Back Where I Come From

October 8, 2011

^^ Circa 2001!

We had a great time at the reunion – it was so fitting for Orange High. Back in the day we had parties in fields with bonfires, stables on our campus and a lot of country roads to roam. Times have not really changed!

IMG_8492 (400x600)

We had a party in a field, at a barn, near stables and down a long country road. A hotel ballroom would not have been suitable.

IMG_8528 (600x400) IMG_8507 (600x400)

IMG_8482 (400x600)

Huge thanks to Ms. Devon Isaacs [original last name!] for coordinating the event!! Devon and I were great nerd friends together. Apparently I taught her to run and we played hangman and yahtzee together. And I remember doing thousands of back walkovers on her front lawn!

IMG_8478 (400x600)

I was also thrilled to be able to spend the afternoon with my wonderful friend Becca and her two beautiful girls!!

IMG_8484 (400x600)

IMG_8502 (600x400)  IMG_8506 (400x600)

Most likely to succeed!

IMG_8487 (600x398)

Tiffany is also a good friend from high school and an avid KERF reader – we had fun discussing blogging in a "I knew you when you were little" context : )

IMG_8494 (600x400)

Lots of kids in attendance!

IMG_8491 (600x400)

There was a buffet of BBQ and sides, but since we’d just had lunch and weren’t ready for dinner, I just snacked on a hushpuppy – mmm cornmeal!

IMG_8509 (400x600)

IMG_8510 (600x400)

Also ate an apple I brought from home

IMG_8513 (600x400)

Matt was a great sport!

IMG_8496 (400x600)

Lydia showed up fashionably late after work and we didn’t get enough time to catch up! I got to hang with Kirst all afternoon and evening! Kirst and I go back to church nursery together.

IMG_8514 (600x400)

I got to speak to almost everyone (it’s amazing how well names came back!) but out of our class of 300 wish more people had come!! [And we missed you Matt Compton!]

IMG_8526 (600x400)

As the sun set, Matt, Kirst and I headed back to town for dinner. We went to Gulf Rim, which is an amazing funky restaurant with a gulf coast them.

IMG_8546 (400x600)

Gulf Rim has been a number of restaurants throughout the years, but it was Lu-e-G’s for most of my childhood – tuna pitas and $1 bagels and cream cheese!! Going in there still reminds me of that vibe.

IMG_8532 (600x400)

I tried Abita’s Andygator, which was a malty doppelbock that I loved.

IMG_8531 (400x600)

I could not resist an order of fried plantains – LOVEEEEE these!

IMG_8535 (600x400)

For dinner I had the Salmon and Spinach Enchiladas that came with an amazing cinnamon slaw and a side of black beans. THIS MEAL WAS SO GOOD!! (And it helped that I was starving so it tasted extra good!)

IMG_8544 (600x400) IMG_8542 (600x400)

Kanz got the Flying Mayan, a burrito stuffed with sweet potato and black beans. Can’t recommend both of these dishes enough!

IMG_8549 (600x400)

After dinner we went next door for Matthew’s Chocolates!

IMG_8550 (400x600)

Matt and I shared a Mexican Spiced, a Peanut Butterfinger pumpkin and Hazelnut Bark. All three were amazing!

IMG_8554 (600x400) IMG_8552 (600x400) IMG_8551 (600x400)

We were too tired to go out partying – guess that means we’re not in high school anymore!

Sounds like so much fun! Reunions can be hit or miss, so I’m glad this one was a success.

Yum for those chocolates!

Yes, Fairly Light original plus warmth and pure radiance

7 Cathy October 10, 2011 at 12:56 pm

Keep it up Kath. Looking fabulous. Just wondering if you know of any blogs for a 60 yo.

8 KathEats October 10, 2011 at 1:06 pm

My mom is 57 and just started one!

9 Cathy October 10, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Thanks Kath. I will check it out.

10 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles October 8, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Aw! ….We had the husband’s 10 year reunion last weekend! There were only 10 in his graduating class and 8 of them made it back. It was a good time but being the outsider was kind of crazy- so I’m glad Matt was a good sport for you!
You looked beautiful for your 10 year reunion! ….I bet it was great to be there all sorts of successful and beautiful! Life if good!

11 Lynn @ the actor's diet October 8, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Fun reunion! I went to my 15 year a few years ago. It was kinda amazing.

12 Sweet and Savvy October 8, 2011 at 9:36 pm

Glad you had such a good day! :) It looks like the weather was perfect for an event like that! I love the yearbook flashback photos.

13 Christina @ Just Running October 8, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Sounds like a fun time! You mentioned there were lots of kids there, and that made me wonder: Do you plan to have kids?

14 KathEats October 9, 2011 at 8:29 am

Definitely – so long as we are lucky enough to have them!

15 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife October 8, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Awwww fun! I love your dress!

Your meal sounds/looks scrumptious too–such a great night, eh?? :)

16 Kelsey October 8, 2011 at 9:43 pm

That is one beautiful beer + sounds like a fun reunion — MAN I need a hushpuppy!

17 kathleen @ the daily crumb October 8, 2011 at 9:45 pm

never heard of anything like spinach and salmon enchiladas… sounds delicious!! what a fun day. i would say you definitely lived up to your “most likely to succeed” superlative :)

18 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio October 8, 2011 at 9:49 pm

That dinner looks rockin’! I hope my HS does a reunion. We shall see.

19 Khushboo October 8, 2011 at 10:03 pm

That looks so fun! I can’t wait till my HS reunion- such fond memories! Gotta love Facebook for making it infinitely easier to reconnect!

20 Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl October 8, 2011 at 10:08 pm

How fun to catch up w friends from high school and the surroundings associated. And the plantains and the pumpkins on that plate look delicious.

Glad to hear you had a great reunion trip!

21 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More October 8, 2011 at 10:16 pm

What a fun looking reunion!

22 Emma (Emma+Jacob) October 8, 2011 at 10:21 pm

This is such a beautiful post! Everything feels so warm, candid and just stunning!

And nothing beats the bond between with high school friends, even if it is not always possible to see one another all the time :)

23 Leslie Fisher October 8, 2011 at 10:27 pm

Cuuuute jacket! Looks perfect for fall! Where’s it from??

24 KathEats October 9, 2011 at 8:30 am

Thanks! Just got it at Loehmann’s

25 Kirsten October 8, 2011 at 10:34 pm

I’ve been following you for awhile. I had to comment because my friends call me Kirst too and you don’t see that very often.

26 Lindsay @ biking before bed October 8, 2011 at 10:39 pm

I love your pose for your senior picture. I’m sure it stood out with everyone else looking directly at the camera. I think you lived up to your senior superlative:)

27 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga October 8, 2011 at 10:48 pm

hushpuppy, fried plantain and Peanut Butterfinger pumpkin…wow, you had an awesome evening in food.

And in good company…what a blast seeing everyone.

I have never been to any of my reunions. Maybe I should try it, huh! :)

28 Michelle (The Runner's Plate) October 8, 2011 at 10:50 pm

I had to smile a little when I saw the senior photo to the right of yours in the yearbook. She used the FFA motto as her quote, and it reminded me of my time in FFA. Oh, the memories. :)

29 Sana October 8, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Hahaha I like that you were voted most successful 😉

30 Leila @ Spinach and Skittles October 8, 2011 at 11:57 pm

How fun! I graduated in 2001 too, but didn’t make it to my reunion :( Hopefully the 20! I think you should post more high school pictures – so fun to look back!

31 Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel October 9, 2011 at 12:05 am

Cinnamon slaw? Sweet potato & black bean burrito? Gahhhh it all sounds SO GOOD.

Glad to see that you had a fun time! My graduating class in high school was close to 1000 (yup..that big), so it’s funny for me to imagine attempting a reunion for all of us. I still have quite a way to go until that happens, though, but I’m looking forward to it!

32 Krystina (Organically Me) October 9, 2011 at 12:22 am

That reunion sounds so fun! And those meals, divine.

33 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) October 9, 2011 at 2:22 am

I really like your navy blue dress! It’s so simply, yet elegant. Lovely. :)

Looks like you had a great time. I don’t think I’d ever go to a school reunion, lol.

It also doesn’t surprise me that you were voted most likely to succeed!! You are definitely a go-getter.

34 Health Bee October 9, 2011 at 2:24 am

Love the peanut butterfinger pumpkin! Sounds like you had a blast!

35 Lee October 9, 2011 at 7:13 am

I went to mine back in 2006. (Ack, I dont even want to talk about how my 10 year reunion was 5 years ago!!) It was fun to see people but I kind of feel like nowadays with Facebook, you already know what everyone looks like! Glad you had a good time though.

36 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey October 10, 2011 at 8:12 am

Ha,ha… I’m right there with you… feeling ancient! Class of ’96! :)

37 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin October 9, 2011 at 7:23 am

That reunion looks so much more fun and relaxed than a reunion at some ballroom. I’m glad you guys had a great time!

38 Hillary October 9, 2011 at 7:30 am

My 10 year reunion will be here before I know it, but I wonder how many people will show up (due to Facebook—we all know what everyone else is up to!)

39 Karen October 9, 2011 at 7:52 am

As always, you did an awesome job of photographing this event…you capture the ‘moments’ at these gatherings especially well! I’d hire you in a minute for such an occasion!

Safe travels home, Kath!

40 Lauri ( October 9, 2011 at 8:01 am

FUN! Go figure you would get ‘most likely to succeed’! And success has definitely found you :)

My high school reunion was meh, but then again I haven’t really missed those days…

Dinner looks (and sounds) SO GOOD!

41 Brittany @ Eating Bird Food October 9, 2011 at 8:17 am

Sounds like your reunion was a fun one!

I went to Orange High too – obviously not the same one, but it’s still neat. :)

42 Jennifer October 9, 2011 at 8:20 am

What a great reunion!!! I love that it was not locked up inside some hotel somewhere. You looked great in those pictures. Did you think anyone had really changed significantly since you last saw them? Maybe another ten years. :)

That dinner is EXACTLY my favorite food! Plantains are heavenly and the cinnamon slaw sounds very interesting.

Glad you had a fun time. :)

43 katie @KatieDid October 9, 2011 at 8:41 am

Wow this looks like such a nice reunion and a ton of fun to catch up with so many old friends. And the sound of your high school parties reminds me of the movie- dazed and confused, where they party in big open fields. We had beach parties and bonfires, which is similar. I miss those!

44 JenATX October 9, 2011 at 9:55 am

Glad you had such a good time.. its always nice to return to your old stopping grounds :)

45 Alaina October 9, 2011 at 9:58 am

I actually can’t wait for my high school reunion next year. It looks like such a great event! I love that it was outside and in a barn. Very rustic. :-)

46 Nicole Dyan October 9, 2011 at 12:38 pm

It’s funny, my sister went to Orange High School in Orange, CA and her mascot was a panther too!

47 Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning October 9, 2011 at 12:44 pm

That looks like an awesome food adventure! I LOVE plantains- in any form! Glad you had fun at your 10-year reunion- mine should have been a big field party too because I definitely went to a high school out in farm country (literally, in the middle of a cow field)!

48 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats October 9, 2011 at 4:09 pm

your high school reunion looked like fun! Mine definitely won’t be like that, I went to a small private school, haha there are actually few people I’d want to catch up with. Makes me wish I had lived in a small town! Glad you enjoyed seeing everyone!

49 Angel7 October 9, 2011 at 9:03 pm

They hit the nail on the head when they voted you as “Most Likely to Succeed” in high school :)

50 Michaela October 10, 2011 at 6:39 am

I just recently read through my old yearbook and I can´t wait for a reunion! Only if it´s nearly as fun as yours 😉

51 Emily October 10, 2011 at 8:53 am

Class of 2001, woo hoo! Me too. I missed my 10 year reuni however. :-(

52 kristen October 10, 2011 at 10:07 am

thats so funny, i was on the newspaper at unc with your most likely to succeed partner!

53 KathEats October 10, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Awesome!! Matt Compton is such a character

54 Amber October 10, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Matthew’s Chocolates is so good, I always liked to go in for a treat when I would visit Hillsborough. I actually know a girl that graduated from Orange High School in 2001.

55 KathEats October 10, 2011 at 4:39 pm

56 Amber October 10, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Allison Knight, she just walked into my on-campus apartment the first week of college. I guess she went to orientation with one of my roommates. She always seemed to be around through mutual friends, she always seemed to know everyone! I guess she is in China now teaching students English otherwise I am sure she would have been at the reunion.

57 KathEats October 10, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Oh yeah!!! She and I were in dance company together for years. She’s very sweet :)

58 Andrea @ Run, Eat, Date, Sleep October 10, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Oh wow, our yearbook staff made us dress up in funny stuff for our superlative photos, but that skirt is a DOOZY!

59 Ashley M. [at] (never home)maker October 10, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Your high school reunion looks like way more fun than mine was!!! Mine was last spring — and, like you, we also didn’t party till late. Made me feel OLD. 28 isn’t old, though . . . right? Hahaha. Right. Anyway, that hazelnut bark looks delish, which is why this preggo foodie shouldn’t be reading blogs before bedtime <3

60 Charise October 11, 2011 at 7:04 am

Looks like a fun reunion, Kath! Mine was this summer and actually WAS two nights of partying until 3-4 am. And then it took me like 5 days to recover and get my sleeping back on track. :)

61 Dallas October 11, 2011 at 10:53 am

OHS ’03, yo. So funny! I worked on that yearbook… Total journalism nerd.

62 KathEats October 11, 2011 at 10:59 am

Oh yeah!? I worked on it too! Journalism with Mr. Cameron?

63 Dallas October 11, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Yes, ma’am! And I had an unbearable crush on Matt Compton.

64 KathEats October 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm

HAHA – really?! Did we know each other? Maybe we were in different levels of that class?

65 Dallas October 11, 2011 at 1:54 pm

I would have been a soph when you were a senior… So I think I was in journalism II and you would have been in III or IV?

And yes. I was horribly, pitifully, head over heels, crushing on MC. Oy. High School.

66 KathEats October 11, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Haha. Love it. Did you know my sister?

67 Dallas October 11, 2011 at 2:49 pm

What’s your sister’s name?

68 KathEats October 11, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Laura Younger… class of ’04

69 Dallas October 11, 2011 at 2:55 pm

I think so. This is so funny! I’m just a casual reader and had no idea you were from H-Vegas. Hooray for the Panthers!

70 Shaun @ snackasaurusrex October 13, 2011 at 12:46 pm

We got to tour the Abita brewery on our trip to NOLA this summer…I too fell in love with the AndyGator!!!

71 Lele October 15, 2011 at 6:42 pm

Looks fun! But, uh… were you mildly horrified that the (male) most likely to succeed was sitting at a desk and the (female) most likely to succeed was made to pose as if answering the phone like a secretary? I might’ve made a pointed statement!
