Cake Walk

March 17, 2012

Our final night! Sad!

It began with cocktail hour at sunset

After fresh showers

Snacks included wheat thins and cheese, plus some munch sesame sticks mom brought from home.

We walked to dinner after some conversation

Karen, your swing misses you!!

Dress loose = nothing to show. Dress tight =

We went to Mojo’s for dinner, which is the former Ebb + Flo’s that we loved for an inexpensive seafood dinner. Sadly, the ownership and therefore the menu has changed and everything is 50% more expensive Sad smile

We tried the sweet potato fries to start

And guess who ate a SALAD for dinner!! I’m feeling much more like my old self! The salad was greens with a few veggies and olives

Larbs and I shared the blackened catfish over grits, so I topped my salad with my portion.

This ended up tasting wonderful!! Loved the good ole Southern grits.

Back at home, we played a family game of Rummikub. Every played this game? It’s one of my very favorites!! We’ve been playing for years and years.

Dad won.

Cake x3 nights in a row. I don’t want to say I’m caked out…but I kind of am. But I’m sure a week from now I’ll be wishing I had a slice! This was one of the best cakes ever [from Carolina Cake Company in Durham]. This plate looks huge, but it was a small desert plate – we made the cake stretch 3 nights perfectly!

All of your pictures remind me of a place I go a lot – Kennebunkport, Maine! Totally different locations but very similar!

Your legs look great! (And so does that cake!!)

Such a wonderful opportunity to be with your family before the baby arrives. You will look back on this trip fondly as a time where you all got to relax and enjoy each other. So fun! Thank you for all the great photos- they were very relaxing to me.

The entire getaway has been fabulous. I know I keep saying it, but this is SUCH a trip down memory lane to my old life when Scott and I used to live there.

And you have me craving the sweet potato fries right about now!

12 Jennifer March 17, 2012 at 11:11 pm

I love rummikub! When I was growing up my grandfather owned a beach house and we would always play when we went to the beach. It was the first game my husband and I bought as a married couple.

13 KhushbOo March 17, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Caked out?? Unheard of!

14 Kristin March 17, 2012 at 11:30 pm

The blackened catfish looks pretty amazing!!!

18 Antonia @ healthinspirations March 18, 2012 at 4:05 am

My whole family loves rummikub. We bring it on all our family vacations!!! I wish I could have cake 3x in a row, but with 3 siblings, birthday cakes never survive for that long 😉

19 jenny March 18, 2012 at 4:35 am

you look radiant!

20 Christina March 18, 2012 at 6:23 am

Your dinner looks awesome!

26 Jennifer March 18, 2012 at 7:23 am

I love your dress! That is so pretty and it fits you two perfectly. :)

I have never been to Bald Head Island or any of the beaches in NC but that is one of my wishes to vacation.

Ooooh….I LOVE Rummikub! My family used to play that when I was growing up. So much fun!!:)

27 KathEats March 18, 2012 at 8:28 am

“You two” – haha! Made my day!

28 Lydia March 18, 2012 at 7:32 am

Hi Kath,
Thanks for the great memory of Rummikub! We used to play at my grandparents’ house all the time. I recently lost my grandmom and my grandpa died a long time ago, so it was nice to remember those happy times spent around their dining room table playing this game. I’ll have to introduce it to my children….

Looks like a wonderful time with your family!
Lydia :)

29 KathEats March 18, 2012 at 8:28 am

Sweet. I used to play with my Grandma Younger who passed away as well

30 Pat March 18, 2012 at 12:17 pm

I love Rummikub – my husband and I play sometimes in the evening, but I play online nearly every day!

31 Kristen @ Change of Pace March 18, 2012 at 7:32 am

You are going to be adorable with a big belly! Dinner looks amazing and fresh. :)

32 Life's a Bowl March 18, 2012 at 7:59 am

Beautiful scenery pictures and your dress is adorable! I’ve never tried grits but people always say they’re really “gritty” [no pun intended] 😛

33 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count March 18, 2012 at 9:00 am

Sounds like you’ve had a great time!

34 Björg March 18, 2012 at 9:27 am

There is never too much cake :)

It’s a 3 day birthday right? 😉

35 Beth March 18, 2012 at 11:25 am

37 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More March 18, 2012 at 11:55 am

I don’t think I ever played before. I grew up playing Dominoes. And in fact my family still does sometimes…it’s just gotten harder to play with the grandparents. :-/

38 Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie March 19, 2012 at 3:49 pm

I am dying of grits cravings now! :)

39 Sam March 20, 2012 at 1:59 pm

I’ve been going to Bald Head since I was 3, and I had no idea they were closing Ebb and Flo’s! Such a bummer.

Do you guys go to Shoals Club while you’re down there? I love it, but it’s so expensive!

40 KathEats March 20, 2012 at 3:25 pm

The Shoals was still closed for the winter :(
