And We’re Off!

December 22, 2007

Got up at 6:30 to head the gym by 7:30 when it opened.

Had the usual before we left:

Great workout this morning: Stairs, ET, and weights. I did 5 extra minutes because of the vacation approaching. Go me! 500 kcal burned.

Breakfast was the usual – oatmeal made with vanilla soy milk, PB, walnuts, flax and cinnamon. No brown sugar or maple syrup to keep my cravings at bay! (I haven’t 100% determined if adding them makes me crave sugar more later in the day, but I have noticed it enough on a few occasions that if I need to be particularly mindful one day I’ll skip it on purpose).

And decaf hazelnut/french vanilla coffee….

Breakfast calories (including toast) = 540.

It was so fun getting dressed with the sun shining in the windows (normally it’s still dark when I’m getting ready :( ).

I’ve got my hair curled and a festive outfit on ready for an early present exchange with the husband’s family (and I hear there’s “wine and Christmas cheer” so I might be having an afternoon cocktail!) Then tonight we’re going to this great local white-tablecloth restaurant that has small portions and great seafood. It’s exactly the kind of place you want to go to get good food in a nice restaurant. I might not have wine with dinner – which is something that is totally NOT me but I’ve learned that I just feel better if I don’t have wine and would rather spend the days before Christmas feeling my best so I can enjoy Christmas Day itself more. So, I might just have one glass this afternoon and skip it at dinner.

Gotta go pack and drive 2 hours to my parents’ house.

Enjoy your holidays and remember: Only put it in your mouth if you’re going to savor every bite and REALLY enjoy the pleasure of food. Try not to mindlessly eat “just because it’s there.”

Your brain may be on a holiday, but your body deserves the same respect on Christmas as every other day of the year.

But still enjoy yourselves!

Have a great holiday Kath! I have a future-nutritionist question. I know you probably won't be able to respond to comments while on holiday…but when you can…

Yesterday I really went overboard with the sugar (the whole nasty tale is recounted in my CK blog), and this morning when I woke up besides feeling bloated and headachey like usual after eating poorly, my muscles ached! Does that make sense? Can sugar really do that to you (especially if your body isn't used to having that much of it)?

Thanks for such an inspirational post! I've been trying to come up with my 'plan' for Christmas treats and whether moderation or one day of big time excess will be my plan and your words really clicked for me.

Thanks for all that you do (it really is incredible) and Merry Christmas!

Oh and congratulations! on your decision to go back to school, your future R.D. clients will be very lucky people.

Hey Kath,

I have just started reading your blog and really like it, but was just curious if all this posting about food, calories, and exercise and constantly evaluating your diet… makes you feel less healthy, than more health? I know many women get in that kind of mind trap (including myself!!!). Do you think this blog helps you feel healthier or sometimes takes away from other things in your life because you are always posting and taking pictures of the food you eat?? (This may seem like a weird question because you continue to do the blog…which I do like to read!) I find it interesting to see how someone else deals with food and calories…and while I am ALL for being healthy and balanced, I think we sometimes take it to the extreme…thoughts??

p.s. How do you know how many calories you burn in a workout? I never believe those exercise machines, is there a better way?

Kath, I found out about your blog from EatLikeMe and I'm addicted. I love the inspirational comments at the end of your blog. It really gave me something to think about…how to respect my body during the holidays when there is so much food around! (I've been doing not so good lately, due to the abundance of junk food around me at all times…this is definitely something to tell myself before I take a bite of whatever it is that looks so good! :) ) Thanks and have a great Christmas! :)
