Biking Helps With Digestion

October 10, 2008

Ugggggggggg. Even 10.6 miles of biking can’t undo the amount of fullness I am feeling. I went to tonight’s party with the best of intentions…until I saw the bakery cake!!

Karen invited us to a party she had for the couples who live in her condo building. We had a great time, but were also the youngest there by at least 20 years?! But sometimes adults can be the most entertaining :)

The husband and I have implemented Fuel Free Weekends. The past few weekends and counting we have started a rule that IF we can bike to a place, we are required to. There are two exceptions:

1) A hot date where I need to dress up

I totally did not want to bike to Karen’s, but it was 5.3 miles, about a 50 minute bike ride, and I knew with good weather I could not refuse. So we did. And I’m glad we did. But I wasn’t glad at about mile 4 on the way there when I started to break a sweat and my hair was flattened by my helmet!

On Karen’s stylish chaise post-bike ride –

Since I didn’t finish lunch until 2pm today, I skipped my snack and decided to just eat when I got there (around 6:30, so not that late). But after our bike ride, I was STARVING!!! I nibbled on about an ounce’s worth of almonds taken from this serving bowl –

Karen had our favorite wines to serve and I couldn’t choose between the Ferrai-Carrano Fume Blanc and Frei Brothers Chardonnay.

I decided on the buttery Frei Bros! Knowing I always eat more when I drink more, my plan was to have one glass. I ended up having about 1.5 – pretty good!!

Then a cheese platter came out…. my downfall #1

Cheese 1

Cheese 2

And the probability that I had more nears 100% I had about 2 more crackers with cheese. I LOVE CHEESE!

I also always enjoy looking at our wedding album book when I go to Karen’s :)

For dinner we had Karen’s famous French Beef, a casserole/lasagna with pasta, sour cream, cream cheese, ground beef, tomato sauce and cheese. Mmm! Plus a mish-mosh salad with tons of fruit, craisins, nuts (and raw onions 👿 ) and baguette with a little butter –

From above –

Seconds (which I totally didn’t need)

Then I had wine #2 (and I also had a few sips of the husband’s as he tasted different kinds). This was Mark West Pinor Noir, another favorite! (Plus another smoked gouda with cracker!)

After that I switched to diet tonic and lime. I could have easily kept sipping wine, but I knew it was time to switch over.

THEN came the CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the Blondies we made –

Uggggggggglajslajsdlajsdfj. I ate it all, plus Karen’s icing!!!

My stomach was hanging over my jeans the whole ride home, but I admit I do feel much better after some biking digestion!!

Not sure if tomorrow’s plan for fancy French toast is going to happen. We might need to save it for Sunday! I’m in the mood for water and fruit right now.

This party looks great…even if it was with “old” people 😉
And that cake looks soooo good! Is it carrot cake?

2 Alex October 10, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I must say, you have a great amount of willpower and you eat so well most of the time… which is why I find it so discouraging when you eat at an event like this with almost perfect moderation and yet you convey that you feel guilty/regret/overindulgent when you really did not eat that much. I hope that you do not take this is a criticism. I certainly don’t mean it that way, and so I hope that this comes out civilly (as I intend – I respect you immensely) – I am merely expressing my thoughts.

the cake looks awwwwsome! i’m sure the bike ride helped, even if it was a little! love the color of your shirt!

4 Serena October 10, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Agreed , Alex – it all looks great and worth it – especially considering you got in a lot of exercise today! Don’t feel guilty – you are exactly what I think about when I think of what it’s like to indulge … in moderation! Have a great weekend!

5 Cyclist Kate October 10, 2008 at 10:44 pm

I find that I sometimes feel most full when I bike–I think it makes my digestion kind of wonky (though I can feel the positive difference when I wake up the next morning).

Everything looks lovely! It sounds like you guys had fun…learning to exercise moderation is an ongoing lesson, huh? Hope you feel better/more digested when you wake up tomorrow!

6 Lisa October 10, 2008 at 10:55 pm

That cheese is the best-looking thing I’ve seen all day!

7 Sara October 10, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Wow, everything at the party looks fantastic! Sounds like a good time. Cute shirt too! :)

8 EllCee October 10, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Your stomach was hanging over your jeans?

Well hell I guess mine is every Friday and Saturday night then. Way to treat yourself without feeling guilt. Wait…

Sorry not to be snarky Kath but I’ve had some cocktails :)

9 Liz October 10, 2008 at 11:05 pm

You burn a gazillion and 10 calories a day! It’s ok! The treats look wonderful, good for you for enjoying life…I think splurges have an essential place in the whole philosophy of moderation 😉

10 Jim October 10, 2008 at 11:19 pm

OMG The cake! It looks amazing! It’s carrot, yes?

11 Saima October 10, 2008 at 11:23 pm

that cake looks divine…it looked so pretty!

12 Saima October 10, 2008 at 11:28 pm

back again–i agree with Alex….it wasn’t TOO bad an indulgence as i first started reading the post!!

13 nicole r. October 10, 2008 at 11:48 pm

a fun fact for you, kath, and all fellow winos:
i am a medical student, and in my biochemistry class this morning my professor spoke at length about the purported benefits of alcohol. apparently these peak at the 1.5 glass mark (where a glass=6oz), and actually don’t have any statistical significance until that point. so go ahead and feel good about rocking 9oz a day!! your body thanks you :)

14 Sherri Clute October 11, 2008 at 12:12 am

Hi Kath!

The French Beef looks quite yummy! Do you happen to know Karen’s recipe? I love the Fuel Free weekend idea – fun way to add extra workouts in as well which is always a nice bonus.

15 Maureen October 11, 2008 at 4:35 am

Ohmigosh, your wedding dress is sooo gorgeous… *swoons*.
How did the blondies go over?

16 sarah October 11, 2008 at 5:16 am

i totally know how you feel because like you i LUUUV good food but am not a fan of the ‘stuffed’ feeling :) i think that overall you did really well though with moderation while enjoying things that are really worth it — good wine, CHEESE (omg i am with you that cheese is pretty much the best thing ever), and dessert among friends. but i do understand feeling a mixed bag of satisfaction and regret! i bet you will wake up today feeling much better once most of it has digested!

17 zestycook October 11, 2008 at 5:58 am

THis food looks amazing!!!! I am not sure how I was not invited to the party :)… teasing. WOW – I fell asleep early last night so I am just reading your post now at 7:59am prior to breakfast … and this is making me sooo hungry.

Great work as always Kath

18 Jana October 11, 2008 at 6:20 am

Oh Lord, if there is a recipe for this cake, let it be mine! 😉

19 Trojan October 11, 2008 at 6:28 am

Carrot cake is my biggest weakness….what a fun night!

20 oatmeal October 11, 2008 at 6:38 am

Oh man cheese platters are one of my weaknesses as well–just CANNOT say no to cheese and crackers!

21 coco October 11, 2008 at 6:46 am

I think sometimes I just NEED get out of our daily diet, over eat a little. It’s good for our soul! ^_^ I’m sure you’ll adjust the next few days.

22 Kath October 11, 2008 at 7:13 am

Justy2003 ,
It was carrot cake and Jana there’s no recipe because it was from a local catering company :(

Alex ,
I appreciate your nice comment, but there was nothing moderate about the way I was feeling when I left that party. My stomach was STUFFED and I felt horrible. I slept horrible. I have a sugar hangover. I should have had half the piece of cake, skipped Karen’s icing, skipped the seconds on the food. While I agree that it seemed like a “normal” splurge event, the way my body was feeling was telling me 100% = you ate way too much and I am mad. So my thoughts were much more regret than guilt. Not about the calories (because I know I can easily bump back from that) but because I did not listen to my body and felt so sick.

EllCee ,
I guess I should have added that I knew it was temporary and would be back to normal in the morning. It was the comfort I was complaining about.

Sherri Clute,
I don’t know the French Beef recipe. It was not a healthy one at all though. I’d recommend the turkey-goat cheese-pasta dish we’ve made over it:

Maureen ,
Blondies were the runner up next to that cake. They also kind of stuck together in transport despite waxed paper between them so they are sticky little blondes!

23 Gliding Calm October 11, 2008 at 7:14 am

Ah Kath, you make me laugh. The onions! GRRR. Hilarrrrrious. And I adore cheese too. It’s a dangerous thing for me! Savory over sweet right here!! Aka cheese over chocolate/candy!

Though is that carrot cake? Because that looks amazing. One of my all time favs. After competitions my family always would buy me a carrot cake from Whole Foods to celebrate with. DELISH.

Happy Saturday!!! And I love your biking…in fact I’m jealous of your biking…though I live next to some busy busy streets so I’m not sure how much biking I would do even if I could.

Wow, can you say ramble?
TAKE CARE!!!!!!! :)

24 Kim October 11, 2008 at 7:15 am

i love your sweater! where is it from- if you don’t mind sharing?

25 Kath October 11, 2008 at 7:17 am

Kim ,
Thanks! It’s actually just a shirt. I got it at Loehmann’s, so I’m not sure if it’s find-able this year.

26 Biz319 October 11, 2008 at 7:40 am

That cake looks amazing, but for me, I would have gone back for seconds, thirds and fourths with the cheese platter!

27 Erin October 11, 2008 at 7:42 am

That top is adorable!

28 VeggieGirl October 11, 2008 at 7:50 am

CAKE!!! BLONDIES!!! Scrumptiousness.

Hope you’re feeling much better this morning, Kath!!

29 Tina October 11, 2008 at 7:53 am

I would KILL for a piece of that cake!

30 Alex October 11, 2008 at 8:29 am

I am glad that you explained your feelings – and I completely understand. I think that makes much more sense; I often have the same regrets when I don’t do a great job listening to my hunger/fullness cues. I would like to reiterate, though, that I think you do a fantastic job of listening to your body 99% of the time, so I guess I just wish you (or anyone in such a situation) wouldn’t be so hard on yourself!

31 Kath October 11, 2008 at 8:35 am

I don’t think I was being as hard on myself in reality as it appeared in the post. I think I just used the blog as a diary to get my feelings out last night! I just felt so sick. But thanks for your comments :)

32 Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) October 11, 2008 at 8:57 am

Love your wedding photos!

33 Holly October 11, 2008 at 9:03 am

New reader here – I love your blog! Your pictures make me v. hungry.

That cake looks TO DIE FOR. Yum! I think it’s great that you are trying not to use fuel on the weekends. I wish I could do it more where I live, but they are about 10 years behind in things so we don’t have a lot of bike paths. And I know I will get hit if I bike on a busy street. :-)

34 Tracy October 11, 2008 at 9:14 am

What a cool party! I love how you guys can bike everywhere- i live in california, not that great for biking unless you want to get runover by gas guzzlin’ suvs….carrot cake? is that your favorite kind of cake? i love carrot cake clif bars- a healthier alternative!

35 Lauren October 11, 2008 at 9:47 am

okay you over-ate…which u RARELY do so it’s okay! it was a weekend and you deserve it, you do work out like everyday! ya i know it’s about the feeling of eating too much before im sure part of it is that healthy/diet mentality butim sure u will make up for it the rest of the weekend by getting bck to your healthy eating. at least you biked almost 11 miles which most people dont even do on a normal day haha all the food looks AMAZING and props to you for biking even to you were wanting to look nice (and still did!)

36 Bev October 11, 2008 at 10:00 am

Can you share your blondie recipe ?

37 Chelsie October 11, 2008 at 10:08 am

I get “food hangovers” too, exactly how you described! When I eat until I’m way too full like that, I wake up an hour or so after falling asleep and I’m burning hot. I wonder why?

And keep up the good job on the blog; you’re such an inspiration, and fun to read!

38 Beth October 11, 2008 at 11:06 am

YUMMY!!!! I love food parties. You did not overeat at all! I can tell you I probably would have eaten three times that much had I been there! (If food is out I will nibble even if not hungry.) Plus I adore wine so I’m sure I would have wanted to taste every kind. Looks like so much fun!

39 Kim October 11, 2008 at 11:51 am

I forgot to check in with you and THANK YOU! a few weeks ago I was stuck and you gave me some advice…..I took the advice…applied it and now I am below my goal….Thank you. All with three kids under 5 a great husband and a new found love for running, spinning and weight lifting and your blog too:)

40 MLT October 11, 2008 at 12:41 pm

This has nothing to do with your post, but I’ve been noticing over the last few weeks that your skin looks AMAZing. Not that you ever had anything less than pretty skin, but lately you are (to use a way overused word) GLOWING. Esp. in that color shirt, your skin just pops. Whatever you’re doing, exercising, eating, etc. it seems to be working! Cheers!

41 bobbi October 11, 2008 at 1:55 pm

you deserve it all KATH!

42 Kath October 11, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Bev ,
I posted the Blondie recipe link on Thursday – dinner post, I believe.

Kim ,
AWESOME update!!!

Thanks 😳 I credit it 100% to Bare Minerals!! That make up has changed my life! But hopefully eating healthy and exercise help too :)

43 Kristie #2 October 11, 2008 at 6:09 pm

I love the pic of you two-fisting the white wine- I knew I liked you! :)

44 Bev October 11, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I’m still not finding the Blondie recipe . Just Kelsey recipe…..?

45 Kath October 11, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Right under the Chobanis in this post:

“Lower Fat Blondies”

46 Andrea (Off Her Cork) October 12, 2008 at 7:59 am

It’s the cheese plate that would have been my downfall as I’m not much of a sweets person. I love cheese and wine! Looks like you guys had a blast. 😀

47 Cat October 13, 2008 at 11:34 am

Kath, I totally know what you mean by the “food hangover” I hate those – not because I think one day of overeating will do me in, but it spoils my hearty breakfast appetite!! :) Mmmm looove cheese platters! I applaud your Fuel Free Weekends as well. I live in NYC so it’s pretty rare that I drive anywhere, but when I do travel I try to stick to subways & walking instead of taxis. Cheers!
