Barney Butter Hat

August 27, 2009

I’m here, I’m here!

I woke up happy and peaceful at 7 and found myself reasoning to do the inverse of the inverse workout – go to the gym first!

I really didn’t want to go, but all of a sudden I was biking away and that was that.

I had this happy little banana with a Barney Butter hat before I left!

The gym was the usual: bike, elliptical, some stat bike to finish my Better Homes + Gardens, a bit of upper body lifting, bike.

I came home and weighed the breakfast options. We have minimal fruit, I wanted something faster than oats, we had an opened Chobani from dinner last night, so I made a SIAB.

IMG_1425 (480x640)

IMG_1422 (640x480)

Ingredients:

  • 1 heaping tbsp Navitas Naturals chia seeds soaked in 1/2 a cup 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup Chobani
  • 3/4 banana
  • Handful ice
  • Heaping tbsp PB2

Toppings:

I really like PB2 in smoothies – it gives the essence of PB without being so calorically dense

Fabulosity

Wasn’t in the mood for coffee today and I hope my shoulders don’t regret that later :(

Off to work on Real Food Consultations, then get all of my assignments in my Google Calendar, then get to school work, then class!

The smoothie in a bowl is something I have to try when I don’t need to take my smoothie with me!
Did you ever try that Peruvian coffee?

I think I may need to try the Smoothie in a Bowl soon – my problem is that liquid calories like smoothies don’t usually keep me full. But I guess if I add toppings it will!

I’ve yet to try the SIAB, but I do love me a smoothie with some granola on top! I have a feeling this would be one of those that I would have for breakfast once and then would make day after day after day.

I like the idea of putting PB2 in smoothies. The flavor to calorie ration with normal peanut butter just doesn’t do it for me in a smoothie. Is PB2 different than peanut flour?

Hmmm I am very intrigued by chia seeds. I have been using SF pudding mix for a while to thicken smoothie’s but it’s such a processed product!

Do chia seeds help thicken everything out? How long did you soak them?

Man I wish I was organized! I need to get my act together one of these days.

Do you ever drink green tea to combat the caffiene headaches? On my diet plan I can’t have coffee (not sure why but oh well) but I can have green tea. No jolt of energy, but no headaches either!

I need to get me some of this PB2. I am curious, I haven’t looked at it recently, but does it have good protein in it or was that lost on the powder?

Mara,
It’s in my freezer waiting to be opened!! I’m trying to use up some of my others first, but I”m excited!

Runeatrepeat ,
I’ve never been to South Africa – I got it at Homegoods!

Eve ,
I think chewing through toppings does the trick!

Hil ,
I don’t know, but I’d imagine they are similar.

Therese ,
They definitely do thicken. Just put them in liquid for 10 minutes or so.

Hallie ,
I do drink tea sometimes and it helps, but I need to just cut back on the coffee portion again. Or just drink it everyday.

Jessica ,
I think it has slightly less protein, but still 4 grams per 2 tbsp.

Hi Kath
I see you used PB2, I always struggle with how to measure it since it packs so well. How much do you put in your smoothies? Do you measure flat dry tbsp or wet?
Thanks!

Reply

42 Kath August 27, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Shawna ,
I just dumped in two heaping spoonfuls of my normal spoons, but if I were to measure I would do a level tbsp “packed” by leveling it on the side of the jar.

I once heard someone say “I never regret going to the gym, but I always regret not going.” It usually gets motivated when I don’t want to work out.

I’m totally the same way with PB2 vs PB in smoothies. I feel that the PB flavor gets lost in smoothies/shakes so you have to add TONS (aka TONS of calories!). PB2 blends in so well and flavors it nicely!!

Kudos for coining the name SIAB!! You beat me to it fair and square :-D I’ve been eating them for years but never thought of the initials- brilliant!

I put mine into the freezer as I get ready in the AM, then stir them up, granita-style, with a fork every 15-20 min. They do get a little more icy, but thicker too (=not as runny).

Have you not yet bought Xanthan and Guar gums? They’ll change your life. There’s some trial and error and many smoothies will go down the sink until you learn the right proportions, but when you hit the sweet spot….heaven!! :-)

51 Kath August 28, 2009 at 8:45 am

Deb ,
I haven’t tried the gums. I kinda feel like they’re a bit too much trouble, but I bet they do give a great texture.

Kath- if you decide to break down and buy the gums, I wrote a little (read: huge) post on smoothies- and a section on the gums. Might help. Enjoy! :-)
