All’s Well That Ends Well

May 18, 2011

My day ended with this:

So how it started is no longer important!

I was a grouch. I was really tired. I don’t know what was up! Perhaps the fact that I didn’t get too much activity today.

Instead of yoga, I made labels! [Labelmaker on sale for $14.99 at Staples!]

And ate Baked Oatmeal Snack Bars. I’m just not in love with these bars. Sorry Kath!

I am in love with our army of local honey bears! They are now friends with Beaker, Bocker + Churton. That is…until they are adopted by the locals.

We have sandwich menus and newsletters!

And we have WILD ANIMALS barging into the house!!!

Sniff sniff

The Tiger LOVED my grandmother’s oriental rug! He must have smelled Smotey and Murph and all the kitties of ages past.

This evening I perked up with some IPA

And some veggies

And Faith + Tate!

We had a last-minute impromptu joint dinner. I love joint dinners! Combining ingredients and labor makes everything easier and fun!

I was the grillmaster – zucchini, salt, pepper, olive oil and smoked paprika

Matt was the beer master. Duh.

Faith worked on the beans – a can of refried pintos from Whole Foods mixed with homemade black beans and some herbs, cayenne, cumin and salt

We piled the beans, veggies, and Faith’s HOMEMADE CHEESE (she made it this afternoon with grass-fed milk and a special technique that I know nothing about but admire her so for!)

Toppings included greek yogurt and Cholula. We served them on crispy corn tortillas – also from Whole Foods – that I keep in my freezer for last-minute dinners. I grilled them and they got crispy so we were able to break off pieces and eat the tostadas like nachos! Loved this dinner!

Faith + Tate jumped up enthusiastically and without hesitation after dinner at the suggestion of “Let’s go for a walk!!” The evening had turned from stormy to beautiful! We hiked around the neighborhood for a good 40 minutes until settling into Francesca’s final slice of Tiramisu and a few cookies I had frozen from Cville Market’s bulk bins.

Faith and I had a mini Gossip Girl love fest oogling over our favorite episodes, characters and songs. The finale episode was wonderful – best of this season!!

I’m off to read my book – Matt’s got the alarm set early because he is BAKING tomorrow!!

7 faith May 18, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I loved that dinner too. Thanks again!

8 staceyhealthylife May 18, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Getting in a lot of activity and moving around really does affect someone’s mood. I think we just get used to keeping active and when we aren’t it’s mentally and physically difficult on us.

9 Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out May 18, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Aww, I’m glad your day ended well. Chin up!

10 Meg May 18, 2011 at 9:35 pm

14 Valerie @ City|Life|Eats May 18, 2011 at 9:42 pm

Great looking dinner!

15 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) May 18, 2011 at 9:43 pm

I love label makers! I have no need for one, but that’s so cheap I kind of want it on principle alone!

16 The Healthy Hipster May 18, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I also have a label maker addiction. I use it to label all my pantry jars. Except mine is very old timey and I have to use all the power my hand musclez to punch in each letter. O-A-T-S. B-U-C-K-W-H-E-A-T. I could go on… 😉

17 Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) May 18, 2011 at 9:50 pm

faith’s homemade cheese? Ok i am going to go stalk her blog for a recipe maybe! sounds delish! whether it’s real cheese or nut-based cheeze, I am off to find out…

Joint + impromptu dinners? Yes, awesome! No one has kids, enjoy it while you can :)

The veggies, the desserts, the time with friends, looks great!

Animals walking in? Yes, I left my front door open here in Aruba and an iguana tried to walk in. yikes! :)

18 Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 18, 2011 at 9:55 pm

21 Angela (Oh She Glows) May 18, 2011 at 10:12 pm

I cant believe I still have not seen this week’s Gossip Girl! Maybe I’ll watch it now…

22 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 18, 2011 at 10:22 pm

your dinner looks fab!! I did not know you could freeze tortillas….I guess that makes sense. HA :)

23 Ashley (Feeding Ashley) May 18, 2011 at 10:24 pm

Those vegetables look so good. I’m glad your day perked up!

24 rachel May 18, 2011 at 10:48 pm

I made the oatmeal bars today and I think they were too salty for me! Need to add some chocolate or jam, but then I guess they become more desserty and less breakfasty…

25 Alaina May 18, 2011 at 10:53 pm

What a wonderful end to the day! Does the owner of El Tigre know how popular he is now that he’s on your blog? 😉

26 KathEats May 19, 2011 at 8:43 am

Not yet…I do want to go introduce myself to “Tigers Mother”

27 Tori (Fresh Fruition) May 18, 2011 at 10:55 pm

Home made cheese, oh my! That entire meal looks absolutely DELICIOUS! Yum!

28 McKayla @ Green Groats May 18, 2011 at 11:00 pm

What a great combined dinner effort! Looks delicious per usual!

Don’t you just love label makers?? I’ve been using them a lot lately at work…

29 Lea @ Healthy Coconut May 18, 2011 at 11:03 pm

It’s how you end your day that matters…and you ended yours on a positive note. So the cute tiger is now allowed in the house? lol!

30 Justeen @ Blissful Baking May 18, 2011 at 11:34 pm

MMm homemade cheese sounds amazing!!

31 Emma (Namaste Everyday) May 18, 2011 at 11:53 pm

you are so lucky to have a good friend who lives so close – I mean to say a good friend who makes her own cheese! Is she going to blog about it because I want to learn!

32 Hannah May 18, 2011 at 11:54 pm

Oooh, I watched half of the GG finale over breakfast… and I’ll have to wait until tomorrow for the rest as I’m at a gospel concert tonight!

33 Christine May 19, 2011 at 12:04 am

Dang it, I’m really wishing I was current on GG. I’m still on last season when Chuck lost and then regained his hotel! My priorities are out of whack 😉

34 Khushboo May 19, 2011 at 12:52 am

Faith + Tate seem like such a great couple- so similar to you and Matt! That dinner is the perfect example of synergy :)! The GH material looks great! Love how interactive you both already are with the community.

35 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) May 19, 2011 at 2:05 am

Dinner looks deeelish!

I’m surprised your bakery will be closed on Sundays! 😯 Lots of people swoon over fresh bakery bread on their only day off. I know I do! (7 days a week, actually!)

36 KathEats May 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

Almost all GH have at least 1 day off – some have 2. We have to have a rest day, and that’s the best day to do it

37 Jumanah @ Healthy Living in the Middle East May 19, 2011 at 2:45 am

Dinner looks delicious!

Jealous of your label maker. I’ve been wanting one for awhile now!

38 Cait @ Beyond Bananas May 19, 2011 at 4:45 am

The addition of the paprika to the zucchini makes it look so saucy! 😉

39 qq:) May 19, 2011 at 5:25 am

nice tiramisu

40 Lauren at Keep It Sweet May 19, 2011 at 5:26 am

A long walk with a friend sounds like the perfect end to the day. Hope today is a great day for you:-)

41 [email protected] Flying ONION May 19, 2011 at 5:48 am

I love the look of your bakery!! So quaint but modern all at the same time. 😀

Do you guys plan on keeping Tigger? I think he likes it in your home. 😀

42 KathEats May 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

No, he has a home!

43 Christine @ Burning It Off May 19, 2011 at 5:49 am

Homemade cheese is amazing… a girl at my office makes it and sometimes brings in samples for everyone to try. She explained the process to me once but I can’t remember anything about it, except that it’s complicated lol.

44 Lauren May 19, 2011 at 5:53 am

I love the newsletters!!! They look fantastic Kath. So does dinner. :)

45 Vanessa May 19, 2011 at 6:02 am

Ahh!! Tiger!! I love your honey bears!! Good luck with the baking tomorrow!

46 Ann May 19, 2011 at 6:16 am

You don’t like the baked oatmeal bars??? Not worth making?

47 KathEats May 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

I don’t dislike them, but I don’t love them

48 Holly @ The Runny Egg May 19, 2011 at 6:35 am

Those tacos look delicious! I too love spur of the moment dinners with friends — everyone pitches in and makes a great meal!

49 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 19, 2011 at 6:44 am

I got so excited for you guys when I read that Matt is baking! Good luck to him. I hope he has fun and that you get an incredible first batch out!

50 Kristen Waby May 19, 2011 at 6:55 am

I love seeing pics of your home. It’s so warm, inviting, simple and classic!

51 Mark May 19, 2011 at 7:01 am

That IPA looked pretty tastety. How about some beer recipies on here too!

52 Stephanie May 19, 2011 at 7:28 am

Would you post the menu and newsletter so we can see it up close? 😀

53 KathEats May 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

Just go on over to and you can see it all there

54 Maggie @ Say Yes to Salad May 19, 2011 at 7:34 am

Joint dinners are the best!! It’s also way easier to cook for 4 than it is to cook for 2.

55 Stephanie @ StephSnacks May 19, 2011 at 7:38 am

I hate the feeling of being unsatisfied or antsy during my day, but it definitelynhappens from time to time. Your day definitely turned around though! Everything w the store is coming along great :) oh, and the beer doesn’t look half bad either.

56 Hope May 19, 2011 at 7:43 am

The newsletters and menus look great!! Everything is coming along so nicely in your store! I really need to come visit once it opens! :)

I agree with you on the episode of Gossip Girl! It was definitely a good one! Oh and the ending! What a cliffhanger that was!!!! :)

57 Grace @ Healthy Dreaming May 19, 2011 at 7:45 am

Pictures look so beautiful! I love looking at your blog every day!

58 MonsteRawr May 19, 2011 at 8:06 am

Some days are just grouchy ones. It happens to us all, and the best we can do is hope to cross paths with someone that can make us smile. Looks like you were so lucky!

59 Chad @ thebreakupnote May 19, 2011 at 8:17 am

What’s important is that you owned the day and didn’t let the sun go down on the grouchy!

60 Jessa May 19, 2011 at 8:43 am

The newsletters looks fantastic and the pic of you and Matt is perfect. The more I keep reading your blog, and hearing about all this great bread from Great Harvest it makes me wish I were close to one so I could enjoy some of it. Especially, after seeing your Cinnamon Chip French Toast!
Man that look ssoooooooo good.

61 Melissa May 19, 2011 at 8:55 am

I finally watched the GG season finale last night and loved it, too!

The bakery looks amazing! It appears to be fully functional! :)

62 Lisa May 19, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Interesting spices to add to the zucchini! When we grill zucchini, I put steak seasoning on it, olive oil. Grill and then add blue cheese or goat cheese to it. YUM.

63 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen May 19, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Aww – kitty! and dinner looks fantastic. I really need to get myself a label maker – trip to Staples tomorrow to scope out sales? Perhaps…perhaps.
