14 Things For 2014

January 1, 2014

The best you can hope for in life is that your next year is better than your last.

Are you guys making resolutions for 2014? I generally have the same ones every year:

Those are pretty all-encompassing of the usuals: eat well, exercise often, make time for myself, rest, love on my family and friends, stay organized, stress less, act generously and kindly toward others. These are the resolutions I wake up with every morning, so New Years just feels like a time to be extra focused on my everyday goals. I do love the refreshing feeling of resolutions though!

Here are 14 things I am looking forward to this year:

1. Matt’s 31st birthday – I have a few great presents ready to go!

2. A trip to Key West with Karen and Andrew! I can’t wait for warm tropical weather

3. Mazen’s first tumbling class. He sure loves to jump and flip so I can’t wait to see how he likes it!

4. Spring soccer season. I really loved playing this fall and can’t wait for games to start up again.

5. Great Harvest Convention. It’s in a warm destination this year!

6. Spring weather when our backyard becomes really fun again

7. Our 7th wedding anniversary!

8. A summer beach trip. Maybe Mazen will love the ocean this year?

9. The Third Annual Low Country Boil!

10. A weekend girls’ trip somewhere fun with my mom friends. TBD.

11. Mazen’s 2nd birthday. What will he be able to do by then!?

12. Mazen’s first day of preschool! Just 2 mornings a week, but a big step in growing up

13. A romantic fall getaway to Sonoma – without our little guy. It’s been a long time since we’ve set foot in wine country and a long time since we’ve been anywhere as a couple <3

14. Turning 32. Where has the time gone.

Those are great resolutions!! I’m trying to be smarter with my time this year. As in, less internet time and more volunteering time! More time spent nurturing myself and less time worrying.

Here’s to a wonderful year in 2014!! Looks like you have a LOT of exciting things to look forward to! 😀

Lots of fun ahead!!! When is it Matt’s birthday? My little nephew is 2 in March…such a fun age!!! He latest thing is playing hide and seek! The only problem is he tends not to tell anyone until he’s gone missing! Found him in the downstairs bathroom yesterday with the door closed!

Great list! Its so nice to remember how important it is to be nice! I feel like so many people forget what they learned in kindergarten but it really makes the world a better place.
I love looking forward to all the things we have planned in the near future. Helps get you excited for whats to come!
Happy New Year!

Looks like a big year coming up! I can’t believe Mazen will be going to preschool!

10 Cindy January 1, 2014 at 10:04 am

Love this post– always look to you and your positive nature. Quick question, I am obsessed with over nite oats….. Love so much. I just tried the Oat Bran hot cereal after my morning run and like this. I was wondering if you had any advice with this product for a “overnite version”. Thanks for the advice and warmest wishes to you and your beautiful family for a happy and healthy 2014.

11 KathEats January 1, 2014 at 3:12 pm

I think you can do it just like overnight oats. Just put the right ratios of water milk and Oat bran. I’ve never done it though so I’m not sure if all the liquid Would absorb.

Happy New Year, Kath! All the best for 2014!

Also, you guys are just too, TOO cute in your family photo :). Picture perfect!

That is a ton of exciting stuff! I agree that resolutions can be for any time of the year, not just the New Year, but this is a great time to hone in on them.
I hope you have a blessed new year, Kath!

15 Elisabeth January 1, 2014 at 12:37 pm

Sounds like you have a fun year planned! I usually plan to make resolutions & then never do, so this year I’m going to follow through with some ‘real’ resolutions. My 2014 resolutions include losing the last 40-50 pounds, getting a new position as a medical lab scientist in my new state of North Carolina (just moved from Ohio a little over two weeks ago), taking a ‘real’ vacation somewhere and getting my budget in better order. 😉

16 Katie @ Talk Less, Say More January 1, 2014 at 12:52 pm

Definitely some wonderful things to look forward to this year. Happy New Year to you and your family, Kath!

17 coco January 1, 2014 at 12:52 pm

happy new year! :)

18 @simple green moms January 1, 2014 at 1:24 pm

So jealous of all your fun trips planned! We opted out of a family trip to Hawaii cause 8 hours on a plane with a 1 1/2yr old would just be awful

19 Kaila @healthyhelperblog! January 1, 2014 at 1:56 pm

So much excitement coming in 2014 for your family!!! Lots to look forward to this year!

20 Emily @ Life on Food January 1, 2014 at 2:31 pm

Looks like 2014 will be full of fun and new adventures. Enjoy every second!

21 Ashley L. January 1, 2014 at 2:36 pm

Have a great trip to key west! We go every year and love it. Try to get to Sarabeth’s for breakfast.

22 Amanda January 1, 2014 at 3:08 pm

Happy New Year! I like the idea of resolving to focus on the goals already in your life too (and maybe sprinkle in another one or two)!

23 Julie January 1, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I hope they bring more Great Harvests here!

24 Lisa C. January 1, 2014 at 3:44 pm

Great, basic resolutions!

You’ve got some amazing trips planned!

25 Natalie January 1, 2014 at 4:04 pm

Happy, Healthy New Year! Sounds like you have a wonderful 2014 to look forward to! I was just in Key West over Christmas so let me know if you want any restaurant recommendations! I ate at some wonderful places you would enjoy!

26 KathEats January 1, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Id love some!

27 Natalie January 1, 2014 at 8:53 pm

For breakfast Blue Heaven is a must! Such a fun atmosphere (live music at breakfast, outdoor bar and patio, ping pong, hens and their little chicks at your feat) and the most amazing homemade banana bread that you can take home too! Also the Banana Cafe was great too.

For dinner, Louie’s Backyard is probably the “nicest” restaurant you will find in Key West. A tad pricey, but the food was a incredible and the setting was beautiful and romantic. Mangoes is a great spot on Duval Street, delicious seafood and more reasonable. For Italian (especially pasta!), Mangia Mangia was absolutely delicious.

Have fun! Hope you enjoy Key West and post about where ever you decide to eat!

28 KathEats January 2, 2014 at 6:41 am

Thank you I will!

29 Julie Rosene January 1, 2014 at 4:42 pm

Happy New Year Kath!!

30 Amelia @i_heart_kale January 1, 2014 at 5:46 pm

Happy New Year Kath (plus M & M)!!! What an exciting list and a great idea as compared to ‘resolutions’. Kevin and I made a list of goals or things we want to accomplish/ continue to work on, but we never make resolutions. Today is just another day just like tomorrow will be.
Not sure how far you want to venture with your mom friends, but you can always rent a beach house and visit Charleston! Hooray for Matt’s birthday ( are you making a cake?) and celebrating another year of marriage. We celebrate 7 years in October. Where is life going?

31 Mom January 1, 2014 at 8:01 pm

37 Molly January 2, 2014 at 10:55 am

Yay! I’m celebrating 32 this year too. I think adult birthdays are going to be so much more fun with the energy and enthusiasm of our little ones. Happy 2014!

38 Kelly January 2, 2014 at 11:24 am

I love Key West!!! My boyfriend’s parents own a wine and cigar bar on Duvall street – it’s called Cork and Stogie – you should check it out while you’re there!! It’s near the Southernmost Point and the Butterfly conservatory (both must-sees as well). Enjoy!

39 KathEats January 2, 2014 at 11:56 am

We will!

40 Kavi January 2, 2014 at 2:41 pm

47 Candice January 8, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Hi – my sis lives behind the square in Sonoma and is a foodie, so if you need any tips, let me know. We typically stay away from the more touristy restaurants and wineries. One of my fav restaurants there is called La Salette and the dessert I have thought about for the last year is called “you’re my pudding. It will be my first stop when I visit in March :)
We also LOVE the food/wine pairing at St. Francis. We go at least twice a year to that (and I’m in Southern CA!)

48 KathEats January 8, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Thanks for the recs!

I hope M like the beach. We just took our girl to the beach for the first time over Christmas and she took to it very well (minus trying to eat the sand on her hands haha)
