Breakfast in a jar.

Since I didn’t have any vegetables for dinner last night, I tied some into breakfast.

[Really, I just like kale in smoothies!]

When I was training for my half marathon last year, the only food I could stomach after a long run was a kale smoothie. I have no idea why, but they were so good. It’s been a while since I’ve had one – but I had some already-cleaned kale in my fridge ready to go.

Smoothie ingredients included:

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 big handful kale
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup yogurt
  • 1 big banana
  • 3 ice cubes
  • 1/3 cup frozen berries
  • Toppings: Peanut Butter Hungry Bar, coconut, chia, Chia Charger

Kale smoothies are best with a hint of cocoa powder, but I forgot it!

Candy Cane tea + frothed milk!

LOVED reading all of your book suggestions! And I was able to squeeze in a whole hour of Hunger Games last night. Even Matt complimented my lengthy reading hour. Book is getting good!

Have a wonderful Friday!!

I love breakfast in a jar! Such a colorful breakfast. I love that placemat. So pretty. :) Happy Friday!

I almost never make a smoothie that isn’t green – it’s such an easy way to get extra greens in. My non-smoothie drinking friends don’t believe me but you really don’t taste a difference with spinach!

3 Cait's Plate December 9, 2011 at 9:26 am

I LOVE that last photo!!

I need to try a kale smoothie – I love the vibrant green color!

4 Dee December 9, 2011 at 9:26 am

Mmmmm! I’m not brave enough to put kale in a smoothie, so spinach all the way for me!

5 Lauren @ What Lauren Likes December 9, 2011 at 9:28 am

Sounds like a great breakfast! So colourful :)

6 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio December 9, 2011 at 9:37 am

I’d never think to add kale to a smoothie. I’m going to have to trust you on this one

7 Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot December 9, 2011 at 9:39 am

I’ve been meaning to try a kale smoothie but I’m nervous for some reason… I’ll have to just be brave and try it!

8 Jen December 9, 2011 at 9:41 am

Do you like spinach in smoothies or just Kale?

I stayed up WAY too late reading Book 2 of the Games. I need to finish this series already – I’m exhausted :)

10 Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl December 9, 2011 at 9:47 am

A Kale smoothie. I would think it would have an edgy taste but maybe the banana calms the taste? On any account, it looks really good! Enjoy your day!

11 Rebecca @ Naturally Healthy and Gorgeous December 9, 2011 at 9:52 am

I get so much kale from my CSA, I will have to try a smoothie!

12 Lena @Fit on the Rocks December 9, 2011 at 9:54 am

Do you find the taste of kale to be overpowering in a smoothie? I’ve always made smoothies with spinach but have been afraid to try kale.

13 Kathleen December 9, 2011 at 9:54 am

Kale is very difficult to get here… Can’t wait to be in the US to try some of the products you seems to enjoy! Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, here I come ;)

I made your Pumpkin spice Buckwheat bake’s recipe yesterday and it was so yummy! I’ll do it again for sure!

Have a nice week-end! Snow is everywhere now and sun is out.. perfect weather for winter runs :)

14 Lynn @ the actor's diet December 9, 2011 at 9:56 am

I’ve never had kale in smoothies before. But I do like spinach!

15 katie @KatieDid December 9, 2011 at 9:57 am

love the wood background for the photos lately! Is it part of the new porch or just something you picked up for taking photos?

16 KathEats December 9, 2011 at 5:16 pm

It’s some re-claimed wood our contractor gave us

17 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries December 9, 2011 at 10:00 am

you make all your food look so delicious and appetizing – even when it is a green smoothie! :) i’ve never tried kale in a smoothie before… something new i’ll have to try out!

18 Khushboo December 9, 2011 at 10:03 am

Maybe I added too much spinach but green monster is not something I enjoy at all!

19 Angel7 December 9, 2011 at 10:04 am

A kale smoothie… Would have never thought to put that in a smoothie! I will have to try it sometime, because I <3 kale!!!

20 ilovefetacheese December 9, 2011 at 10:07 am

This looks yummy but I feel like it might be difficult to eat out of the jar with the toppings! Do you mix it all in or just sip? SO MANY OPTIONS *OVERLOAD* lol

21 Christine @ BookishlyB December 9, 2011 at 10:07 am

Any plans to run another long one? I checked out your link- you and Matt both ran it really fast!

22 KathEats December 9, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Not in the near future. I think my running-for-hobby days are over. I just enjoy it for the euphoria now in 4-6 mile increments

23 Summer @ Well-rounded Hippie December 9, 2011 at 10:08 am

While I love hearing what you put IN your smoothies, I would also be interested in HOW you make them, what you use, etc.

24 Joanne December 9, 2011 at 10:19 am

That smoothie looks so good but I eat so many greens (kale, spinach etc) and like to chew them.
If I were to add them to a shake, I’ve def. over green myself, suffer from fiber overload and never be able to run more than a mile away from the nearest facilites. Guess there is ONE draw back from enjoying too many greens :)

25 Adrianne Franco December 9, 2011 at 10:21 am

Honestly, I still haven’t tried this, but trust me on this one, before the year ends, I will have a feedback on how it worked for me. :)

26 Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile December 9, 2011 at 10:26 am

I always put spinach in smoothies, but never tried Kale. Something to look into! I have heard such great things about the Hunger Games. I think I’m going to pick up a book today.

27 Cat @Breakfast to Bed December 9, 2011 at 10:27 am

have they gotten to the cornucopia yet?????

moving on. I like spinach or watercress, but not kale smoothies, something about the kale. Have you tried watercress? so nice!

28 KathEats December 9, 2011 at 5:16 pm

29 Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy December 9, 2011 at 10:28 am

Love mason jars! I wish it wasn’t so cold in Minnesota, because I have been craving a smoothie. I just cannot bring myself to drink something cold in the AM when the house is already so cold!

30 kathleen @ the daily crumb December 9, 2011 at 10:33 am

i put kale and/or spinach in almost all of my smoothies to sneak in veggies, but the color always looks so unappetizing!! yours look so pretty :)

31 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat December 9, 2011 at 10:40 am

I love kale in my smoothies – definitely tastes a little “greener” than spinach, but still very tasty – and nutritious to boot! :)

32 faith December 9, 2011 at 10:46 am

I snacked on carrots, broccoli, and green beans when I got home. That brie was damn good but I needed a little green.

33 Susan H. @ the food allergy chronicles December 9, 2011 at 10:46 am

Love the colour combination today for your breakfast…love how your smoothie and mug match! The little rosettes are so dainty!

We finally have snow In Southern Ontario! Beautiful run today in the softly falling snow! Spied a boy running out of his house in pure delight at the sight of the freshely fallen gift of snow…he dropped to the ground to build his first snowball of the season…priceless!

34 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga December 9, 2011 at 11:05 am

Love the pink napkin/cloth and the green mug…so delicate and pretty.

I’m more of a fan of cocoa powder in my smoothies (I don’t tend to forget it..haha) I would have been right there reminding you!

35 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen December 9, 2011 at 11:09 am

I hope you have #2 ready for when you finish Hunger Games b/c you’re gonna want it right away!

36 KathEats December 9, 2011 at 6:22 pm

I have 2 and 3 waiting!

37 Bree December 9, 2011 at 11:35 am

How do you get your kale to blend so well? Mine stays chunky, it’s probably just my blender though. I’ve found I have to use spinach with that blender if I want it to work. What type of blender do you use?

38 kaila @ healthyhelper December 9, 2011 at 11:41 am

I love your spoon! Its an ice tea spoon right?

39 Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon December 9, 2011 at 11:46 am

The one and only time I made a kale smoothie, I didn’t destem the kale before throwing it in the blender(rookie mistake) and it did NOT taste very good! Since then, I’ve stuck with spinach. But perhaps I should give kale another try….

40 Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach December 9, 2011 at 11:46 am

I love sneaking kale, cucumbers, carrots, and even celery into smoothies! And to all you kale in smoothie skeptics out there… TRY IT! Start with just 1 or 2 leaves. It’s good and much better for you than spinach!!

41 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife December 9, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Such a pretty b-fast!

42 Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco December 9, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Thank goodness I just bought a big bunch a kale! Off to make one soon!

43 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count December 9, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Great idea for breakfast in a jar! I can’t seem to find kale anywhere. I have to do a wider search I guess.

44 Lizzie @TheWeekdayVegan December 9, 2011 at 12:12 pm

I was really hoping BIAJ stood for beer in a jar, and that you drank beer for breakfast. Carbo-loading!

45 Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine December 9, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I’ve never tried a kale smoothie. It’s on my list! :)

46 donna December 9, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I love kale, but I could never drink anything that is that color green! It looks like smooshed peas! Yuck!

47 Heather H December 9, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Yum – candy cane tea. Hope good does that sound! I like spinach in smoothies, I haven’t tried kale!

48 Candice @ Sailing on Paper December 9, 2011 at 12:29 pm

After finishing the first Hunger Games book, it’s impossible not to read the next two! You’ll definitely finish in time for the movie this spring. So excited!

49 Katie December 9, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Definitely check out the Linwoods products if you get the chance. The one has ground flax, cocoa, blueberries and strawberries. They are definitely great to add into yogurt and smoothies. I always feel guilty if I don’t have veggies with dinner, but your “dinner” last night looked delicious and definitely worth skipping the veggies. Wine and chocolate are superfoods right?

50 Amanda December 9, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I haven’t tried kale in a smoothie yet, but I love spinach! I juiced kale one time and it was so bitter. Do you remove the stems before you add it to your smoothies?

51 Jes @ Becoming Less of Jes December 9, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I want a spoon like that! =)

52 Nicole December 9, 2011 at 2:08 pm

I LOVE the Hunger Games trilogy! I read the books a few months ago and breezed right through all three because they are so good.

53 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats December 9, 2011 at 2:09 pm

I love spinach and kale in my smoothies! Such an easy way to add in veggies!

54 Ellie@fitforthesoul December 9, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Yummy~! I actually like the taste of kale in smoothies too! It also makes it hearty and thick, which=delicious.

55 Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] December 9, 2011 at 2:25 pm

I’m going to try a kale smoothie. Kale is a great anti-inflammatory.

56 Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles December 9, 2011 at 3:47 pm

My breakfast is eaten out of a jar every morning I have to commute & eat breakfast in the car…fits much better in the cup holder than a bowl, haha!

57 KathEats December 9, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Some notes on smoothies!!!

-Spinach you can’t taste, kale you can. It’s a bit earthy. It’s not overpowering, but somewhat detectable
-I don’t use the stems
-I have a Vita-mix blender that I got from the company to review. If it broke, I would spend $400 on a new one. LOVE it. It blends the kale completely.
-I mixed the toppings into this smoothie and it was so fun to find a lump of nut butter on the bottom :)
-Yup, that’s an iced tea spoon! I always eat breakfast with them. Love the leverage!

58 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 9, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Brr even just looking at that smoothie makes me feel cold!
