And Then I Got Off My Bike..

February 13, 2011

Matt and I like to do something outdoorsy together on Sundays. A scenic run, a hike or a long bike ride. Last weekend we hiked. Today we biked!

We biked ALL over town – covering 16 miles in an hour 45 minutes.

We aren’t planning to buy a house for a while – at least a year – maybe longer. But we used today to scope out neighborhoods. We’ve pretty much decided exactly where we want to live and the style of house we want. Now it’s just a matter of saving and saving until we can afford to buy there.

I didn’t feel all that tired …until I got off my bike!! I walked inside like a cowboy who’d rode 100 miles on a horse!

We were both ready for lunch – a pimento cheese-based lunch!

Lots of leftover veggies with a honkin’ pile of Kelsey’s pimento cheese

A few almonds

An AMAZING stack of Carr’s whole wheat cookie crackers with chocolate goat cheese

Look closely! They were amazing! [I can’t get enough of these Wendy!]

Chip crumbles

Oh, and pineapple.

Tasting plates are the best!

I got a little to do this afternoon, and then we’re going to dinner – we have an invitation!

Chocolate goat cheese? Sounds terrific.

2 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats February 13, 2011 at 3:44 pm

I know – that was totally my reaction too. Kath, did you buy the chocolate goat cheese at a farmer’s market or make it yourself with plain goat cheese?

3 Lauren at KeepItSweet February 13, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Those crackers look like cookies, yum!

4 Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin February 13, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Wow 16 miles is awesome! It’s fun to dream about owning a house and where to live and what you’ll do with it. I have another 1-2 years until I can realistically buy, too. Wish it was sooner!

5 Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete February 13, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Awesome bike ride!

It is so nice here in MN today (almost 40 degrees!) and I am heading out to take a nice long walk. I can’t wait!

That goat cheese looks fab!

6 Freya (Brit Chick Runs) February 13, 2011 at 2:51 pm

What an awesome bike ride!
I thought you’d just bought a it a rental?

7 KathEats February 13, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Yup, we’re just renting

8 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen February 13, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Chocolate goat cheese?? Amazing!

9 Amanda February 13, 2011 at 2:53 pm

dude, those are my favorite cookies ever. they taste almost like dessert and they crumble in your mouth with sweet goodness!

10 Kristy @ KristyRuns February 13, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Tasting plate looks amazing. I need to do that more often!

Owning a home is great…minus all the little repairs you have to do yourself all the time. 😉 No landlord anymore! But it’s worth it.

11 Stacy @ Every Little Thing February 13, 2011 at 2:57 pm

I love bike-riding! I could go forever, but then I die when I get off haha.

Yummy tasting lunch!

12 Estela @ Weekly Bite February 13, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Gorgeous looking plate!! The chocolate goat cheese has my attention :)

13 Meg February 13, 2011 at 3:02 pm

What an epic bikeride 😀

…and an EPIC tasting plate for lunch! I love fresh pineapple!

14 Simply Life February 13, 2011 at 3:05 pm

those cookie cracker look great!

15 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) February 13, 2011 at 3:05 pm

What a great ride! I havent ridden a bike in ages.

I think it’s AWESOME that you are sitting tight, really evaluating a home purchase, and just really really making sure. I have JUMPED into many real estate transactions only to find myself with a house I dont truly love or a payment that’s ridic expensive and then have had to un-do it all. You are smart for taking your time and in this market, it’s SUCH a buyer’s market, you can name the tune :)

16 Katie @ peacebeme February 13, 2011 at 3:05 pm

Before my nerve disease started, I used to love going on long bike rides with my boyfriend on the weekends. He just got home from Afghanistan, but I enjoy going swimming with him now when he comes to visit. That’s all I can do now, and I am lucky he used to swim competitively because he loves it.

17 Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn February 13, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Cookie crackers?! I die. That plate looks scrumdiddlyumptious!

18 hippierunner February 13, 2011 at 3:14 pm

That tasting plate looks great. I need to remember to make that more often especially as I love having bites of different things to eat.

19 Christie {Nourishing Eats} February 13, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Tasting plate is my lunch today, too. I just saw your wild oats in O magazine!! So very exciting!

20 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table February 13, 2011 at 3:32 pm

I love to ride around looking at houses (and crashing the occasional open house) and I own a place. So much fun to see what others have done with their spaces!

21 claire February 13, 2011 at 3:41 pm

Wait…wait. Chocolate AND goat cheese? Those might be two of my favorite things and now I see I can get combined? Wow.

22 kell February 13, 2011 at 3:41 pm

chocolate goat cheese!!! yum! . . . is that a recipe??

23 Camille February 13, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Chocolate goat cheese!? Holy cow! (cheese humor :) )

24 KathEats February 13, 2011 at 3:49 pm

The choco goat cheese is from a gourmet shop here in Cville called Feast!

25 ilana February 13, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Of course! That’s where I got you the pumpkin one! 😉

26 Lisa (bakebikeblog) February 13, 2011 at 3:51 pm

wow – I love all the colours!

27 Namaste Gurl February 13, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Mmmm, chocolate goat cheese sounds beyond amazing.

28 Annette February 13, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I love LOVE taster plates as well :)

29 Baking 'n' Books February 13, 2011 at 3:58 pm

So…I totally got the O magazine today – call me as lame as you want – I think I’ll look as it as inspiration. In my dreams.

That’s a lot of biking! -do you road bike? Also, a “hot topic” among my female friends is that their BF’s/husbands eat differently than they do and more – making it difficult to live together! Do you and Matt eat the same pretty much?

30 Lauren February 13, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I got on the bike for the first time in months last weekend and I swear just NOW is my butt feeling back to normal. WOW I forgot how rough it can be on the behind. Sounds like a wonderful Sunday so far.

31 Mary Frances February 13, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Try a Gel bicycle seat.

32 Carol February 13, 2011 at 4:46 pm

My hubby and I bike around the developments near us also scoping out our next house. So much fun! Glad you had a great day!

33 Heather February 13, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I wish I had a bike – as soon as we get a place I could store one!

Great workout – and I love tasting plates as well. Each bite is different!

34 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write February 13, 2011 at 5:01 pm

We’re moving to Portland in 2.5 weeks, and I’m really looking forward to getting a bike. It’s considered one of the most bikeable of all cities. Woot!

I’m a little freaked out about riding on the road. Does it scare you?

35 KathEats February 13, 2011 at 5:03 pm

It did in Charlotte where the drivers were crazy, but here I’m very comfortable with it. Plus there are tons of bike lanes!

36 Lee February 13, 2011 at 5:01 pm

I am also in awe of the chocolate goat cheese. Please elaborate on this!

37 Liz @ Tip Top Shape February 13, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Chocolate goat cheese?! Where can I get this???

38 Mary @ Bites and Bliss February 13, 2011 at 5:11 pm

That’s so strange how biking can do that! They either wear you out while riding, or keep you feeling fine until you get off!

39 Katy (The Singing Runner) February 13, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Perfect day for a bike ride! 😀

40 Alexa @ Simple Eats February 13, 2011 at 5:28 pm

Mmm…chocolate goat cheese?! I would’ve never thought of that, yum!

41 Michelle (The Runner's Plate) February 13, 2011 at 5:37 pm

My husband and I love getting outdoors, but not today–it is 13*. Spring, please come soon!!

42 Mama Pea February 13, 2011 at 5:55 pm

I miss tasting plates. Yours is gorgeous! And I know I’m late to the game, but congrats on Oprah. Can I be your “Gayle?” :)

43 Hannah February 13, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Tasting plates are absolutely the best – yours include more veggies and less chocolate than mine usually do, though 😛

44 AJ @ Flowing to Fifty February 13, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Don’t you love when someone else cooks for you? Twice the food pleasure.

45 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 13, 2011 at 6:47 pm

Chocolate goat cheese? Now that is something I’ve got to try!

46 Jackie February 13, 2011 at 6:59 pm

OMG, I love Carr’s whole wheat crackers! They taste like delicious gram crackers! I love them with blue cheese.

47 Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) February 13, 2011 at 7:06 pm

chocolate goat cheese? what will they think of next! I guess it goes to show that chocolate can be paired with anything and make it tastes amazing :)
Glad you were able to enjoy some outdoorsy time! We are looking at houses too, it’s so exciting, isn’t it?! :)

48 Jess (Sweet Potato) February 13, 2011 at 7:07 pm

Your food is always so colorful! I love it!

49 wendy sue February 13, 2011 at 7:09 pm

glad you liked the chocolate goat cheese! thanks for having me over!

50 Marisa @ Loser for Life February 13, 2011 at 7:13 pm

I used to buy those Carr whole wheat crackers all the time! They had a sweet taste to them that was so good. I kinda forgot about them; thanks for the reminder!

51 Lee @ Fit Foodie Finds February 13, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I call this a “garbage plate.” I give it a 2 thumbs up!

52 Allison @ Happy Tales February 13, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Chocolate goat cheese?! I have never heard of such a thing!

53 Lisa Fine - lisasfoods February 13, 2011 at 8:06 pm

Those are my absolute favorite kind of cracker! I love that they’re sweet – delicious with cheese, especially some ricotta with a drizzle of honey. Yum.

54 Errign February 13, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I love that about biking – the tiredness doesn’t really hit until you’re done!

55 Heather February 13, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Chocolate goat cheese! Oh, I think my heart just skipped a beat! I agree, I love plates with a little bit of everything!

56 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) February 13, 2011 at 9:05 pm

I’m gonna guess and say you edited these photos in RAW?! They look SO much better!! Way to go.

57 KathEats February 13, 2011 at 11:35 pm

NOPE! 100% cooked.

58 KathEats February 13, 2011 at 11:35 pm

PS. I don’t believe in raw

59 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) February 14, 2011 at 9:41 am

Really?! I thought you liked it? Or are you just editing cooked in lightroom now?

60 KathEats February 14, 2011 at 9:42 am

Yup! I’ve never shot in RAW. I did once and couldn’t notice a difference, so I went back to JPG in a heartbeat

61 Baking 'n' Books February 14, 2011 at 3:51 pm

LOL – so I thought you were talking about the food itself as in eating raw versus cooked 😉

62 stacey-healthylife February 13, 2011 at 9:12 pm

I love having party leftovers. It makes for fun lunch’s or dinner’s the next day.

63 Kristen, Sweetly February 13, 2011 at 9:35 pm

hahahaha. i believe, when i sat down at the dinner table, my dad made the comment that my plate looked fit for a cowboy. i was so confused! it was because it was probably bigger than my face. :-p

64 Christin@purplebirdblog February 13, 2011 at 10:56 pm

Those Carr’s crackers are so cookie-ish!!

65 Alaina February 13, 2011 at 11:50 pm

Tastings plates are the best!

I met someone at the hotel yesterday who was from Charlottesville, VA and told her about how I follow your blog and love the town that you’re from! I would love to visit when all of the galleries are open. :-)

66 Alaina February 13, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Or should say, when the galleries are open and serving free food and wine. :-)

67 Kiran February 14, 2011 at 9:27 am

Love the plethora of healthy yet sumptuous foods :)

68 Natalia - a side of simple February 14, 2011 at 10:34 am

I know it’s already been admired, but chocolate goat cheese?! Sigh*

69 Kelly - February 14, 2011 at 11:45 am

Yum!! Looking forward to having nice enough weather here in Nebraska to enjoy a bike ride!

70 Angelea February 14, 2011 at 2:55 pm

I love, love, love how you guys plan an outdoorsy activity on Sundays. I’ve been trying to get my husband to commit to doing the same thing, but no luck so far! He has weekend commitment issues. Haha! I think I’m going to have to just load my toddler up and go on my own!!!

71 Molly @ the F-spot February 14, 2011 at 5:58 pm

I can SO relate to the “and then I got off my bike” comment! I went for a 44-mile ride on Saturday and had to stop mid-way through for a water refill. Getting off my bike was the biggest mistake! My bike fell over and the brake caliper got nudged into the wheel rim. I rode the last ~20 miles basically like I had the brakes on! MY LEGS WERE ON FIRE! I just blogged about it… Ha!

It does make the food taste that much better, though! 😉

72 sab February 15, 2011 at 2:52 am

73 KathEats February 15, 2011 at 8:12 am
