Come Away With Me

April 16, 2012

Hand or foot!?

That’s a thumb/wrist being iced inside a big warm sock : ) Thumb still hurts. Icing HURTS. But I think it helped – at least temporarily.

It was HOT on the porch this afternoon and I loved it! Sweated in my chair : ) People keep telling me “ohhhh you’re due in August – good luck with that heat” but I’m not worried at all. I don’t plan to do any sports at noon in the high sun, and I’m sure by August we’ll be using our air conditioning, but I just  love warm weather sooooo much I vowed years ago to never complain about heat and I rarely do. Cold and rain on the other hand…

Snacks this afternoon came directly from the package. I wasn’t too hungry and had just a few handfuls before dinner was ready.

Karen brought over the most delicious chicken + mushroom marsala pasta! She used this Giada recipe plus fresh Mona Lisa pasta!

We grilled up a bunch of veggies on the side. Summatime!

This dish was incredible!

The sauce wasn’t too rich and the marsala taste just right! Loved the shrooms and chicken bits.

Veggies were grilled in EVOO, smoked paprika and salt

After something that rich, sometimes you just need to end with something simple..

7 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats April 16, 2012 at 7:38 pm

That dinner looks amazing! And when you talk about being due in the summer I think of Father of the Bride 2 when the mom and daughter were both almost full term and they had the AC on so high everyone else was wearing coats! haha

8 Kelly @ Vegolosophy April 16, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Looked like a yummy dinner!!

9 Caroline @ After Dinner Dance April 16, 2012 at 7:44 pm

I’ve never grilled zucchini lengthwise like that – I’ll have to give it a try!

10 katie @KatieDid April 16, 2012 at 7:49 pm

11 Kerry @ Totes My Oats April 16, 2012 at 7:50 pm

12 Gretchen April 16, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I had an August baby…in TX…be glad you don’t have our scorching summers!! :)

13 Jennifer April 16, 2012 at 7:56 pm

It will be nice to have a summer baby. You have so many cute outfits to use and don’t have to worry about bundling them up so much. What day are you due in August?

Hope your thumb feels better.

14 KathEats April 16, 2012 at 8:20 pm

31 st!

15 jane April 17, 2012 at 9:28 am

that’s my birthday!! A great day to be born if you ask me! :-) I have always LOVED my birthady

16 Kellie April 16, 2012 at 8:10 pm

When you use smoked paprika, do you use the sweet kind or the hot kind? I picked up some sweet smoked paprika and am not sure this is what I thought I was going for… :)

17 KathEats April 16, 2012 at 8:21 pm

I actually don’t know… But I think sweet?

18 Sarah April 16, 2012 at 8:29 pm

what gorgeous photos.

19 Jen April 16, 2012 at 8:37 pm

Looks like a summer meal! Gah, I think I’m going to have to watch Lost soon…

20 Emm April 16, 2012 at 8:43 pm

You know, my carpal tunnel got worse during my first pregnancy (and post-partum with all of the patting, rocking, etc.) It might be worth checking out with a doctor for preventative measures for your hand.

21 Donna April 16, 2012 at 8:43 pm

Did I miss something? What happened to your thumb?

22 KathEats April 16, 2012 at 9:09 pm

It has a tendonitis-like problem (I say like because I don’t know what’s wrong) that comes and goes – I think from too much typing

23 Catalina @ Cake with Love April 16, 2012 at 8:58 pm

I cant believe that you are due in August, thats only a few months away, time flies, I am sure you will be ok, and heat won’t bother you at all! I love all that pile of veggies, looks very delicious and nutritious!

24 marie April 16, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Today in Ontario it was almost 80 F and so humid. Ugh. I really hate the heat and have never been so lucky to have air conditioning which means that you never get relief from the heat. I think it wouldn’t be so bad if during the summer I can at least sleep well, but it’s so hard to face the heat when you were sweating and tossing all night.

25 Katie @ Creature of Habit April 16, 2012 at 9:08 pm

The best cereal snacks come straight from the box! Most days I’d rather eat it by the handful than covered in milk.

26 ~Christy @ wonderofallthings April 16, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Of all things, it’s the popsicle that grabbed my attention. LOVE them, but only during the summer. Sounds like you had the perfect day for it today. What kind do you get? Enjoy your night!

27 KathEats April 16, 2012 at 9:45 pm

Edys whole fruit… mmmm

28 ~Christy @ wonderofallthings April 17, 2012 at 9:45 am

I thought it had to be :) but thought if there was another great brand out there, I needed to know!! Thanks!

29 Natasha April 16, 2012 at 10:05 pm

So silly that people tell you that about delivering in August. People always have something negative to say. I delivered in July in Texas heat and it was my easiest pregnancy and delivery out of 3. The hardest was my October baby who arrived in flu season. Don’t let people scare you. I think summer babies are wonderful!

30 Annette @FitnessPerks April 16, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Ooooh that looks like an awesome dinner! I LOVE popsicles–gotta get some for the hot weather season :)

31 Heidi Bundles Of Hugs April 16, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Wow that dinner looks fab! Recipe?

32 KathEats April 17, 2012 at 6:42 am

I linked to it in the post

33 Lindsay April 16, 2012 at 10:35 pm

That recipe looks oh so scrumptious! And I understand the need for heat. The SUN has finally started beaming down on the city of seoul, the cherry trees are opening up and I LOVE to sweat it out in the sunshine (sunblock applied to my porcelin skin of course!) of our tiny porch. Cheers to great weather and great meals with friends!!

34 Becky April 16, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Love LOST! Are you a Jack or Sawyer fan?

35 KathEats April 17, 2012 at 6:42 am

Jack all the way (he reminds me of Matt at times!) but I went through a big Sawyer phase :)

36 Averie @ Averie Cooks April 16, 2012 at 11:16 pm

those grilled veggies look absolutely PERFECT!!

And your thumb, eeek. Hope it’s back to normal soon!

37 Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats April 16, 2012 at 11:30 pm

Mmmm I need to buy some popsicles..and a grill…and a sweet sweet mother-in-law!

38 Sam April 16, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Hey Kath, I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this to you, but carpal tunnel syndrome and similar ailments are actually pretty common during pregnancy:

If you haven’t had problems with it before despite having been a blogger for years now, I’m willing to bet it will disappear very soon after your little guy is born!

(Also, for future reference, if you find the base of your thumb to be extremely painful a few months after he’s born, google De Quervain’s, or new mom thumb/hand. I got this several months after my son was born and ended up needing a cortisone shot. Fortunately, that totally fixed it.)

39 j3nn April 16, 2012 at 11:41 pm

I’m the exact opposite! I’ll always, ALWAYS complain about it being too hot because I can’t stand it, lol. It was in the 80s here today and longed for the frigid nights just days ago. It’s too soon to be this hot in NY!

40 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More April 17, 2012 at 12:11 am

Popsicle looks good! I should buy some to keep on hand! Definitely probably a better alternative to my craving for ice cream in the heat…

41 Khushboo Thadani April 17, 2012 at 12:28 am

I was a summertime baby and I love much nicer to celebrate your birthday when the weather outside is nice!

42 Morgan April 17, 2012 at 1:37 am

I make this exact recipe for family all the time! Is there mascarpone and Dijon in the sauce?! It’s sooo good!

43 jassy April 17, 2012 at 3:46 am

what’s the red thing sprinkled on the veggies?

i also love warm weather :)

44 KathEats April 17, 2012 at 6:40 am

Smoked paprika!

45 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance April 17, 2012 at 5:25 am

I love that you’re on Instagram now! I get a sneak peak of your yummy dinner before my morning blog reading 😀

46 mary @ minutespermile April 17, 2012 at 5:26 am

I just enjoyed a Giada recipe for lamb ragu over the weekend! She’s got some good stuff up her sleeve.

47 Cait's Plate April 17, 2012 at 5:59 am

Hahah oh my gosh, when I was first scrolling down on that popsicle image I thought it was your finger dipped in sugar. I was like “wow…that certainly is simple!”

48 Hillary April 17, 2012 at 6:00 am

I’m the same way with weather. I hate (and complain so much about) the cold that when it’s really, really hot, I soak it up (and do my best to keep complaining to a minimum!)

49 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles April 17, 2012 at 6:40 am

I just love Giada’s Everyday Italian cookbook! All her recipes are delish! Your chicken dish with roasted veggies looks amazing! Hope the thumb feels better!

50 Molly @ RDexposed April 17, 2012 at 6:45 am

After seeing your gobs of veggies tables on Twitter I used paprika on our vegetables last night-so good!

51 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin April 17, 2012 at 6:47 am

Karen always makes the most delicious looking dinners! I think she needs her own blog. 😉

52 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count April 17, 2012 at 6:50 am

Looks delicious! What did you do to your hand?!

53 Hope @ With A Side Of Hope April 17, 2012 at 7:03 am

That Giada recipe looks so good! I love simple pastas like that :)

54 Angel7 April 17, 2012 at 9:43 am

I just bought popsicles for the first time in a long time either last week or the week before. They are so refreshing!

55 Johanna B April 17, 2012 at 11:26 am

I survived an August pregnancy in New Orleans and I was much older than you at the time. You’ll do fine. I have faith in you.

56 Jeri April 17, 2012 at 3:57 pm

I’m so late, but dinner looks wonderful! Makes it feel like putting on Fresh Prince Summa Summa Summatime! Fresh grilled veggies is a must always in the summer.

And becareful with the thumb/wrist. I have carpal tunnel in both hands and had surgery on both. Cute sock though.

57 jojo April 17, 2012 at 8:38 pm

oh no, I hate injuries… I hope it gets better!
I’ve had my wrists injury from holding the baby in awkward positions too much (also called new moms syndrome, De Quervain syndrome) for 8 months now.. it’s more common than known, be careful!!!

58 April April 20, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Kath, I get a similar issue occassionally with by wrist. I recently started going to a chiropractor that specializes in “active release technique.” My BF and I have seem amazing results with all sorts of back, neck, wrist ailments. You might want to check it out …..
