100% Wholesome

February 11, 2009

Can’t talk – gotta study!! Test #1 went well. #2 is in just a few more hours (with a class inbetween).

I had an amazing EarthFare salad for lunch. Would you believe that I’m not even full after all of this? But perfectly satisfied, which is what matters.

A little of everything = a lot of variety. The good thing about EarthFare is you know everything in the store is 100% wholesome.

  • Spinach + Romaine
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Baby Corn
  • Bell Peppers
  • Sprouts
  • Sweet potato salad
  • Herbed Tofu (~5 cubes)
  • Hot Wing Tofu (2 cubes)
  • The. Best. Salmon.
  • Potato wedge
  • Mandarin Orange
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries
  • Pineapple
  • Kalamata Olives (~5)
  • Falafel Ball (that I didn’t eat because it was freezer burned – I knew they came frozen and could tell today :( )
  • Kidney Beans
  • 3-4 Fava Beans
  • Grapeleaf
  • Soy nuts (~1/2 tbsp)
  • 2 croutons
  • 2 pita chips (ate them in line!)
  • Sesame Dressing, on the side, which I didn’t touch.

(please note, my use of “you” does not mean i am targeting kath. it is generic you.)

how do you deal with the days when you think that you’ll never get your former self back? you know, the weight and look when you were happy with yourself and proud of your hard work?

i’ve been dealing with my stress, depression, and inability to deal with a big pile of life for about 6 months now with binge eating. i used to be anorexic, which is where the binging started. i got better. i became an athlete. i was happy, strong, ripped (tee-hee)! but i binged it all away. i feel like a failure, and the disciple i had will not come back.

frankly, i don’t want to eat that way the majority of the time. the chicken and steamed veggies. the restriction. how did i do it? my vice is sugar. i loooove cookies and ice cream. but now i can’t just enjoy. i binge. i don’t know when i’m hungry or full. i’m finally going to therapy today. i just can’t see ahead to the future to when i’ll have back the me i like, physically and mentally.

i’m afraid i’ll be stuck in this mindset or the anorexic mindset forever. i love healthy food, i love working out. but i loooove me some crap too. i wish i could be the paragon of clean eating. (tosca reno anyone? any opinions on her?)

yikes. i know this is heavy, but it seems like this is a place where people have been through this before. the most discouraging thing is i chose to do this. everytime i crammed something in my mouth it was a choice. why did i not love myself enough to just stop? why didn’t i value my hard work enough? i look at pictures from summer and know that the body i had was real, healthy, achievable, but i feel like i’ll never get there again. and if i do, i might not be able to recognize it and never, ever be satisfied.

god, i hope this doesn’t piss anyone off. i just don’t have people i feel comfortable telling this to so anonymous posting is pretty safe.

Hi Jen,
My advice to you is just to remember how you FELT before…it’s not about numbers, etc. Just remember how wonderful you felt and know that if you work hard now, you can FEEL that way again. Who doesn’t want to feel their best? Good for you for taking the step to go to therapy, it sounds like that’s a big step in the right direction. Good luck to you—you can do this!!!! :)

Jen,
Well you are doing the right thing with the therapy. Maybe your therapist will get you in touch with a dietician. And remember that fruit is a good source of sweetness. I seem to have a bit of a sweet tooth. I get frustrated because I eat well all day and then splurge on something at night. My mom keeps small sweets like hershey kisses in the house ad has two or three after a meal to hit that sweet spot. Good luck with the therapy and let us now how it goes!

Jenn-
I can relate to a lot of what you said and good job taking the step to go to therapy. Hopefully you can deal with some of the cognitive distortions and “all or nothing” thinking…it’s not all black and white, I know, easier said than done, right?? Remember, everything does come in a balance eventualy, especially when we come to that place when we are just happy with ourselves. We can’t always compare ourselves to others. We have our own strengths, its finding those and taking joy in them..what are you using the food to fulfill that is empty in your life? What are you using it to control? Life doesn’t ahve to just be steamed veggies and chicken, I mean dark chocolate has plenty of anti oxidants too :)

Kath-hope it went well today, i’m sure your house is in tarheel carolina blue for basketball tonight *wink*

jen ,
Feel free to vent to us whenever you want – we’re here to listen. The others gave good advice, and I agree that therapy is probably where you’ll make the most progress. Talk to your therapist about the Intuitive Eating book. I finished it last week (I know, I owe you guys a review) and I think the concept is fascinating. Deprivation only leads to overeating. There are no good and bad foods – just balance. Best of luck.

Kori ,
Sorry, I have no idea. Cinnamon maybe?

Kate ,
I saw that this morning – cute!

Hi Kath! I’ve been wondering what happens to the other half of fruit that you don’t eat. I was thinking about trying some of your breakfast ideas, but figuring out what to do with the leftover half banana is driving me mad. Should I just plastic wrap it and eat it the following day? It’s the same thing with apples. Hmm… oranges I can deal with, but the thought of fruit browning for a few hours kinda makes me feel weird.

Reese ,
Often I am splitting it with the husband. But for bananas, I just throw the other half, in the peel, unwrapped in the fridge and it’s fine the next morning.
