Today’s breads have been so tasty!
I learned to make challah – quadruple braid! [Note the green earring!] I’m getting so much more familiar with working with dough. It’s really, really fun! I LOVE the way soft dough feels in my hands.
Green cookies!
Ruben roll bread – stuffed with all the ruben toppings! I didn’t get to taste it because it FLEW out the door!
It’s very festive here today!
I started out the day with some coffee. My shoulders have been killing me lately. I think it’s time for a caffeine intervention. Actually, I think my cutting back these last few weeks are to blame. Caffeine withdrawal always manifests itself in my shoulders. I woke up with a horrible ache this morning and took two Advil (!), which helped.
I had a taste of scone when I got here as well
And a few dough nibbles
Then I had official breakfast around 9AM (I can’t believe it took me that long to get hungry! Who am I!? Those nibbles last a while)
And a [mealy] apple and PB&J on High Five!
And a taste of the Cinnamon Swirl fresh, steaming, hot outta the oven.
We’re working through lunchtime, then taking a break and coming back to the bakery to close and then go over all the bookkeeping over pizza this evening.
Have a green day!

Whoo, I just love bread and I am getting so hungry lokking at those pictures:)!
That reuben roll bread looks interesting. We’ll be celebrating St. Paddy’s Day with our signature vegetarian reuben sandwiches tonight. Yum
The reuben roll looks awesome. I’ve never seen such a thing and I’d love to try it. I’m assuming it’s a one day of the year bread?
Quadruple braid? Awesome! I make challah at home (triple braid) and it’s our favorite!!! So stinking good.
That Reuben roll looks amazing! I need to make it to the Great Harvest near my work. Have a great St. Patty’s Day!
challah = the BEST bread everrrrrrrrr
I don’t even like ruebens but that rueben bread looks incredible!
All that bread is making me SOOOO hungry! Especially that Ruben one…. I bet it tasted phenomenal. Have a great St Patty’s Day Kath!

Happy St. Patricks Day!! Love the green earring touch!
Wow the rueben filled bread looks good, even though I dont like that kind of stuff, it looks amazing!
YUM. I would like a whole loaf of cinnamon swirl and a green cookie please.
I’m super impressed with the quadruple braid! Three strands is almost too much for me sometimes
Bites of fresh bread sound like quite a delicious breakfast. Kind of makes me want to own a bakery too, just to have them! Happy St. Patty’s day!!

I’m not a huuuuuge bread fan, but challah is amazing!
Ruben roll bread?! omg, my husband would LOVE that!
I’m getting a carb coma just looking at your photos! Get me some bread stat! Have a great day, Kath. Learn soak it all in
Haha, love the green earring!
I wish I knew how to make challah bread! It goes SO FAST in this house, and we have to hide it because the dogs go CRAZY over it! They get more excited over bread than regular treats!
All that bread looks amazing!!
I need to check out my GH near me!
All that bread making looks like so much fun!!
YUM I love bread. Carbs are my friend.
I plan to ingest green beer later…but that’s about it
Ugh, I hate mealy apples. The bread looks amazing though! Have a great day Kath!
Looks really yummy
Wow, I rarely miss bread (gluten-intolerant gal here) but I bet I would miss it more if there was a Great Harvest right near me. I discovered your blog and learned about Great Harvest just when I was doing gluten reintroductions for my elimination diet, and I remember looking up Great Harvest – there’s one in Alexandria, so not far from WDC, but now right so close as to tempt me all the time LOL
Forgive me for asking a blunt question, but do you guys wear hair nets when baking?
We wear hats – which is what the health department requires.
Interesting how regulations differ from place to place!
Pretty sure in Canada, or at least in Ontario, you have to wear a hair net to even serve food!
It’s probably just a hat but lots of people do wear nets
Mmm all those baked goods look amazing! What a fun time/day to work in a bakery. So festive!
I couldn’t control myself around all that bread! Just bits and nibbles? Not for me! I’d be devouring whole loaves by myself!
That rueben roll looks amazing! Sorry you didn’t get a chance to try it. Wow!
I love how festive the GH employees are — I bet you are having a blast!
I love the way that dough feels in my hands too! So when you open the bakery, are you actually going to be making some of the dough yourself?
Probably not that much. I’m more on the customer side, but I’m sure I’ll jump on the kneading table from time to time
Start the day with bread, end with pizza. My kind of day!!!!
Once again, that bread looks so delicious! My dad used to help run a Polish Bakery here in Chicago, these pics remind me of when he used to bring all kinds of goodies home.
Looking at your photos I am so excited for you, it’s so amazing to be fulfilling on your goal.
Happy St. Patricks day! .. Im celebrating with a green monster .. I totally want a green cookie!
I finally went to Great Harvest yesterday! It was like being in bread heaven…ha
I sampled a few breads, but decided to go with Dakota… I love breads that have lots of little tidbits in them.
Looks like you’re having a fun St. Patty’s day already!
it’s st. patty’s day?!? i’m so out of it!!! have a great one!
Oh my gosh, that reuben roll bread looks fantastic!!!! I also am showing my (non)Irish pride through my earrings! lol Believe it or not, I have no green clothing.
Looks like a blast! Happy St patricks day!
Those giant cookies are the coolest! It looks like you’re having fun!
Ruben roll bread looks so so good, oh I love Great Harvest! I really hope they have that bread at the GH here! If they don’t I just might have to try and make some.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day
That cinnamon bread in the last picture looks soooo good. Hot bread right out of the oven is the best thing EVER.
It’s so cool that you are learning how to make all types of breads! Enjoy the rest of your day, and the pizza you get to have this evening
“Ruben roll bread – stuffed with all the ruben toppings!” – sounds like heaven in roll form!
That all looks SO delicious! I’m seriously considering a long weekend trip to C’ville soon but want to wait until you guys open
By the way it’s ibuprofen, but it tickles me how many people say IB profen and the like.
Thank you! I cringe when I see IB profin.
I used to write ibuproten and feel like I got corrected!? I never know. I pronounced it “IB profin”
Noooo, correct your corrector! It’s definitely ibuprofen and it’s pronounced eye-byoo-pro-fen. In any event, I hope your shoulders are feeling better
Fresh cinnamon swirl!!! I used to eat that by the loaf!
I plan to stop into the bakery this weekend…you made me want to buy lots & lots of bread!
It’s still funny to me and so small world that I know the bakery owner’s family.
That Reuben Roll looks amazing! I must find the recipe. Reading about all of your bread adventures makes me want to whip out my new bread stone and get bakin’! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!
I love working with dough–knead it, punching it down–it is just so much fun!
Mealy apples are always a let-down though!
Yum! I keep salivating just watching you work in that b akery!!
I LOVE the challah from GH! It seriously is my favorite bread from GH! Perfection! Everything looks just so tasty! Love the green cookies!
Those look incredible. I’m hungry for bread now.
AHH this makes me want to work in a bakery! So many wonderful smells, foods, and people around!
You are in Bread Heaven. Imagine — this will be your everyday life, with a Kath twist, very soon!
hey kath,
random question: since i saw you making challah, i was wondering whether any of the great harvest bakeries were kosher? (the bakery would have to be under rabbinical supervision)…
i’m guessing not, since the next photo was ruben bread –
anyhow, it would be a big commitment for a bakery to undertake, but really wonderful for customers if the GH was in an area where this would be profitable (ie. have a kosher-seeking clientele)…
It’s not a kosher bakery – I think that would be really hard to do with all the diverse breads
all of that looks absolutely amazing!!!!
At first I was going to ask where your festive greenery is, but upon second look I found it sparingly in your earrings. The breads look as tasty as always! I WANT SOME!!
Ohhhhh I love bread so much. All of this looks SO GOOD.
You are killing me with all those beautiful bread photos! My keyboard can’t take the drool anymore.
Your shirt is adorable! And how yummy does everything look! I want a green cookie
Gosh, I just love bread.
I am sure I could fine this on my own but.. are there any Great Harvest in Pennsylvania? I’ve never heard of it before.. only from you!
oh my gosh! i would be the BEST fiance in the world tonight if i could find that reuben roll bread! my fiance would be in heaven!
Super jealous of your earrings and that sandwich! I should also note your awesome braiding skills on the challah. Looks like a fun day.
Mmmmm….total carb overload….looks delicious and like so much fun!
Cinnamon swirl…I <3 thee.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!! Love the green cookies. I tried making green cookies today with pistachio mix..but they had more of a green tint rather than an actual green color. Still good, though!
your post makes me want to hunt down a great harvest store asap!!!
Happy St. Patty’s Day!
All of these photos are gorgeous! It makes me want to go and get some bakes goods. Luckily here in New Zealand, there are lots of great bakeries! But I bet it’s nothing compared to your stuff….YUM!
Mmmm, all that bread looks so good. I love bread!
I love Challah! It makes the best French toast because it’s so airy and doughy and just soaks up all the batter!
Everything looks delicious. Those cookies looker even bigger then the normal big cookies.
Holy YUM.
Wow, that bread looks so amazing! If only we could taste it through the screen…
Green pizza. Super fun times indeed!
That bread looks AWESOME. Now I’m craving a nice, big carby sandwich
Happy St. Patty’s Day!!! I am ever so jealous of that delicious looking sandwich!
My husband saw your reuben roll up and wants to know if you will have that at your store when he comes to visit next month?
Hey Kim,
We probably won’t be open in April – so sorry! We’re shooting for May. Also, the Reuben roll is a St. Patty’s Day special, so we won’t have it until next March. Hope your husband will come by for some of our others – or at least just to say hi!
The earring is super cute – but be careful wearing an earring while prepping food. If it fell off, it could be an unpleasant challenge to find it (hopefully not in the beautiful Reuben loaf!). I love reading about your GH adventures. Thanks for sharing!
Reuben roll bread?! Sign me up.
Yummy! We used to have a Great Harvest where I live and I loved getting a loaf of the Garlic Cheese bread after school, and my friends and I would just munch on it while doing homework…good times!
Hey Kath,
It was nice getting to work with you and Matt, especially on St. Patricks day . I have a feeling that you both have the good , positive energy to run your store. We wish you much luck and many Happy Challah Days to come.
Thanks Stefani!
