

I love yogurt mixed with my oats! I scoop in a big spoonful of Greek yogurt. Yum!
