3 Cheers For Coffee

September 3, 2011

Figured I’d say hello while I’m waiting to digest and then head over to Seamane’s for race carpool.

I was very lucky to awaken in a dream this morning, which meant I already felt awake and wasn’t groggy. I’m kind of excited actually!

Heard the coffee pot working.

Then I SMELLED it!! Just like in the commercials.

3 Cheers for Pre-Race Coffee

1) Helps with the sleep deprivation

2) Helps with the bowels (it’s true)

3) Works as an ergogenic aid = faster running

Especially if you’re not used to it and had 1.5 cups like I just did – wheeeeeeeeee!

Delicious, delicious Dakota bun half with smashed banana and sunflower buttah!!

And off I go!

Coffee is excellent pre-run fuel for me! Good luck! Random observation: I always spread the nut butter on first!

11 KathEats September 3, 2011 at 9:59 am

I think you can taste it more on top!

12 Katie @ Real Food Katie's Way September 3, 2011 at 6:43 am

Hope you are having a blast! I had to miss the race this morning for the first time since 2005. Would have been my 7th year in a row! Come back and tell us what you think. It’s one of my favorite days of the year.

16 Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews September 3, 2011 at 6:59 am

haha I’m laughing about your “weee” after the coffee. I can get like that too. Good luck today! Also, are you not going to Musselman’s now?

17 KathEats September 3, 2011 at 10:00 am

Unfortunately, no :( Buying a house put a kink in the trip

18 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 3, 2011 at 7:01 am

That mug reminds me of Halloween! Can’t believe it’s less than 2 months away now.

Good luck today! 😀

19 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List September 3, 2011 at 7:16 am

23 Erika @ The Teenage Taste September 3, 2011 at 7:41 am

I always have to have coffee before races! I’ve noticed that I am much more sluggish otherwise!
Good luck, Kath! 😀

24 Cat September 3, 2011 at 7:43 am

Dakota, is that a bagel. Your breakfast looks really tasty. I wish I was a coffee drinker. I only like it if it has a lot of chocolate – think dessert. Good luck on your race.

25 KathEats September 3, 2011 at 10:01 am

No, it’s a hamburger bun from our bakery

26 Hillary September 3, 2011 at 7:48 am

You just nailed the three reasons why I drink coffee! Love it.

Good luck this morning! Have a great time.

27 Baking N Books September 3, 2011 at 7:52 am

Coffee is a good stimulant but I found it would speed up my heart rate too much and be uncomfortable if I was going to exert myself.

I thought your breakfast was a baked potato – the banana looks like the white stuff. But couldn’t figure out why there seeds stuck to the skin!

28 Liz September 3, 2011 at 9:20 am

Ha! At first glance I thought it was a baked potato, too! :)

29 Samantha September 4, 2011 at 8:53 am

I ALSO thought it was baked potato!! I was a bit horrified!

30 Sally Anne @ PaleoRunnerGirl September 3, 2011 at 8:39 am

Coffee + Running are the ingredients for a perfect race! I hope you have a lovely time! I love races in September/October!

31 Margo @ Peanut Butter Trees September 3, 2011 at 8:52 am

Good luck today running!

32 Angel7 September 3, 2011 at 8:53 am

Coffee does not get me going like it does most people. However, I love the taste of it with lots ‘o milk!

Off to the races…

33 Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well. September 3, 2011 at 8:57 am

I’d be saying “wheeeeeeeee” too if I had that much coffee! I never drink the stuff, so I would be a little loopy too :)

I hope it helps you in the race! Good luck!

34 Kristen Waby September 3, 2011 at 8:59 am

Good luck! I was just thinking myself how I love my coffee!

35 Alaina September 3, 2011 at 9:17 am

39 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio September 3, 2011 at 9:43 am

I hope you had a great run this morning!!

I just love coffee, for so many reasons :) I appreciate reading an RD’s take on coffee. Happy Saturday!

40 Danielle @weightsandmeasures September 3, 2011 at 9:51 am

I tried to eat something new before my long run this morning and spent half of my run walking with stomach cramps. No fun, but I learned not to eat that again before running. I hope you race goes well!

41 Cait's Plate September 3, 2011 at 10:00 am

Good luck! Have so much fun :)

42 Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee September 3, 2011 at 10:04 am

Good luck with your race!!! I don’t like drinking coffee before a race because it gives me acid and de-hydrates me but hey, some people really swear by running on coffee! I much prefer coffee flavor ice cream. :)

43 Jil @ Big City, Lil' Kitchen September 3, 2011 at 10:07 am

Have a greaaaaaat coffee-fueled race – wheeee!

44 Molly @ RDexposed September 3, 2011 at 10:15 am

Coffee before a race is mandatory! …at least for me :)

45 Leanna @ Raptortoe September 3, 2011 at 10:39 am

Everywhere I’ve read waking up during REM sleep makes you sleepier! You’re lucky I always feel like death if I wake up during a dream. Have fun!

46 Hayley @ Oat Couture September 3, 2011 at 10:53 am

Good luck for the race! :)

47 J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) September 3, 2011 at 10:58 am

wahoo have fun!

52 kathleen (the daily crumb) September 3, 2011 at 11:48 am

good luck, kath!! you’re right, there is no substitute for pre race coffee. there is definitely nothing like the moment, though, when you realize at the starting line you drank your pre-race coffee but it has not, ahem, work on your bowels yet. (excuse the TMI!) happy saturday :)

53 ashley @ cooking for john September 3, 2011 at 12:34 pm

you breakfast looks like half of a baked potato! 😉

54 Allison September 4, 2011 at 8:35 am

I’ve got 2 very ripe bananas that are the perfect stage for mashing on some toast- great idea!

55 Corinne September 5, 2011 at 8:13 am
