-> Kath your kitchen is beautiful! So open and fresh! I bet it gets great light in there when the sun’s out :) Thanks for the mango tip! I find with a really ripe one if you cut through the skin along the pit so you have four quarters (all still intact), you can actually just peel the mango-skin quarters right off :)! Super Safe! And great because you don’t have to dirty up the peeler! Enjoy your day!

Re: reusable bags

I know you use reusable bags for grocery shopping…I’ve recently starting doing that too. I’m curious about alternatives to the plastic bags for produce? I always feel like I need to put my produce in something but I’m not sure what alternatives are available? Thanks
I’ve said this before but I think it deserves to be said again – your blog is awesome!!

Hey Julie, I usually don’t use bags for produce at all but have been contemplating buying some cotton mesh produce bags I saw at reusablebags.com

I have two reusuble bags and usually put all produce without plastic bags in one of them, the rest of the groceries go into the other bag.

I have the same problem with the produce bags – I ate using them if my goal is to not use plastic bags, but the carts and even more so, the conveyor belts, are SO dirty. Usually if I eat the skin I use a bag and if I don’t (bananas) I don’t. What I should probably just do is put it all in my bag, but that doesn’t help the conveyor belt problem! I like Yaz’s suggestion, but I think those little bags would be kind of annoying to carry around and use since I always have like 20 different kinds of produce. That’s a lot of bags. Hmmm…

I’ve stopped using produce bags altogether (except when I’m buying tons of apples or something that would be a disaster if let roam free!). I wash everything thoroughly anyway, and taking into account all the hands that produce passes through before you buy it, I can’t imagine that a dirty conveyor belt would add very much grime that can’t be easily rinsed off. I find that this (in addition to always bringing my canvas bags with me to the store) gets rid of lots of “plastic guilt” that I have and is a really easy thing to do. Just try not using produce bags for a few shops and see how you like it!

my dad always says that the best part of the mango is the part closest to the center, so you are smart to just gnaw it off!!!!

Thanks for your comments. Yaz – I think I might try the bags you suggested. I tend to only buy a few different items at a time so I think those would work well for me. I started using reusable shopping bags so I really want to figure out a way to quit using plastic produce bags. Thanks again :)

Love the video! I’ve always wondered how to cut a mango to retain all the flesh … and I never had the idea of sucking on the pit afterwards. LOL!

I found out another exotic fruit is also healthy and tastes great if you eat when its unriped – its coconuts who would have thought! When unriped they are fat free despite popular belief of coconuts being high in cholesterol. Water coming from the fruit is even better for you, please check out what i found! Thanks

Interesting! I live in Indonesia where mangoes grow in abundance and with a lot of varieties. This is exactly how we prepare mangoes..right down to the gnawing part! It’s mango season here, and I’ve been consuming them like crazy.. ignoring the misleading accusation of mangoes being sugar n carb heavy fruit, thus should be consumed only infrequently and in small portions..fruits are not cookies!
