Boy is it gorgeous here! But also a bit chilly. Not the 80* I left in the mountains with the marsh breezes.
We found Larbs on an earlier ferry and in time for dinner!
Birthday girl
Note that this was before I ate dinner : )
We went to the Bald Head Island Club for dinner and ate in the bar
Round of cocktails – cran soda for me
For dinner I had the Shrimp Quesadillas, which have been on my mind since Larbs blogged about them a month ago.
They were everything and more! I distributed one around the table and ate the other three, along with some of mom’s salad for some greens
One of the reasons we went to the grill though was because it was all-you-can-eat pasta night. Dad too full advantage of the offer and had two huuuuge bowls!
But the party really began when we returned to our room for mom’s buttercream dream
Unfortunately, NC was so hot today that the buttercream melted off in the car during our ride!!! The first question Larbs and I asked was “well is it still there or a sugar puddle!?” When dad said it was still ther e- just on the bottom – we knew things would be OK.
Cause we girls just love vanilla.
We all agreed this cake was wedding cake quality, which is the top prize to be awarded!
Now in pajamas, we’re excited to get cozy in bed.
Sweet dreams!

I love that first picture; it looks so beautiful there. I can practically feel a refreshing breeze from here
That’s too bad the frosting melted off the cake, but at least it still tasted great – that’s the only thing that really matters!
Bald head is gorgeous! We go every year. Melted off frosting wouldn’t bother me at all haha! I’d eat it for sure
Aww poor cake! Bet it was still just as good though!
oh man. i could have easily eaten ALL of that frosting by myself. YUM!!!
oh my gosh, that’s the best kind of cake ever. I would have just eaten all that fallen icing! And your shrimp quesadilla looks amazing, I would have thought about it for ages too!
weather is beautiful everywhere! And that cake? Well it just looks delicious!
I love that you’re there right now! Our (first and only so far) trip to BHI was in Sept. 2010 when I was 9 weeks pregnant. We’ve both been there when we were early in our pregnancies!
My bump was about the same as yours and I remember standing on the shore there in my swim suit with my tubby little tummy poking out. It’s a good memory.
One night, we drew two hearts in the sand and put our favorite boy name in one and our favorite girl name in the there and took pictures of each. Later, when we found out we were having a boy, I had a print made of the boy name heart picture and put it in a frame on the nursery wall. He’s almost 11 months old now and it’s still there and it always makes me think of that trip. <3
One tip – if you remember, I wrote to you when I got back because the water was really smelly and I had done some reading online about the safety of the water down there. I said I had bought my drinking water that week because I wasn't comfortable drinking from the tap. If you find the same to be true and the water seems questionable, you may want to buy your drinking water just to be on the safe side.
Have fun and congrats again!!
Such sweet memories!
Today is my Dad’s birthday, too! Happy birthday to your mama.
Also, I craved buttercream during the last few weeks of my pregnancy. Weird.
What’s bad cake then….graduation cake?
Hmmm. Anything with Crisco icing (not just because of nutrition, but I hate the taste!) Or anything too dry. Or anything that skimps on icing in general!
Aww, Happy Birthday to your mom!
Fun dinner! Quesadillas are always a good choice! Glad you were able to salvage some of the cake!
Man that reminded me of our wedding cake the first anniversary!! The Mr took it out of the freezer and put a bowl over it and 3 hours later the icing was on the plate and when he “redecorated” it, it looked like it had already been eaten if ya get my drift but still good! Good to know another vanilla on vanilla girl!
oh my goodness, your whole evening is full of some of my favorite eats! those shrimp quesadillas sound incredible and i absolutely love buttercream frosting. i’d be in heaven if i were you, as i’m sure you were too!
adorable! i think the cake looks even more enticing with that big ol’ mess of buttercream around the bottom. definitely where my fork would have gone.
wedding cake quality?! oh my! in my opinion, the cake does NOT have to look pretty to taste good. glad the melted frosting didn’t ruin it
those quesadillas look divine.
Oh MAN! Can i have some cake?
what a fun dinner!!! those quesadillas do sound delicious!!
happy birthday to your Mom!
“Long time reader, first time comment” is absolutely true here. Got into a conversation with my roommate tonight about our favorite blogs – mentioned yours and realized that you had no clue!
Thought I’d share. Thanks for being a part of my daily reading. I thoroughly enjoy KERF and wanted to make sure you knew!

Hey Twinkle, send me an email if this is for a project please
My #1 reason is because I love to analyze something that’s so necessary in everyone’s life and how it interactions with what we do and how we feel.
Shrimp quesadillas would really hit the spot right now! I don’t think I should be reading food blogs when I’m hungry anymore…=)
I’ve eaten MANY sweaty post annual 5k & 10k Bald Head race meal inside the Bald Head Island Club! Along with a few drinks and golf cart rides around the island.
So happy you made it down there and this post is like living vicariously for me, and puts me back circa early 2000′s when Scott and I used to live in the Carolinas. And we always almost missed the ferry every time we’d ever try to go to Bald Head
bald head camping is super awesome too
Happy Birthday to your mum! What a cute melted cake! I’m glad you all enjoyed it anyways!
Oh no! I’ve had that happen, the icing/whip cream melting off the cake. It was horrible because it happened once when I was delivering a wedding cake… Good thing me and my co-worker brought fix-up kit for emergency
Love Larbs’ sunglasses – they are awesome, where’d she get them from?
Happy birthday to your mom. This trip looks like such a fun way to celebrate. Especially that cake!
Happy birthday to your mom! And, like you guys, I would just eat the frosting with a fork. It’s the best part anyway!
Happy Birthday Mama KERF!
That cake looks delicious and it looks like you guys had a fantastic time. The weather here has been gorgeous as well, I just hope it stays this way!
The cake looks yummy! At least there was a thick layer of icing on it

I would say that you verifiably have a baby bump! Sounds like you had an enjoyable time.
