A Brown Breakfast

January 14, 2012

Good morning!!

It seems obvious that NYC has tons of amazing restaurants, but what I can’t believe is how many totally cool, hip, funky, modern places are on every. single. block! I want to try them all. I suppose even if you lived here you wouldn’t have the time, money or stomach space to do that! I bet some people have come close though. Going out to eat 3 meal a day would definitely be so much more tempting here.

This morning Matt (who stumbled home about 2am last night but woke up at 8:30 when I did!) and I met our dear friend Whitney (aka Whizzle) for breakfast at Brown Café on the lower east side.

We started with refreshing lemon water and strong coffees (Intelligentsia!)

I had one thing on the brain: the yogurt, fruit and granola bowl.

It appears to be all granola, but there was tons of delicious plain yogurt and fruit to be found underneath.

Whitney got these beautiful baked eggs!

We were on the same freshman hall at Davidson, and I’m sad we don’t get to see each other more often!

Back at the hotel, we’re about to head out for brunch with all the hungover frat boys!

That egg dish looks insanely good! I can’t believe I’ve never been to NYC. That’s my 2012 goal!

Have fun today! Can’t wait to see all the yummy eats.

8 Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn January 14, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Skillets make me Swoon. That is that.

9 katie perkins January 14, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Looks amazing, I adore NYC.
You should do another weekend trip to CHI! We can show you even more phenomenal restaurants and stuff you to the gills.

10 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio January 14, 2012 at 12:23 pm

It does look like a big bowl of just granola, but beautiful granola!! Isn’t it great seeing old friends?

11 Diana January 14, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Brunch in NYC (I used to live there!) is such a glorious experience – I wish the rest of the nation would get on board with how important brunch is! I’m creepily excited to check back into KERF to see where y’all end up going for brunch!

12 Erika - The Teenage Taste January 14, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Whoa, those baked eggs look fabulous! I bet they were amazing with that crusty bread. Mmmmm… 😀
Have a great day, Kath! 😀

13 Christine @ BookishlyB January 14, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I love that cast iron skillet the eggs are in! I need some of those.

15 Emily @ The Swallow Flies January 14, 2012 at 12:42 pm

Breakfast is by far my favorite meal of the day – and those eggs look ah-maze-ing!

16 Olivia January 14, 2012 at 1:07 pm

I would have gone with one of the baked eggs dishes – those look awesome! Though granola has its places and times, I would never order it out at a restaurant!!

17 Anna January 14, 2012 at 1:10 pm

That is definitely something my friends and I have to do now…breakfast (because we don’t stay out/party too late and wake up at the crack of dawn) and then get brunch when all the boys get up!
Have fun!

18 Rebecca @ Naturally Healthy and Gorgeous January 14, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Those baked eggs are so pretty looking!

19 Kelly @ Vegolosophy January 14, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Both those breakfast’s looking pretty amazing!!! Living in NYC makes it so tempting to go out ALL the time. My hubby and I have to limit ourselves to 2 times a week, but if we were not on a budget and I didn’t enjoy cooking as much as I do..I think we would eat out EVERY meal! So many fantastic places to eat!

20 Ash Bear January 14, 2012 at 1:32 pm

We’ve never been to Brown Cafe but the food looks perfect! We tend to eat breakfast in versus going out as it saves us quite a bit of money and calories in New York City!

21 Brittany January 14, 2012 at 1:37 pm

Have fun exploring NYC!!

22 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife January 14, 2012 at 1:49 pm

mmmmm sounds tasty!

I agree on that thought about NYC–so many delicious looking places!

23 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats January 14, 2012 at 2:20 pm

I think I would love living in NY if I had an insane amount of money. I’d just eat out every meal and have my own car driver. it would be lovely.

24 Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot January 14, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Oh I have been craving granola so bad lately! And that looks like really good granola!

25 Hotly Spiced January 14, 2012 at 2:53 pm

The baked egg dish looks incredible. I keep hearing how great the food is in New York. I really must get there soon.

26 Alex January 14, 2012 at 2:53 pm

You have to try out Whym on 9th at 58th street for lunch! The atmosphere and service are great and the sandwiches are amazing :-)

27 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga January 14, 2012 at 2:54 pm

So glad you got to meet up with your old friend, Whitney, and hang out. And yes, isn’t it amazing when you go to a big city like NYC or Chicago or even smaller cities with a fun food scene, that on every single block there’s amazing restaurants. In every little neighborhood, block, street, there are gems. EVerywhere! I have lived in entire states that had less diversity in restaurants than say one block in certain other cities in other states.

Glad you’re enjoying the weekend!

28 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen January 14, 2012 at 3:12 pm

those baked eggs look to die for! Especially with that bacon on top! :)

29 Michelle (Better with Berries) January 14, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Yum – that restaurant looks amazing! I’ve developed a recent urge to go to New York (never been) and this is definitely making me want to go even more.

30 Ada January 14, 2012 at 3:22 pm

So true about NYCers being tempted to eat out all the time. I was born, raised, and currently live here and still have not even dined at one fifth of all the restaurants! Haven’t even been to any of the ones you’ve visited thus far. Hope you enjoy the rest of your time here!

31 Kavi @ Lab to Fab! January 14, 2012 at 3:28 pm

Brunch is an institution here in NYC! Everything revolves around eating and drinking in these parts – hard not to with all these amazing options!

32 jana @ newly wife healthy life January 14, 2012 at 3:34 pm

What a fun breakfast! I love how beautiful both dishes look. The presentation of the baked eggs is awesome, I love when dishes are served in the same pans they were baked in, it looks so rustic!

33 Jack O'Brien January 14, 2012 at 3:54 pm

You are visiting on literally the coldest weekend we have had ALL winter. It was 45-50 the entire week!

34 Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles January 14, 2012 at 4:03 pm

That granola bowl looks GIGANTIC and you’re right – definitely looks like it’s ALL granola! haha

35 J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) January 14, 2012 at 5:02 pm

There are so many amazing places to try in NYC, I wish days were longer and stomachs were bigger! I have the toughest time deciding where to eat when we are there; everything sounds so good.

36 kathleen @ the daily crumb January 14, 2012 at 5:39 pm

nyc is a foodie’s dream! those baked eggs look scrumptious, along with your granola of course :)

37 Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco January 14, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Wow, those eggs really are GORGEOUS! I’m so glad you’re having fun. 😉

38 Angel7 January 14, 2012 at 6:33 pm

I would love to be able to have all the awesome restaurants that N.Y.C. does at my discretion–that would be ideal!!!

39 Amelia January 14, 2012 at 7:11 pm

I so agree with you – there’s never enough time, money, or stomach real estate to enjoy every amazing thing that NYC has to offer. I guess frequent trips are the solution!

40 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin January 14, 2012 at 8:51 pm

I think I would be in foodie heaven in NYC. I can’t wait to visit one day (hopefully soon)!

41 Maria January 14, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Sounds like a great trip! I love visiting NYC. The train up from Union Station is such a great ride. Definitely the way to travel to the Northeast!

I love how the baked eggs are served right in the pan! I’ve never seen that before!

45 Cait's Plate January 15, 2012 at 7:57 am
