Our springy weather was awesome, but it didn’t last long! I think those tulips are now waiting by the window for it to return!
I went out walking in the sunshine glory this afternoon to meet my friend Heather for a coffee.
Break out the sunnnies!
This nerd also walk with headphones for audio books and mom chatting ; ) And my FUL bag stocked with my camera for mid-walk self photography!
I didn’t end up wanting a coffee (it was too warm out!) but we got to catch up on a bench for a while
When I returned, we headed over to Karen’s to heat up some leftovers and finally get her computer up and running!! It was a fun task, but can you imagine the irony when Comcast decided to interrupt service just when I was getting started! We really thought the computer was broken – again – for a moment.
I was excited about dinner all day – heat + eat!!
Leftover meatloaf (LOVED this recipe!)
Leftover Greens Casserole
And a huge pile of kale massaged in garlic gold lemon vinaigrette!!
Dark chocolate for dessert : )

What a cute video
Have a great night!
Love the video!!
And leftovers are ALWAYS a good thing.
~
very cute video!
spiiiiiiider
all americans (southern, or otherwise) misprounounce my name…you all have accents compared to us canadians!
americans say a-LAWN-a usually instead of the correct a-LAN-a (rhymes with banana)
i secretly love it though!
Funny, I know a Canadian Elana and she pronounces it e-LAN-a. I say it more like e-LAH-na than e-LAWN-a though.
Heehee I agree, as a Canadian I find that Karen, Matt and Kath all have southern accents. Although I do hear Karen’s a bit more
Oh and I love that she said BUGGY! And Karen you do not look like you would be attending a 40 year reunion! You look great
Maggie – me too! Kath’s and Matt’s accents subtle (certain words they say bring it out); Karen’s is far more pronounced (to my ears).
No wonder you like hanging out with your mother-in-law so much – she is precious! And she’s right – there is NO WAY she could be anywhere close to going to a 40 year class reunion! She looks fabulous. You need to do a post about how she keeps her skin looking so young and fresh.
She will love you. Also, she slathers vaseline on her face every night!
My grandmother used to put cold cream on her face every night, and now if I do not have my usual face moisturizer, I use cold cream too.
I agree! She looks great!!
More Karen! More Karen!
She’s great and no, I wouldn’t have guessed her age.. Would have gone with early 50′s at the oldest. She is awesome!
That was WAY better than any crap on TV. Karen–you are adorable!!
Oh – Karen is too adorable!! and jealous of your sunshine!!
Mmm Chocolove!! That’s my absolute favorite chocolat and my favorite flavor. You’re videos are adorable:) Matt and his mama are so cute!
Love your MIL!! She is super fun and cute
So cute! I guess its because I’m from Mississippi, but I’ve heard waaaayy worse than spy-der! She’s precious.
oh my gosh I LOVE Karen. Can she be my Mom?! and yes, she doesnt look a day over 29
I love her “accent”… You are blessed woman to have her as a mother-in-law!
Karen + her southern accent are adorable! Loved this
she is the cutest thing! i can totally see how you two would have fun together. My favorite word she said was “again”… rolled off the tongue like butter
Awww love the video!!!
Super pretty pictures too! You are gorgeous!
oh my gosh i loooovee her accent! and she def doesnt look more than her 25th highschool reunion!
Cool accent… neat video…. and tell her she does not look old enough to be celebrating her 40th reunion.
Karen is so super cute. Love her accent.
I would love to have the meatloaf recipe!
Those sunny pictures make me happy.
Karen is adorable! Also adorable? The fact that Matt’s accent is stronger when his mom is around.
OK, off to slather Vaseline on my face!
That second picture (the first one of you) is amazing! Like something out of a magazine.
p.s. Karen you definitely do NOT look old enough to be 40 years out of high school.
Karen is so freakin adorable!!! And she does not look old enough to be going to a 40th year reunion!!
I need to do this, but I don’t ‘know if I want to record my “ya you betcha” MN voice
you are such a rockstar in that first photo. i love it. well… almost as much as karen’s accent. you know, the first time i saw the husband in a video, his accent shocked me, too! and i have no idea why. the drawl just makes you guys even more lovable.
Aviators + dark chocolate = my favorite.
Karen is beautiful, tell her to keep smiling!
You have a great face for aviator sunglasses! I have a big forehead and they make me look like an alien
Your pretty weather is making me want to get out and take a long walk.
aww, karen is such a good sport to do the video! she definitely has quite the southern accent!
and she’s right – she doesn’t look old enough to have gone to a 40 year high school reunion!
I could listen to Karen talk all day. She definitely doesn’t look old enough to have graduated 40 years ago! What a fun video!
You look like such an old-school movie star in your sunnies!
So fun! I love listening to different accents. Thanks for sharing
I like your sunglasses! And the video is so cute haha, interesting to hear
Awww, Karen has my favorite kind of accent – sweet and Southern. Makes me want to hang out with all of you and a pitcher of iced tea (and discuss how to look good 40 years after high school!).
How cute. I actually didn’t detect an accent until you and Matt spoke but then again I’m in TX where the spider is a daddy long legs and the grocery cart is a buggy. She is absolutely adorable! I think my mother in law puts vasoline on her face too.
im originally from MS and i think her accent sounds normal
i live in colorado now and i think ive lost my accent too
but i an tell it comes back when im talking to someone from home on the phone or when i go home
:)
AH! Karen is a woman after my own heart! “Buggy” and “tennis shoes” are the same as me!
Awww, so fun!
This is how I imagine southern accents. Sweet and charming! What a lovely lady!
awww, give Karen a break! her southern accent isn’t bad at all! my grandma’s is WAY more noticeable. karen didn’t even say “ohll” instead of “oyl” for oil!
Karen is so cute! And “spah-der” was my favorite word too!
I think Karen and Matt both have accents! Matt’s is just as bad.
But I can understand them at least.
Yes Karen you don’t look old enough to have a 40 year reunion at all! You are radiant.
Karen is too precious. I love her.
Cute video!
As a west coast girl & speech pathologist, I kinda think you and Matt have stronger accents than Karen. I can tell why she says she thinks she lost it in Denver. Cute Mom!
Really!?!?!?
i love aviator shades
Karen is so adorable! I love her accent, and she and Matt look so much alike.
Also, I love your necklace Kath, do you remember where you got it?
I bought it when I was in Kenya
Ha! I guess I won’t be running out to buy it then. It’s gorgeous though, and so were the earrings you were wearing!
Haha, she is so cute! I love her accent!
Karen is awesome and I love her accent. It’s definitely stronger than yours and Matt’s. Can she have a regular Vlog on KERF?
What else should we do with her!?
Get her to read Little Miss Muffet…… along came a spiiiiiider
Hahaha South Caroliiiiiiiiiiina
OMG Karen is adorable! and Beautiful! I am having a really hard time believing that she is 40 years out of high school! And I plan on getting me some Vaseline ASAP because clearly something is working for her!
Great to see more of Karen! (I remember her birthday party & a few other snippets.) Lovely accent, and it’s so cute to see Matt’s accent get more pronounced when he’s around his mom!
Karen is the cutest! I love “tinnis shoes.”
It was great to hear Karen’s voice after seeing her pixs and reading about the fun that you have with her. She seems so sweet and generous! You know, it’s a real gift to have a great relationship with your MIL! I’m a little envious….
Adorable – No, I would have to agree with everyone when they say she doesn’t look her age. No way does she look like she should be going to a 40 year reunion.
Funny to hear her say “Buggy” – I’m from Florida and that is what everyone calls it – In the town where I am from, everyone has an accent like Karen <3 Too cute!
You look GORGEOUS in that first photo with your shades on! Just gorgeous : )
Thaaaanks
I noticed the chocolate wrapper said sea salt + Almonds. Do you mind me asking what brand chocolate that is? Thanks! =)
I don’t remember the name, but I think it was the one that looks like a postcard?
So fun to get to hear Karen! Her accent is very pronounced!
Karen is just darling! (and Matt most definitely has a Southern accent to my ears)
What a beautiful day!
I love Karen’s accent! It really makes me miss Charleston. Right now I am in Denver and can’t wait to get back! Personally I think all of y’all have a southern accent, Karen’s being the strongest, followed by Matt, then Kath.
What a sweet MIL!!! She is so fun:) Glad she was willing to play along because I LOVE her accent!!! Oh and loved how she says y’all:)
Massaged kale is a new favorite of mine! Thanks for turning me on to this amazing stuff
I’m going to guess that a million people have said this by now but Matt’s mom is adorable. I love how she was “Made” to do the video but by the end was going off on stories of her own haha.
Funny story… I’m a court reporter here in Los Angeles and I recently did a trial where one of the attorneys was from Texas and said “y’all” ALLLLL the time… I literally had to call a senior reporter double-check how to spell it in the transcript because I had never heard it said before haha. Now I know
Karen is so charming and I looooove her accent.
I love that you are not afraid to eat dessert.
: )
Love these photos – the color seems exceptionally gorgeous and vibrant. Your sunglasses suit you really well too. Can’t wait til we get our spring weather in MA (though I’m in Australia at the moment, and it’s super hot and summery.)
I love her accent
Love the fabric you have the vase on, where is it from?
Fabric.com
I love the videos and all the sunshine.
Awww, Karen is adorable!!! I’ve always wondered what she sounded like.
Oh my goodness Karen is such a doll! You are all adorable!
a walk outside?!?! Wow, at least this is giving me hope that warmer weather is possible right now
I think we need to move- hope your sister is surviving this winter in Boston!
she sounds so much friendlier than i expected! really fun to hear matt’s voice, too.
Love Karen and LOVE her accent!
woah youre teeth are so straight!
I just love how colorful your dinner was.
Thanks to braces
I love these videos. She has a great accent and she really doesn’t look old enough to have gone to a 40th class reunion! Yeah for southern women!
my favorite thing about having a fridge/freezer full of leftovers? mixing and matching!
Okay, I Totally think Matt has a Southern accent!! I noticed Karen said ‘Pecawn’ instead of ‘Pecaan’! I think I say ‘Pecaan’. Ha ha!
She really does look FANTASTIC, never would have guessed she was at her 40yr reunion!
Karen, you have a beautiful Southern accent, and you do not look old enough to be going to a 40 year class reunion, but enjoy!
Am I the only person who calls “rolly pollys” Potato Bugs??
Yes! I think potato bugs are a totally different species
I’ve heard potato bugs, pill bugs, and roly-polies all to describe the same bug! Here in the northeast, I think it’s more common for older people to refer to them as roly-polies. I remember in high school we did a science lab involving them, and I’m pretty sure they were potato bugs.
I grew up calling them both roly-polys and potato bugs; occasionally I heard pill bug but it’s not a term I’d use. Grew up in Indiana.
i call them potato bugs, too.
This is one of your cutest posts! Not only do you look beautiful, have a great pair of sunglasses, and are wearing very cool looking earrings, but Karen is absolutely adorable! Plus your dinner looks delicious!!
Hehe love the video! The photos of you with the sunners are great!!
Omg, Karen is too cute! I’d love to have my MIL do that with her Minnesotan accent
Love your UVA photos and I too am jealous of your sunshine. Karen looks fabulous. Hope her treatments go well.
Your self-portraits are absolutely gorgeous! And I love your sunglasses!
Too cute! Love Karen’s accent.
The photos are cool – love the color in them. The first sunglass shot is my fav!
Karen is lovely! What do you call it when you are getting ready to go somewhere? Ya’ll I’m fixin’ to go! Lol
I love how you described the kale as being “massaged” in garlic gold vinaigrette. Wonderful description!
Looks great! Is the greens casserole something you have posted the receipe for? I would love to know what is in it/how to make it! Thanks!
Yeah, we had it just a few nights ago here: http://www.katheats.com/crusty/
Thanks so much – I’m not sure how I missed it!
How fun that you included Karen! I totally think you and Matt have Southern accents, they just sound different than your MIL’s. Almost like different dialects. Maybe that is the northerner in me that hears them
I love that you asked your mother in law to do the accent video! She is so cute! I love southern accents!
I really need to get some garlic gold
I keep wanting too, but don’t want to pay for it..lol
Costs the same as a few glasses of wine or a dinner entree
lol, exactly! That’s why I haven’t bought it yet either.
Hey Kath – that close up of you in the glasses – How did you get that look with your camera? What kind of setting was that on or did you do it in post production?
Post production editing
Spiiiider – love it! Karen is a doll.
Very cute video!! I am inspired to do one on my blog. I haven’t seen anyone else say “buggy” and that’s what I call it too!! And she DEFINITELY doesn’t look old enough to be out of highschool 40 years! (but if it’s vasaline that does the trick, I think my skin would break out like crazy).
What a fun video! I’d love to see more of Karen on your blog–she’s adorable and funny to boot!
Matt AND Karen both have pretty strong accents! At least if you put them in Connecticut…
Oh my lord, Karen is so cute!!
Those pics are awesome, your town seems to have that perfect “Old Southern Town” feel to it!
Such a cute video! It was interesting to hear all of you talk. After reading the blog for so long I just always imagined you talking in the way everyone talks around the midwest. Also, I think all of you have a really deep southern accent. Especially Matt.
ha! yeah, Karen. i’m defintely surprised to hear you had a 40yr reunion. looking good!
So cute, she sounds like my MIL! Gotta love southern women
Random Question Kath, what plug in do you use to reply to comments in your feed? Thanks!
Yes!!! “Y’all” and “buggy” FTW!!! I’m a Georgia girl and I’ve been waiting to see someone say these things “properly”…haha.
His mom is ADORABLE!
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I love your self potraits! Especially that top one. You always look so happy in your photos! And it almost looks like summer in these
What a fun video. Karen is so pretty! My MIL’s accent puts Karen’s to shame (from Mooresville, NC).
Karen is adorable!!!! And so are you and Matt
You should hear my mother in law (a Karen also) but from eastern Kentucky. Oh my!!!!
I like Karen a lot. I can see why you guys spend so much time with her.
OMG- Karen is so cute! I <3 her Southern accent!
Also, your aviator shades pics are super cute!
I looooove this video!!
Your MIL is so cute! Matt’s accent is very strong too!
Awesome pictures of the UVA chapel! I got married there (in September 2007).
In that lasagna recipe, are you supposed to cook the turkey before combining it with the other ingredients?
the meatloaf? the recipe said no. That’s why you bake it.
I’m Texan. I “wrap” houses in toilet paper. Those bugs that roll up are doodle bugs. And that rain/sun thing is the devil beating his wife. There are differences in my coastal Texas accent versus my husband’s central Texas accent.
Karen has the best accent !love it! She is so cute! U can just tell she is the sweetest person ever with a huge heart ; )
Karen you DEF do not look old enough to have just had a 40 year high school year reunion!!!! I need to know your beauty secrets ; ) so I can prepare for the future ; )
Loved this vlog! Thanks to Karen for taking part in it!
p.s. Kath , that pic of you with the stunner shades is beautiful!
OHHHHH! Loved your MIL’s accent !!
She’s so adorable.
I love your MIL and her adorable accent. I just want to hug her! I think both you and Matt have accents, although not as strong as Karen’s.
I agree…more Karen (and her beauty secrets)!! And no way would I guess her old enough to have a 40 year reunion. No way.
Your MIL is just too sweet! I can see why you love spending time with her!
Loved her vlog and I agree, she’s gorgeous – no way she could have gone to a 40th reunion!
Continued good thoughts for her good health and spirits!

I sent an email – thanks Mike!
Wow, how cool! Your cable guy reads your blog?!!?
I have to disagree with Matt’s mom, Matt DOES have a southern accent (speaking as someone from Boston)!
Karen is the cutest thing!
I’m a born & bred Aiken girl. With the exception of Caramel, Theater, Crayon, New Orleans & Pecan your sweet MIL sounds like me. LOL
We say Care-A-Mel, (like theme) The-Ate-Er, Cray-On, New Or-Leans, & Pee-Can.
I’d give the same answers to the questions too except what you call your Grandparents. I had a Granny & Papa & a Nanny & Papa. The one question she couldn’t answer about the rain is “The Devil’s Beatin’ His Wife.”
Now tell me, how do YOU say spider? It’s not a Spiiider? LOL
Ya’ll are making me miss the South! I grew up in Rock Hill, SC but have lived in Los Angeles for 15 years. That accent makes me so nostalgic.
Goodness KAth, Matt and your mom in law KAren are so SWEET!!!!!!! How can you not just eat them UP? Such a cute video. Karen is a peach of a lady and tell her I’m sending her a big hug as she goes through her upcoming treatments. My mom had breast cancer and it’s not fun going through that (or watching somebody you love go through it) but you guys will make it!!
Big hugs my cute friend! (love your sunglasses BTW)
XOXO
Pol
Your mother- in law is SOOOO cute; can I steel her to be my grandma (I have no grandparents!)?
If I said all those words, you’d totally laugh at me for my california accent, hehe.
As a native north carolinian…I think she sounds normal!!
) I love the comment about coming back to the south after living in Denver. I moved to Sweden for a year and had to adjust my accent and pronuciate properly so my English could be understood! When I moved back tongue south, I constantly heard “you talk funny now” and when meeting new people, no one believed I was from the south!
)
hi Kath!
A few months back I got a 3 pound bag of chia seeds and I’m not quite sure how to store them? I’ve been using mason jars like I’ve seen you do, but I was wondering if I should freeze what does not fit in the jar. Also does the jar need to kept cold?
Thank you,
Juli,
I’m not really sure the best way to store them. Maybe try searching around on some of the chia seed sites for recommendations? We just keep ours in the basement away from light when we have extra.
Karen is too cute!! And I love your mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship with her!
Chicago is far from the south and we still say Y’ALL! I’ve lived in Southwest Missouri for 7 years & still get teased by Missourians for it!
ummm, your mother in law is adorable!! you are a very lucky lady
love, love, love your avaitors and those cool green earings! I can tell your ready for spring
What a great picture of you in your avaitors!
Did I miss the post with that delicious greens casserole recipe! Looks wonderful!!!
Yes, linked above! Crusty.
Can we switch mother in laws for one day. Mine is no fun and and she acts older than she really is…. I wish we had the relationship you two do. Enjoy!!!!
Love the AVIATORS. NIIIIICE
I think it’s so funny that Matt thinks he doesn’t have a southern accent. He totally does!!
Karen is SO adorable!! I went to school at Furman so I got to hear a whole boatload of Southern accents there. LOVED it! And there’s still quite a few here in Charlotte
Also, that first pic of you in your sunnies? Ahhh it’s incredible!
Karen is so cute. She definitely does not look like she could have gone to a 40 year high school reunion.
My husband also says “Grandaddy longlegs.” I’d never heard the grand part, always called them daddy long legs. A South Carolina thing, perhaps?
Lurv this!! Karen is just lovely, what a fun spirit!
Karen is adorable!
love the southern accents you guys have, i am from philly and have that thick accent!!
i am dying hearing karen uses vaseline for her skin. my grandmother did the same thing and had the same beautiful creamy skin. i will randomly use it for my skin, my friends all laugh and mock me.
Yea Karen! Love it! I’m glad she said ‘rolling’ the yard, that is what I say too!! Well, I guess because I’m from the South too! It’s been fun hearing everyone doing their accent posts from different places! I think I relate to you guys the most! Have a great night!
I also think that both you and Matt have stronger accents than Karen. I actually think your accent might be the strongest Kath! That was a cute video.
I say “buggy” too when referring to a shopping cart! I felt like I was the only one in Florida who said it, but now I live in SC and every one says it.
Grandaddy long legs? There’s a whole other generation of these things to freak me out?!!
If I had a blog I’d do this just so you could all laugh at my Irish accent. Some of the differences are bonkers, like ‘trolley’ instead of ‘shopping cart’ and ‘coo-pon’ instead if ‘keeeew-pawn’
I’m just getting caught up, but Karen does NOT look like she could possibly attend a 40th reunion yet.
Karen is so adorable. I love her eyes!
Karen is SO precious! I think she is a beauty and does not like she could be ready for a 40th reunion. I think there must be a mistake! Her accent sounds a lot like my mama.
