All Work and All Play

April 30, 2011

Today felt so productive from both a work and play viewpoint!

As you probably saw, we spent all morning cleaning + organizing the bakery. My cereal powered me through! We had to get the whole lobby clear so they can put in our countertops and floor this coming week. Despite a full day of cleaning, the bakery is still SO dirty!!

Just before 1pm, Allie arrived!

She’s apartment hunting with her mom because she’s going to be working for us!!

Allie brought me Alliebars!!! Wheeeeeeee! Matt and I shared one for an appetizer to lunch!

We ventured across the parking lot to Cville Coffee, which is truly one of the best lunch spots in Cville! McIntire Plaza is going to rock the lunch crowd soon!

Cville Coffee has such a great salad

It’s covered in beans + olives + veggies and you can add a slab of the most amazing marinated tofu imaginable!

Thanks so much to Allie’s mom for treating us to lunch!!

After touring an apartment with Allie (since I am the ultimate house hunter!!) I went back to work for a bit and then we called it quits around 4PM.

We headed over to our friend’s house – Seamane and Rob, who are beer connoisseurs and homebrewers!  They had a delicious brew bubbling away –

These guys really know where to find the good beers – they were 5 for 5 on the tasting front this afternoon! Everything I tasted was incredible!!

Gouden Carolus Blonde Ale – YUM!

My favorite was the Grande Cru by Great Divide Brewing Company! A beer you can CHEW!

We also tried a smoked beer – loved this one because I love all things smoked!

And finally – this Gouden Carolus Easter special beer – that had such strong notes of anise it was like licorice meets mint! Loved how unique this was –

I snacked on a few handfuls of pretzel chips – was hungry after all that dust moving! And see that Cadbury Crème Egg? I didn’t get anything from the Easter Bunny this year :( Seamane let me snag one of her eggs – excited to enjoy it for dessert someday this week!

Seamane and Avery gave us a nice show –

And some downdog yooooga!

We said farewell to our friends in the evening and headed home for a quick shower and change of clothes and went back out – on bikes again – to Jess + Mike’s place for a cookout!

Jess made beef burgers and also Emily’s Black Bean Burgers! Such a great recipe!

While they cooked, we nibbled on a spread of snacks

Including this great version of spinach dip made with greek yogurt (don’t have the recipe – sorry – but perhaps Jess will share in the comments?!)

Dinner was burgers, salad, and Jess’s awesome baked french fries, which she said we had to eat on our salads “Pittsburg style”

Great recommendation – fries are like hearty croutons!

After a few glasses of water, I had a half glass of Matt’s German beer

For dessert, Jess made Jessica’s Better-Than-Crack Brownies!

These were unlike any brownie I’d had before – the top layer was INcredible!! Like fudge meets rice crispie treat meets ganache!!

We enjoyed them over some Breyer’s ice cream – slightly melted just how I like it!

So good I couldn’t keep my paws off of the brownies – went back for a half a second!

The bike ride home was dark and scary. I don’t think I want to do that one again. I almost biked right into a ditch, which would have been terrifying since I couldn’t see a thing. Glad to be home safe and sound now.

Off to bed!

Can’t wait for future play dates! And eating dates and million dollar house hunting dates!

3 Danielle April 30, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Gosh, what a fabulous day! Especially being as it ended with brownies. YUM. And here I thought I was the only one that was going to sleep wonderfully soundly tonight :)

4 Stephanie C April 30, 2011 at 10:47 pm

Yay for Great Divide Grand Cru! Love that beer right now.

5 Jaime April 30, 2011 at 10:48 pm

7 lynn @ the actor's diet April 30, 2011 at 11:01 pm

i have a creme egg every year but this one i ate it too early – like the day i saw it at the drugstore!

8 Khushboo April 30, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Believe it or not, even after 8 years in London Ive never tried a cream egg! Despite only hearing rave reviews, the cream filling doesn’t do anything for me! Let me know what you think.

9 Danielle @ weightsandmeasures April 30, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Those brownies do look quite enticing! I went to a Royal Wedding tea last night where a friend served the biscuit bake William had at the reception. It was hard to stick to just one piece. It was incredible!

10 KathEats May 1, 2011 at 8:21 am

I would LOVE to try that cake!!

11 Dalai Lina April 30, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I don’t know how you have time to take so many pictures, but they are always so fun to look at!

12 Emily @ One Sweet Vegan April 30, 2011 at 11:32 pm

I’m sure Allie loved the bakery!

16 Marina May 1, 2011 at 12:05 am

What a great busy day!
That big slices of tofu on your salad make my mouth water :))

17 Hannah May 1, 2011 at 12:36 am

That is so very, very exciting that Allie is going to be working for you! Oh, if only I lived in America, I’d be happy even to volunteer with you :)

18 hippierunner May 1, 2011 at 1:25 am

I love that you guys bike when you can! Sorry about the scary ride home- I’ve had those before! :( You need to get a bike light for each of your handlebars! Even a small one can help you see a lot better. :)

19 Canadian May 1, 2011 at 6:07 am

Yes, get yourselves some bike lights!

20 KathEats May 1, 2011 at 8:22 am

We do have lights!!! They just weren’t bright enough. It was REALLY dark!

21 melissa May 1, 2011 at 2:28 am

Our fridge is completely bare because we leave for a trip to Hawaii on Monday and seeing all of you pictures is making me HUNGRY!

22 Jun May 1, 2011 at 3:29 am

how many pets do you actually have? And i agree, biking/ running/ walking or just doing anything in dark is simply scary!

23 Alison AP May 1, 2011 at 4:22 am

Yay Pittsburgh style! Was someone there from Pittsburgh, or are our salads just that well known? :)

24 Jess May 1, 2011 at 7:05 am

I, the cook, am from pittsburgh!

you a steelers fan? i’m a huge one! (i live in cville too :)

27 Jess May 1, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Yes die hard steelers fan! 😀 I’m in Cville for grad school….missing Pittsburgh lots!

28 cathy May 1, 2011 at 4:55 am

what a hugely productive day, kath! you must feel a great sense of satisfaction with the progress being made at the bakery. more dust = more accomplished!
just wanted to let you know that you’ve inspired me to dust off my bike – i live in the heart of my city, so i am eager to try biking short distances to do errands when it’s too far to walk – thanks for the positive role modelling!

29 Cait @ Beyond Bananas May 1, 2011 at 5:37 am

Looks like you had such a fun time with your friends..and worked hard at the bakery. So fun that your friends brew their own beer. An old friend and I bought a kit once at like Bed, Bath, and Beyond – but it was gross. It would be cool to REALLY know what your are doing though!

30 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 1, 2011 at 6:07 am

Ive drooled over that recipe of Jessica’s so many times but have never made them. you have just convinced me w/ your amazing description of them!

The househunting and time speint with Allie, time w/ friends, wow, what a fun weekend you’ve had!

31 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin May 1, 2011 at 6:11 am

That’s so exciting that Allie is coming to work for you guys! It’s funny how blogging brings people together like that.

32 Kristi May 1, 2011 at 6:15 am

Wow! You really pack as much as you can into a day :)

33 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 1, 2011 at 6:46 am

That is so great that Allie is coming to work for you guys! You are going to have such a fantastic bakery there! It looks amazing…you know I’m totally living through you right now! I hope you had a great night’s sleep!

34 Estela @ Weekly Bite May 1, 2011 at 6:52 am

What a fun filled evening! I’ve been wanting to bake Jess’s Brownies for months now :)

35 McKayla (green groats) May 1, 2011 at 7:03 am

Both of your salads looks delicious!!

Yes, biking in the dark is scary – especially without a light!

36 Jess May 1, 2011 at 7:53 am

See! I’m not crazy….biking around our house at night is terrifying!

Spinach dip recipe (embarrassingly easy):
2 6oz containers of 0% greek yogurt
Frozen chopped spinach thawed and ALL the water rung out
1/2 cup of chopped water chestnuts
1 packet of ranch dressing mix

Mix and chill before serving :-)

37 KathEats May 1, 2011 at 8:22 am

Thanks Jess!!!

38 Melissa May 1, 2011 at 7:55 am

YAY! It’s coming together!!! Good job taking some time to enjoy yourselves–you need it & deserve it! 😀

39 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 1, 2011 at 8:12 am

41 Baking Books May 1, 2011 at 8:15 am

Is that cheddar cheese in the salad? Everything looks so great.

Isn’t Allie another blogger?!? That’s incredible – does she live close to your area or move just for the job? Has she worked in bakeries before? Neat!

42 AnneWF May 1, 2011 at 8:18 am

What a busy, productive and satisfying Saturday you two had. Good for you. It’s great that you bike so much to get around. Have you considered getting lights for your bikes? We did this after we found ourselves biking into the evening hours. At first it was more for the other drivers, so they could see us, but then as we did more in the dark it was good for us to see where we were going. Just a thought. Have a great Sunday.

43 KathEats May 1, 2011 at 8:22 am

We do have them – they are just not that great in the front

44 staceyhealthylife May 1, 2011 at 9:36 am

Sounds like another fun weekend. Lots of good eats!!!!

45 betty@runbetty May 1, 2011 at 9:51 am

Kind-of random but… how do you pronounce your friend Seamane’s name? I’m so curious!

50 KathEats May 1, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Sha-mane :)

51 janis May 1, 2011 at 3:43 pm

williams biscuit cake recipe is on oprahs website

52 amanda May 1, 2011 at 5:17 pm

the smoky beer you mentioned and had a picture of is the bomb. it is popping up all over food blogs too! i love it because I studied abroad in Bamberg, Germany, the town in Bavaria where the beer is brewed. talk about fun, sitting around drinking Schrenkrla and trying desperately to speak German. Lots of good memories. Hope you are having a great weekend.

53 Lauren @ MRS May 1, 2011 at 8:16 pm

It looks like it’s coming along quite well, I can’t wait till you guys finally open it! And those brownies looks so scrumptious, fortunately I can compensate my cravings with a great batch of chocolate silvanas from yesterday.

54 Michelle May 2, 2011 at 11:17 am

YAY! Love the brownie recipe and love that it opened in a new window even better! Thanks!

55 Charise May 3, 2011 at 7:06 am

Looks like a super fun day! I’ll have to try the yogurt switch for spinach dip. How about that brownie recipe too? :)

56 KathEats May 3, 2011 at 7:27 am

I linked to the recipe in the post..

57 Charise May 3, 2011 at 7:29 am

Oops – I think I was too busy drooling over the picture to notice! Thanks.
